ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT is another fantastic Cyndi Lauper song that I think you would love deep diving into. And there are plenty of live videos of her performing it, where as other songs of hers you may wish to stick to the music videos. Her voice is TRULY special and very charismatic!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Yes!!! Excellent points… That high pitched fun stuff was just part of her shtick from growing up in Brooklyn/Queens. (I wasn’t a big fan of that choice, but I still recognized her talent)… Fortunately she has so much more than that… And not just the perfect pitch and her “powerful and distinctive four-octave singing range”. That woman has crazy control of her voice… She can harmonize with almost any voice. Her cover of Unchained Melody is insanely awesome… Her sheer talent is incredible… She wrote/composed the music for Kinky Boots (Broadway Musical), and she has been a trail blazer in a lot of areas since she began. Lauper is under appreciated by so many people that just don’t know what they are missing.

Met Cindy in 1983 when she was really blowing up. Between her music and association with the wrestling community she was becoming quite a big star. She invited me and my partner to a wedding reception of her friend that was happening a few houses down on Venice Blvd. I was having a garage sale and playing my guitar to attract cool folks to the offerings. She was the nicest human you'd ever want to meet. Took us around the party and even gave the love of my life a small gift. Yes! "Money Changes Everything" is a criminally under-appreciated song - it was a cover - but it's a fantastic song and Cyndi holds a note at the end for half of forever, and you get some real appreciation for the power of her voice. The studio recording also features Rob Hyman (from the band The Hooters) playing the melodica solo. His band is named after the melodica, when someone told him to "play that hooter". Hyman was a co-writer on a couple of songs on the album, and played keyboards on several songs. Session drummer Anton Fig also played drums on a couple of tracks, before getting the gig playing drums in David Letterman's band for 30 years.

When I was a teenager, my friends and I (through several different circles!) had the beautiful benefit of several different households with similar parental attitudes as you express here. Cyndi’s 1983 debut album “She’s So Unusual” was on the Billboard Top 200 charts for 77 weeks and peaked at number 4. Six songs reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. Four of those were in the top five, making her the first female artist to have multiple top five singles from a debut album. The songs were “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”, “Time After Time”, “She Bop”, and “All Through The Night”. It went six times platinum in the USA. The next woman to have multiple top five hits from a debut album was Witney Houston in 1985, with three consecutive number one singles. For comparison, Madonna’s self-titled debut album was released the same year as Cyndi’s. It reached number 8 on the Billboard Top 200 and stayed in the charts for 168 weeks. The album “Madonna” had three top 20 hits, only one in the top five (“Borderline”). It was certified five times platinum in the USA.
I've always been fascinated by her vocalization in "She Bop," especially the descending sequence to the word "chaperone." It seems to me she raised and lowered all the harmonics, like what one might get by slowing down a tape, but I'm sure she did it with skill rather than technology.
Wonderful analysis. Cyndi is a fabulous entertainer. Her facial contortions and vocal stylings are a trademark that made her stand out. The video was great fun and even had a Conehead dancing in her room at the end. The black and white movie clip was from the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
I was lucky enough to see Cindy live on her True colours tour here in Melbourne Australia, she came on stage and apologised for being sick and the large amount of snot coming out of her nose ,😅😂😅😂 she absolutely sang her heart out and sounded amazing , full respect was gained from me that night 😊 and I am an old school headbanger 🤘
Long time subscriber here; I never fail to get a typical days full of smiles in the 25 or so minutes of your YT presentations! Thank you so much for your openness, genuineness, emotional IQ, and pure joy of music. Music is an essential in my life, like water and food, and though I was given the soul of a nightingale I was also given the voice of a crow when singing. I appreciate music everyday.
A great analysis of this great artist, thank you so much for getting around to her. To continue with Cyndi's stuff I recommend, "True Colours" which shows a very different side of her vocals.
This video was actually a massive thing for the WWF. Her father was played by Captain Lou Albano who worked in the WWF at the time. This then led to her appearing on WWF television which brought a lot of ratings and eventually led to the first ever Wrestlemania. It's genuinely such a keystone moment in the industry its tough to know what would have happened in wrestling as a whole without it
Although it’s ultimately meaningless and pretty stupid, the fact that Cyndi Lauper of ALL the non-wrestling people with some (often extremely tangential) involvement with the WWF/WWE wasn’t the very FIRST non-wrestler inducted, but still isn’t in the WWF Hall of Fame is pretty disgusting honestly. Now McMahon is gone hopefully she’ll be in (if she wants to!). There does seem to be something stirring in the zeitgeist where Cyndi’s absolutely pivotal role is being discussed here and there by wrestling fans - all ends with with the same question: why hasn’t SHE, of all people, gotten the recognition she deserves yet. Trump is in but Cyndi Lauper isn’t? Unbelievable.
I've seen this video dozens of times since it came out and never noticed that there was a conehead in the back of the room. And there was also a guy that looked a bit like Dieter Meier from Yello.
I love this, especially since I finally got to see Cyndi live a couple weeks ago. I was born in 1970 and grew up with her music. So awesome thanks for covering her!
I was WAY into classic rock when this came out, and the occasional new wave song, so my head wanted to hate this song, but it just was so great, catchy and well done, I loved it.
Same here. Less than 2% of my collection is pop music, and even as a young adult in the 1980s I loathed that synth-heavy style. The frequent 80s nostalgia revivals pass me by. This song, however, is just irresistible and Lauper's vocal prowess is top-shelf. I enjoyed her albums as well, plus her later foray into the blues. As a person she's so relatable and I kinda wish I could hang out with her in real life. Guess that qualifies me as a fan, albeit in a guilty-pleasure way.
Elizabeth, please, if you want to see the power she is capable of, watch the live version of “Money Changes Everything”, you you will know why SHE is my favorite female vocalist of all time. Thank you for all you do!
❤ I Love all Her Ballads. True Colors, is One of my Favorites. Phil Collins does A great rendition, I have to Say I like His Version better Because of the percussion. Thank You again Elizabeth For the shirt I Love 😍 it ❤
11 years ago Cyndi toured with Cher. I went to that concert to see Cher (a lifetime love), but Cyndi absolutely blew my socks off with her voice, energy level and humour. She was in her 60's at the time, and performed like someone half her age. I gained so much respect for her. I highly recommend seeing her live, if you get the chance.
Growing up as a young boy in the 80s this was one of my favourite records to listen to. To this day I still listen to the same copy handed down to me from my dad.
I see we already have requests for "Time After Time" and "True Colors" covered. There might even be some mentions of "Goonies Are Good Enough" or "She Bop" if I scrolled down enough. Or if there aren't, there undoubtedly soon will be. All good songs. But my sleeper pick is "All Through the Night"
I love Cyndi Lauper so much! She's the reason I started listening to rock n roll. When her song Time After Time first came out, I asked my brother What kind of music is this?!? He said rock n roll (because the terms pop, soft pop, and soft rock hadn't been invented yet). I said If this counts as rock, I'll give it at chance, and I started listening to a rock station just to hear her song again (and heard so many others along the way). :) Thank you for your analysis of Cyndi's voice! I loved hearing it. =) Jewel starting her singing career as a kid yodeling, and you can definitely hear it in her voice when she sings many of her songs. If you've never listened to her, I'd recommend starting with Who Will Save Your Soul; play her video with the close captioning on and you'll catch every word that way. So beautiful! :)
Great song and video, Cyndi cast her real-life mother Catrine as her mother in the video, as well as her lawyer, her manager, her brother Butch and her dog Sparkle. Art imitates life. "All through the night" is also a great song
@@FABIO_MARTINSS she absolutely is, I read her autobiography Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir, and my respect for her went even higher. What she's been through, so many medical issues, and all the while so charming and generous. And after the tsunami in Japan, everyone else canceled their shows, but she stayed to provide comfort to a grieving populace. Music is healing. She's just wonderful.
Whoooooooo! This was such a damn ANTHEM for us in the 80s. Cyndi Lauper has SUCH a voice, and she is so very versatile.... I hope you do more of her work. The final scene with all the people in the room and then falling out the door is a riff on the crowded cabin scene from 'A Night at the Opera', the classic Groucho Marx movie.
Since you mentioned Andre The Giant, he did appear on Cyndi's video. "Good Enough" from the Goonies soundtrack. Two part loooong video with several then-WWF stars appearing, like Roddy Piper, Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, Classy Freddy Blassie. Also the kid actors from the movie. Recommend at least watching them, if not necessarily reacting to them.
This is truly fun, joyous, bubblegum, pop and I love it. It's the soundtrack of my early teens. Cyndi made us people who weren't jocks but were a little odd and artsy feel like we belonged. I completely agree with all of her song recommendations in this comment section. "Time after time", "true colours", and "drove all night", were all proof that she was so much more than just your average pop star. Just stunning.
Ms. Lauper is a greatly underrated talent as a songwriter and singer. I think it's because of her humor and wit. But check out her live of "Money Changes Everything" later in life. Blows me away. Great job on the video, as always.
At 4:19 "Daddy dear" is professional wrestler "Captain" Lou Albano. Pinning him to the wall and making it look easy is a move right up his alley. At 10:45 we see the Hunchback of Notre Dame silent movie with Lon Chaney as Quasimodo.
Elizabeth, that film clip at 11:15 is from the 1923 silent 'The Hunchback Of Notre Dame', starring Lon Chaney as the hunchback, Quasimoto. It's not Andre "the Giant". And that bit at 22:10 where the partygoers are falling through the opened door must have been lifted from a Marx Brothers movie: 'Duck Soup', I think. And yeah, Cyndi has a unique (and squeaky!) voice. Great song! And a great video, too!
I'm so happy to have seen you with the giant smile on your face that I hoped you would have! There are other fun songs from our generation. I hope you get to hear them too. Btw, Cyndi has other great songs I hope you'll listen to soon. ❤

Roam totally rocks. And Kate Pierson’s part of Shining Happy People as well.
@@BalBurgh And "Candy" with Iggy Pop.
Or Rock Lobster. I think Elizabeth would enjoy the strange vocalizations by Kate and Cindy in that one!
@@modernmedeamedia She actually did Rock Lobster already. 😀🦞
She's still great today. One of my favorite ladies from 80's!
I saw Cyndi when this album came out at Jones Beach..she was fantastic. Still is!
I saw her at Pier 17 on this tour too! It was my second concert ever.
Cyndi's strong accent comes through in her singing more than just about anyone I've ever heard. Its unique and I like it.
Honestly Elizabeth should look up an interview with Cyndi, her speaking voice is pretty unique as well.
Dolores O'Riordan of _The Cranberries_ is also famous for letting her real Irish accent show in her singing.
Requiescat in pace, Dolores.
Very true; having spent my childhood in NYC, I love Cyndi’s accent
@@carlos-fv1rc It doesn't get much more Brooklyn than Cyndi's accent.
Well she's from Brooklyn and that is one unique accent
My suggestion if you want to hear a live performance would be "Money Changes Everything ".
Many of her dresses came from an old thrift store called Screaming Mimi's which was her favorite place to shop. Including this red dress.
Usually mentioned in the album sleeve; “thanks to Laura and Biff at Screaming Mimis”
She actually worked in Screaming Mimi’s but often joked she had to quit because she would spend her entire paycheck by buying all the clothes herself.
I grew up with such music. We need more like this these days... More bands and talented performers...
The 80s had the best music
the superior song is Time After Time
Seconded! But there should be a comparison/contrast between Cyndi Lauper's original version and Javier Colon's cover.
also all through the night
This melody is undeniable. I def prefer this to Time After Time. Which is still a great song.
Watching you discover these gems and I 'discover' them again. They mean a lot to me. Thank you!
Cyndi has one of the most recognizable singing styles. I am glad you found time to do a first analysis.
She Bop, Time After Time, True Colors, Money Changes Everything. She has many great songs. I hope you dive into more of them.
I think maybe Hulk Hogan had a little bit to do with the WWF explosion.
Cyndi Lauper has a really strong New York accent and that definitely contributes to her voice.
That scene at the end where everybody crowds into her bedroom is a shout out to that classic Marx Brothers film 'A Night At The Opera'.
I've seen this video dozens of times since it came out and never noticed that there was a conehead in the back of the room.
And there was also a guy that looked a bit like Dieter Meier from Yello.
...and don't forget an appearance by Steve Forbert as the guy in the tux with the flowers!
@@morrisonAV meet me in the middle of the day let me know everything's ok...
I love this video. Cyndi is an awesome voice from the 80's. And the inclusion of Captain Lou Albano as the dad. Pure Awesome.
Cyndi Laupers version of I Drove All Night is absolutely stunning too!
I love this, especially since I finally got to see Cyndi live a couple weeks ago. I was born in 1970 and grew up with her music. So awesome thanks for covering her!
😄 Ha! I just knew there was some Cyndi Lauper in you, opera girl.
Delightful hearing about you puddle jumping. I can see it.
Time after time and I drove all night, will demonstrate just how crazy awesome her voice is.
Keep up the good work.... Harrumph
True Colours, Time After Time, and She Bop are awesome, and the latter has a lot of that hiccup sound that you liked here.
Yea I forgot about True Colors and Time After Time. Beautiful songs from my youth. Love you ❤ Elizabeth!
Gotta go with Steve-o in regards to the appreciative comment as regards Ms. Elizabeth❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm pretty sure "daddy" is Lou Albano.
You are correct!
Yes... Back when this song was new, Lou Albano's wrestling career was in full swing, so, Cyndi pinning him on the wall, was particularly cute!
Captain Lou Albano. Captain of what or branch of the military I do not know
Ioi it actually comes from him being captain of his football team @Dr.Claw_M.A.D.
❤ I Love all Her Ballads.
True Colors, is One of my Favorites. Phil Collins does A great rendition, I have to Say I like His Version better Because of the percussion.
Thank You again Elizabeth
For the shirt I Love 😍 it ❤
Listening to her sing "At Last" is jawdropping.
❤ Yes indeed, it is SPECTACULAR!
You recognize that voice on the first note. Great music from an eclectic artist. Love her. Makes you smile.
This. And this and more this.
yes, there's something transcendent that happens there.
I think I'm Going To Be Strong would be my sleeper pick.
We were on the same wavelength! Agree!!!
Jewel starting her singing career as a kid yodeling, and you can definitely hear it in her voice when she sings many of her songs. If you've never listened to her, I'd recommend starting with Who Will Save Your Soul; play her video with the close captioning on and you'll catch every word that way. So beautiful! :)
I'm Gonna Be Strong, very beautiful and emotinal song where Cyndi really shows what she's vocally capable of.
It’s so interesting to get an analysis of a song that I’ve known most of my life. The way a professional describes this unique voice is cool.
Great song and video, Cyndi cast her real-life mother Catrine as her mother in the video, as well as her lawyer, her manager, her brother Butch and her dog Sparkle. Art imitates life. "All through the night" is also a great song
All through the night. Yes, please.
The eight girls surrounding Cyndi in the video are also her real-life friends.
@shaynaformity1384 Cyindi must be a lovely, warm person❤️
I came here to say this, but I knew in my heart it had already been said!
It's time to do Billy Idol Rebel Yell. You wanna see the Elvis lip curl taken as far as it can go, then it's time for Billy!
😂😆 good point!
Yesssss!!!!!!!
You’re doing a lot of music that I grew up with, and that has me very excited!
I'd love to see you cover Time After Time as well.
Captain Lou Albano was her dad in this video, one of her friends from the world of wrestling.
Her version of “I Drove All Night” is fantastic and really shows her range.
Take a listen to "All through the night" the live version ,you won't be disappointed. Especially the beautiful high notes at the end 😊
Ms. Lauper is a greatly underrated talent as a songwriter and singer. I think it's because of her humor and wit. But check out her live of "Money Changes Everything" later in life. Blows me away. Great job on the video, as always.
I think she's very highly rated.
I so love this song. Cyndi Lauper nailed it in every way ... girls do just want to have fun. 💘So uplifting and joyous. 🕹🕹
Perfect thumbnails don't exi-
At 4:19 "Daddy dear" is professional wrestler "Captain" Lou Albano. Pinning him to the wall and making it look easy is a move right up his alley. At 10:45 we see the Hunchback of Notre Dame silent movie with Lon Chaney as Quasimodo.
Girls Just Wanna HavebFun, True Colors, and Time After Time are my favorites from Cyndi's catalog.
We saw Cyndi LIVE the other night here in Atlanta on her farewell tour. OMG, AT 71 SHE STILL HAS IT. Absolutely awesome show.
True Colors is just a must for analysis.
Cyndi sounds like a different person in "I Drove All Night"...Her best song imo.
Yeah, Cyndi is a terrific singer and songwriter - I am hoping to catch the premiere this time 😀
Movie is The Hunchback of Notre Dam from the 1930’s ! Love your channel !! Your analysis is spot on ! Keep it up !
Time After Time - deep, deep dive. Oh and then Weird Al - Girls Just Want to Have Lunch 😂😂😂
Came here to rec the Weird Al version! 😂
A Night at the Opera
You need to check out her live performance of "Money Changes Everything" in Paris. She has power.
I have been listening to Cyndi Lauper since my youth, LOVE her voice, and still do.
Gotta do "Words" by Missing Persons for more of this type of vocalization.
Walking in L.A.
loved the music video, and youre so positive, never a negative word.
Just saw her live for the first time earlier this month. She still has it and can belt.
Cyndi lauper is at the top of her craft in the song "Time after Time" 🧑🍳
"I'm gonna be strong" when Cyndi was with Blue Angel shows her power, range, and grit. Truly amazing
I'm so happy to have seen you with the giant smile on your face that I hoped you would have! There are other fun songs from our generation. I hope you get to hear them too. Btw, Cyndi has other great songs I hope you'll listen to soon. ❤
