  • Dealing with massive airway contamination.
James DuCanto, M.D. created the SALAD simulation to help healthcare workers everywhere be better prepared to deal with vomit & blood in the airway.
Expedient visualization of the airway with large bore suctioning is the key to success so an endotracheal tube can be rapidly inserted.
A major problem with routine DL & VL is that the light/camera is located at the end of the blade making them prone to light blackout. The user has to be careful inserting the laryngoscope superiorly whilst advancing the suction to avoid blackout. This method doesn’t help with massive airway soiling however.
In the video below, #EMS colleagues demonstrate visualization of the airway THROUGH secretions with no suctioning using the Vie Scope®️. We would always advocate suctioning alongside the Vie Scope®️ to facilitate view. The enclosed barrel of the scope avoids the suction getting in your way so you can see.
The beveled open end of the scope can also be used to SEAL OFF the glottis from the pharynx to avoid further contamination by advancing the Vie Scope®️ onto the vocal cords.
The Vie Scope®️ & pediatric bébé Vie Scope™ are the only single use laryngoscopes with proximal to distal illumination which avoids light blackout. The polycarbonate construction also helps ‘bead’ the secretions so fluid doesn’t stick to the plastic easily.
The SALAD situation is a common occurrence so arm yourself with one of the best airway devices to deal with it.
