I am an insurance agent. For over 25 years I have visited thousands of clients in their homes to discuss insurance products. As you might expect, over that time, I have noticed certain trends or commonalities in peoples homes’ subject to demographics such as their age, their income, their race, their geographic area etc. But there is one thing that jumped out at me throughout all this time: When I’d be at a customer’s house, I would often glance at their bookcases or bookshelves and subconsciously read the titles of the books as I am talking to them, just as a curiosity to see what they like to read. But i gradually noticed that a very large majority of black people, regardless of income level, age, or geographic area, tended to not have any books anywhere in sight. It was a strange phenomenon. Because I always enjoyed seeing what other’s read and often I’d glance at a title and i’d look it up later and sometimes I’d even end up reading the book myself. But it got to a point where if it was a black customer, I could almost be certain that there wouldn’t be any books ; there were always exceptions but it’s just a trend that I noticed. It’s not a bias I had; At first, I didn’t go into a black person’s house telling myself “they probably don’t do much reading”. Its just a trend I noticed.

It's almost as if you can't get a free library card these days. Parenting laziness goes a lonnggg way.
