As a Mayo woman, its lovely to see my county's involvement in the War of Independence. My maternal grandfather was involved as a young man & was granted a military funeral in 1982.

I am British but I utterly detest every Black & Tan that entered Ireland. They are the scum of the Earth. What they did to Ireland is unforgivable and I hooe every one of them rots in hell for eternity. The British who ordered this are an abomination to humanity. I adore Ireland and am so filled with rage by what was done there. If I can meet those Black and Tans in an afterlife...
A brilliant documentary, i only wish that the British government left Ireland alone in the first place, i am born and bred in England and not proud of the way the Irish were treated over the years, i have been coming to Ireland for the whole of my adult life and so enjoy the hospitality, may the land and its people go from strength to strength in the future.
The best film that I've watched on this subject. It was so interesting for me as it was Dr Madden that brought my mother into the world, and I mentioned this fact at her funeral earlier this week. As well as that, my grandmother's first cousin, Seamus McEvilly, who was killed at Kilmeena, is mentioned in the film.
I really enjoyed this. A lot of people in now a days don't know about our history. It was never thought to us in schools. I'm 37 years of age. They didnt want us to know. I'm very thankful for this documentary. Thank you and to our country woman and man that had to go through it all for themselves and for us today. It must have been really horrible

I have been trying to learn as much as I can about their lives. It was wonderful to see places near where they lived, as I have never been to Ireland. Thank you so much.
Oh my gosh... My grandfather was from Islandeady, John Moran, had a couple of forges in Co Mayo where he worked as a blacksmith & farrier. He got a service medal "for services rendered" - the rumour in the family was he ran guns from Glasgow at one point, and had IRA soldiers billeted on his property. I'm told he left under a black cloud in 1924 having married his older brother Frank's sweetheart, Brigid Morrison. She used the threaten him when he'd get out of hand, saying "I'll tell them what you did!" He was not a nice guy, his kids knew his wrath well, so the thought of what he might have done is the source of quite some speculation.

John was a blacksmith from Newport; Bridget was from Beltra, Islandeady - hence the marriage in that parish. John’s father was Francis Moran; Bridget’s Patrick Morrison, both farmers.
And so today we continue to revive our language, our sports, our music and our deep appreciation for the men and women who suffered and gave their lives willingly for future generations of Irish people to live in peace. I am deeply grateful for their sacrifices. I am a free Irish man today

This is a brilliant account of events. My grandfather was a very senior officer in the Ballina Brigade and as a child I listened with fascination to stories of that time. He had one regret. Sgt Armstrong Who was killed in Ballina , was a decent family man whose death he regretted, and he was there.

Hi Ruari, I'm John O'Grady and my Mom is Mary Duffy, one of Johnnie Duffy's daughters. He was a real hero. I'd always pester him about the wartime and what was it like and finally he told me this: You'll be laying out in a field all night in the cold rain so bring newspapers to wrap around your arms and legs and that will help you keep warm. Some war story, huh? I love him and respect him even more for this. No derring-do, no adventure, just a really unpleasant experience out in the cold and dark, and deadly dangerous as well. He did time in prison for being a Drill Instructor but once Ireland got its freedom he got out and beat his swords into ploughshares, then built a beautiful house in Knockrooskey and built a great family too. I will always love him and Grandmother. BTW, Have you ever seen photos of them when they were young and courting? A beautiful couple and so obviously in love with each other. Sharp dressers too! Also, if you go to 21:20 you will see Grandfather, bottom row, 3rd from left. You can see his face in this photo. His face used to be hidden in shadow but some digital magic happened and there he is! They even talk about the photo at 1:02:53 . A question: At 29:26 , is that the top of Altamount Street where the railroad track used to go over Altamount? Because that is where we lived, next to Mrs. Reidy. It's off-camera to the left. I don't remember it being called the Red Bridge, maybe it got that name later? Thank you for posting Ruari. I'm an English fellow, though not living in the UK at the time. Perhaps some some 35 years ago I was offered. by what I can only describe now in later years as an Irish patriot, it was a paperback edition of Thomas Flanagan's exquisite depiction of the 1798 upraising in Mayo: "The Year of The French" Many many years later, some thirty perhaps from first reading, I traced down a hardback copy of this previous masterpiece of Irish literature. How times change; tough I now live in the Republic, my proffering of this book, to not unintelligent friends, seems to fall unappreciated, for reasons I can't imagine. I despair, of Ireland or my circle of friends, I know not what? Perhaps I should ask, modern day Ireland? Or perhaps my circle of friends?
As someone once said ‘romantic Ireland is dead and gone’..very true! And modern Ireland is hardly recognizable as Ireland at all..thanks for sharing the title of the 1798 rising book, I’ll try to track one down ✊🇮🇪
Incredible to watch this. A whole nation arises to fight for freedom. So many heroes. I am ashamed to admit this, as an Irish American--I had no idea the fight for freedom was so widespread and shared by so many. This is a must-watch video for those related to anyone experiencing 800 years of slavery to the British. This history must be shouted out.

Excellent doco that gives good details of the sacrifices made in just one part of Ireland for Irish freedom. In 1905, Norway was ruled by Sweden. Norway decided they wanted out. Sweden had a short think about it and yeah, okay. No one died! And Sweden didn't keep northern Norway. In 1916, Ireland says it wants out, the Brits had a think and nah, lets have a years long war instead. Much like China with Tibet and Russia with Ukraine. Canada however has organised an entire constitutional process to peacefully deal with the day that Quebec ever votes to leave Canada. Oddly enough, unlike some people, they're not planning to choose violence and death as their solution..

Found out about five years ago that my "Scots" great-grandfather and his three brothers were actually Irish Republicans that came to the states right around the era this documentary is about. God himself is probably the only one left who knows there roles or why exactly they fled to or were sent to this continent. 🍀🇮🇪
Ireland, a country of gentle and kindly people yet it is a country that suffered from invasions, savage attacks and brutal treatment from its nearest neighbor Britain for 800 years. The powers that be in Britain had the deepest hatred of the Irish yet when they came to Ireland they loved the country better than their own lands. The British establishment committed genocide in Ireland by stealing the people's homes, their lands and food stocks which they shipped over to Britain to feed its o and helped to cause millions of people to suffer and die from starvation, I wonder how those people explained themselves to God on their day of judgment.

Guys this is an historical documentary told from a certain viewpoint but interesting and informative just the same. It should not be looked at as an IRA Recruiting Video and some of the comments made by certain folk on this forum both pro and anti makes me sad. Remember two traditions not one in Ireland particularly in the North. Parity of esteem. Most of the prods like me are proud Celts just as much as any other Irishman.

I agree. The thing you might not know is early on in the video the narrator states that the whole independence movement had its roots in the young irelanders all the founding members of that organisation were predominantly protestant. He also mentions the 1798 rebellion, most of the leaders back then were prodestent. Not so much in mayo mabey but definitely in antrim where they rose.
Also, Charles Stuart parnell, wolfe tone,and many more Irish heroes were protestant. None of this matters anyway after a couple of decades after the war of independence we betrayed these men and gave it away to join a bigger union where we have even less power and are ruled over by unelected dictators.

The IRA man with proficient markmanship skills was James Flagherty who had served with the Connaught Rangers in WW1. Some sources state it was him who shot and killed DI Stevenson who was driving the first Crossley Tender therefore stoppong it in the KZ(Kill Zone). Also some state he also shot the 3 members of the Crown Forces who tried to get the Lewis machine gun into action. It was him who also opened up with the captured Lewis on the roof of the cottage where the surviving members of the Crown Forces had taken refuge forcing them to surrender.

Indeed the Roman Catholic church , also commanded Henry to basically quash the barbarians upon the island of Ireland. So we have been under the tyranny of many , and during the purges of the Elizabethan rule , the Duke of Ormond an Irishman also, sent as a way of his pledge to the empire, the heads of many Irish men, women and children. The Pope was English at the time who gave Henry the green light which likely has a lot to do with how this all got started. Without his blessing it is hard to see how this went ahead full force.

Excellent doco that gives good details of the sacrifices made in just one part of Ireland for Irish freedom. In 1905, Norway was ruled by Sweden. Norway decided they wanted out. Sweden had a short think about it and yeah, okay. No one died! And Sweden didn't keep northern Norway. In 1916, Ireland says it wants out, the Brits had a think and nah, lets have a years long war instead. Much like China with Tibet and Russia with Ukraine. Canada however has organised an entire constitutional process to peacefully deal with the day that Quebec ever votes to leave Canada. Oddly enough, unlike some people, they're not planning to choose violence and death as their solution..

Guys this is an historical documentary told from a certain viewpoint but interesting and informative just the same. It should not be looked at as an IRA Recruiting Video and some of the comments made by certain folk on this forum both pro and anti makes me sad. Remember two traditions not one in Ireland particularly in the North. Parity of esteem. Most of the prods like me are proud Celts just as much as any other Irishman.

I agree. The thing you might not know is early on in the video the narrator states that the whole independence movement had its roots in the young irelanders all the founding members of that organisation were predominantly protestant. He also mentions the 1798 rebellion, most of the leaders back then were prodestent. Not so much in mayo mabey but definitely in antrim where they rose.
Also, Charles Stuart parnell, wolfe tone,and many more Irish heroes were protestant. None of this matters anyway after a couple of decades after the war of independence we betrayed these men and gave it away to join a bigger union where we have even less power and are ruled over by unelected dictators.

Also some state he also shot the 3 members of the Crown Forces who tried to get the Lewis machine gun into action. It was him who also opened up with the captured Lewis on the roof of the cottage where the surviving members of the Crown Forces had taken refuge forcing them to surrender.
