India was partitioned, and an East and West Pakistan were created from Muslim majority areas.Independence Day (Urdu:یومِ آزادی, romanized: Yaum-i Āzādī), observed annually on 14 August, is a national holiday in Pakistan. It commemorates the day when Pakistan achieved independence and was declared a sovereign state following the termination of the British Raj in August 1947.On August 14, 1947, Viceroy Lord Mountbatten delivered a speech to the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan. He was to transfer power to India and Pakistan at midnight on August 15. However, it was not possible for Mountbatten to be in both New Delhi and Karachi at the same timeRahmat Ali is credited by Pakistanis for having coined the term "Pakistan" and envisioning a separate state for Muslims. Beyond that, his ideas are not explored in any detail.A designer named Amiruddin Kidwai studied the League's flag, as he tried to design a flag for a new, independent nation. Finally he arrived at a design, and he presented it to the men who would run the new Pakistan government. The Pakistan government adopted his design on August 11, 1947.
