I hate to say but I think too many horses end up on the big trucks because time was not spent on training and working with a kindness toward the horse. All animals may be trained with patience and confidence. You have proven this over and over again.
I think this pony is very aware of its senses, particularly his eyes, horses can only see greens & greys which in turn plays with their perception of determining depth of objects, I think that's why most boundary fences are either black or white Building confidence as you say Barry, haha, love it He's a good boy ✌️
I totally get the problem you are presenting. It is a potential safety issue. I wonder...because he is really a good boy....if he has one of those funny eyesight problems or something has happened to him before when the puddle is dirty. He is getting better and better though. He trusts you, I hope his owner is able to put hours and hours in the box seat with this horse. He is a lovely fellow. He is trying.
He acts like my horse did after he stepped into a pond at a new Stable and ended up , up to his neck and had to swim to the other side. Prior to that he didn't mind puddles. But he got over it with direction, patience and love.
I wonder if he gets upset when he goes through a puddle because the hole in the road that creates the puddle, pulls against him and it feels unpredictable? He has a lot of energy, that's obvious. Flash is a grand looking horse that any horse lover would fall in love with. Humans are not prefect and animals are not perfect. I think with time, Flash may accept the crazy feeling he gets with going through a puddle...
I do enjoy your point of view...a road mapped-out for the manhole covers. Interesting your prayer for larger puddles was answered. Not that Flash enjoyed them. He walks-out well. Thank you for showing the "unpredictability" problem. Thank you to you and Rhi for working on sorting it.
Definitely something that will need to be worked out for saftey. That one puddle had the reflection of the tree in it which might have added to the scary, but he's going to need go where his driver asks regardless. Agree with you on the whip. I never use my whip when my horse is frightened, that would only make his experience worse. Encouragement and patience is the way to go when dealing with fear. Thank you for another great video!
Never bore your horse. When horses don't have enough challenges, they'll find one, like a good child. In my opinion, this horse has a great potential for willingness to perform for head- and bodywork. That was also the goal of all good horse breeders, in pre-engine times --- After four to eight hours of work in front of a 1000 Pound hay cart, he goes through every puddle, on the way home, I think. "Especially towards a gelding man is committed to showing him every day what he is in the world for" (Trakiturnus)
My boy once stopped dead rather than jump a shiny roll top that he could see his reflection in. Couldn’t even get mad, just glad I didn’t fall off. Only time he ever stopped at a fence.
I tend to think of a horse and its driver/rider as safe to drive should be designated, even if it is in the case of unknown events that are alien to him is sufficiently controllable. That means e.g. that it doesn't jump a meter to the side, when there is a loud bang because a pallet has fallen over in a truck next to him. That's a high one difficult to achieve claim, for many horses and their drivers. It usually requires a lot and constant driving. But today, road traffic is already generally poisoned, because giving up the car (wheelchair) --- for many very old people means leaving everything and moving to an old people's home. That's why it's often read that, for example, a schoolgirl first had to be run over before an old person gave up their driver's license. ---- So it is wise today, for everyone, to avoid roads. I often drive cross-country on cycle paths, which are usually used very little.
Hes so green with this problem...would a lead help...to follow another pony...give him some confidence..he is lovely...just misreading the puddles....😊
When I look through the videos like this, then I'll get to the point where I think that everything is said and shown. However, what is not so easy to film are exceptional situations. But these are also crucial. Example: I learn from Barry Hook that slippery ground is helpful when teaching a horse to stand still. So I drive onto a natural stone paving surface. Well, the horse is not making good progress, but is so surprised that it almost falls. --- What to do if a horse falls and you are alone? A big problem today is also: 1. that some people film you rather than help you when you need their help. 2.When it comes to seconds, you first have to tell them 1 minute what to do. 3.Many are useless to help through fear. 4. You hardly meet people anymore, since they are all either at work, in front of the PC/TV or in bed. In the car, many don't feel responsible for stopping and are always in a hurry. So it needs the best preparation of horse and man !, especially if you drive alone! A book about exceptional situations writing could be a consummate work of Barry Hook's service that will bring most benefit. For example: "How do you prepare for surprises and how do you react to them."
He will do it - he was originally uncertain but now he does the river quite confidently. It's a funny thing - quite often horses with puddle problems don't really mind the river!
Hi Diane, there are videos of Flash last year on our channel that show some of his issues with manholes and puddles. Have a search for "Flash" and you should find them!
It would be nice to put him out in a 4m x 6m yard of pavement & gravel w/ puddles across it to desensitize him on his own time. Water & folder on opposite ends thx!
I wonder if he is afraid of sliding on the surface. He may have had a bad experience in the winter. I haven’t had a horse yet that will go through puddles when in discipline. They’ll walk through just fine and with total abandon when they are in the field. I just don’t get it.
Ive got a nervous Clydesdale but he is a great working horse out in the street. Ive had kids throw fire crackers under the team out in public (little horror's) but my horse was fine. I think some horses need a world of consistency and honest work. My horses were worked about 20 hours a week around the same streets night and day for about 4 years. Sound as a pound now, can pull them out after a spell and does not take them long to settle into it.
Put him in an empty pit, on a warm sunny day, after a ride tie him up and shower him. Then he stands happily in the middle of a puddle, enjoying the coolness, the sunshine and his beautiful smiling reflection under him.
No offense, But If you put him in an empty pit, what would you be able to tie him too??? If there was something to tie him to, it wouldn’t be an empty pit would it?? 😜

Yes! He's not seeing just another "puddle". He is seeing all the objects that are reflected by the water - trees, branches, clouds, sharp bulky parts of buildings, dark black holes. Each reflection is unique, different and fraught with danger.
Hi Anna, at home there are people who ride him - they do have the same problem with the puddles ridden, however since Flash has managed to get over his problems with manholes driven, they are able to ride him over them no problems too.
Curious why you never show videos of when things aren’t quite so perfect? As you mentioned in this video that when you first started working with this horse that when he’d see a man hole he would spin right around. That if a car was coming he’s run right into it. That’s the part or your training that I would be interested in watching. Believe me you are a master at what you do, and I have great respect for that but your video footage is of all perfectly trained horses going down the road. Confident, safe and happy. They don’t start like that for sure but that’s the part you don’t show. Is how exactly you get to that stage.

Hi Dwayne, we understand people like to see the full process, however these videos are mostly for the owners to show their horse's progress - and they are usually already aware of how 'bad' they were in the first place! The other issue with filming the 'not so perfect' bits are it tends to be all hands on deck, not on cameras. Occasionally we capture something that isn't the finished product and do film it when we can. For example, check out Flash and his manhole-avoiding last year - where he is spinning around in the road: th-cam.com/video/ETWc3-Jrng0/w-d-xo.html There are a fair few videos on our channel showing the horses definitely not perfect yet if you have a look, so it's not a case of 'never' just a case of 'less often'.
