  • Video footage of two fantastic angling sites within the Public Angling Estate in County Down.
Spelga - Spelga reservoir is an upland wild brown trout fishery. It’s a 60 hectare reservoir located right in the heart of the Mourne Mountains, County Down.
The best sport is fly-fishing for wild brown trout on a summers day and late into a summer evening. Popular flies are Bibio, Zulu, and Black Pennel.
Castlewellan - Castlewellan Lake is located in the picturesque Castlewellan Forest Park Castlewellan, County Down.
The lake is 41.6 hectares and 21m at the deepest and is stocked brown and rainbow trout fishery.
Fishing from the bank is accessible as there is a perimeter path of approximately 4km all the way around the lake from where most angling takes place.
Fly- fishing from a boat is becoming more popular especially in the evening time. Anglers can bring their own boat and launch at the slipway provided.
Petrol outboard engines are not allowed but electrically powered or rowing is allowed.
For those with disabilities there is an upgraded tarmac car park beside the lake.
A limited number of keys for disabled anglers with a blue badge are available from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in February, on a first come first served basis, which allows disabled anglers access around the lake by car.
Angling requirements for these sites and further info can be found within the links included below.

Can I ask why anglers cannot partake in lure angling/worming from the boat?

@@BreakerBreakerYeo they were but our eastern european friends have netted most of county down and deara does nothing to stop it, more concerned with stocking non native fish species than protecting the wild ones we already have un our waters

@@bastar count yourself lucky theres not a pike left in the quoile basin and deara wont re-stock them in a letter to the quoile angling ass. they quoted "deara does not partake in the stocking of non-native fish"
