  • I show three different types for the Stanley Bailey number 3 smoothing planes focusing on some of the differences between them.
The oldest is a Type 6, which dates back to the late 1880's, a Type 7, which dates to the early 1890's, and a type 12, which was manufactured around 1920.

Thank you! This is more the content I'm looking for. Any forums you would recommend? I've been getting every plane from my local flea market and restoring them. Now I actually need one for use, going with a stan/bail no 3 corrugated. It's oooold but now I know a little more about them

Very nice vid comparison. I'm in the process of searching for a #3 type 12 Stanley smoother for my work bench to be used. Not to collect but to be put to good use. Would you say that Bailey was top of the line or just budget line plane?

Thanx for the video, as far as the tote goes I think its possibly.the wrong one, I kno the earlier totes had a wider base

Yeah, my No. 3 plane does not seat well either. There's quite of bit of lateral play, opposed to the incremental vertical pitch and decent you experience. I'd imagine a lot of slot-less press work with worn bits and hand marked centers, being held down by nothing more than the difference of that exact part of the day and exhaustion had something to do with it - But honestly I don't know, never looked into it.
