  • Join me while we check out the exciting recent agate, jasper, and fossil finds from our latest beach hunts here on the Central Oregon Coast. We will take a closer look at a very special jasper, peer into some of our fossils with the microscope, and hopefully break open a giant scallop shell (known as a pecten) that hasn't seen the light of day for millions of years! Please jump in the chat to ask questions and lend your expertise, as well as join in on the tangents and fun while we have our Friday Night hangout!

Jelly bean jasper is supposedly around haystack butte in the owyhee mountains area. Beautiful stuff. BTW you’re hilarious… I think all us rockhounds have the same cheesy sense of humor. Great finds. I learned so much on your beach video. I’ve come across a lot of the fossils and/or bones and just thought they were junky rocks. I’m going to look more closely next time.

Nice, rachael! It's crazy what having 'better eyes' can help you find that you didn't know was there, lol! Thanks for the info on the jelly bean. I've been seeing a fair amount about it lately, and we go to the Owyhees a fair amount (one of our dogs being named after them) so I'm interested in going after some! Thanks for the great feedback and for watching, cheers!

Hi Karen, I truely appreciate your great content and energy. Can you tell me if the fossilized bone or turedo wood will take a polish. Thanks

Thanks for the kind words! Both the fossil bone and the teredo wood take a lovely polish most of the time. The teredo wood is sometimes not well permineralized and the sedimentary rock sometimes not ideal, but most of the time, it's really beautiful polished. Thanks for watching, cheers!

Are there rules for Oregon beaches? Where are they listed? Thank you. New to your channel. The Oregon coast is my happy place.

There are rules for our beaches here. #1, You have to have fun. Okay, that goes without saying, but seriously there are rules for collection that you can google. You're allowed 3 gallons of collected items (rocks, fossils) from the beaches annually, only one gallon in a day, that are for personal use, ie. 'mementos' and cannot be used for resale/commercially. You can't dig into the cliffs or reef. There are some rules about larger cobble and the amount of driftwoods you can take as well. Unspoken rules would be pack your own trash and as much as you can off the beach as well. Please be careful about where you park and what is in your car, break ins are far more normal than they should be. Let me know if there are more questions that you have, thanks for watching, cheers!
