Also, wouldnt it just collapse the tunnel? Even if you had plenty of hard cover, you'd just make it harder for yourself. Just crawl in there with some pliers.

Given how much space is in that barrel, if they were full of tnt, I suspect a single barrel would delete an entire section of the hallway, and given the number of barrels around, the chain reaction of every barrel would remove the bunker from existance.

The manufacturing process is obscenely dangerous (particularly in early days) and it can destabilize over the course of decades in storage, but as a general rule you do need more than just impact or heat to detonate it. You need both simultaneously, which is why it was used for so long.

Joe was a victim of his own poor understanding of TNT and chat, equally ignorant, backing him up. TNT is not nearly as volatile as he thinks it is and cannot, generally, be detonated by shooting it. This is a common mistake video games and movies make, but is not one based in reality.
