As a diehard HOTD fan, I'm one of those people who wholeheartedly believes this remaster has the potential to be truly awesome on PC with mods. I really enjoy what they have so far, it just needs some polishing work, a music replacement mod, some animation tweaks (ragdolls are a bit funky, the scientists are janky af and the corpses bloating up look terrible), and perhaps most importantly, some hard tweaking to the Chariot and Magician boss battles. I cannot excuse those two. They are appalling.
Everything else is nearly 1:1 to the original and I couldn't be happier, tbh.
EDIT (05/07/22): After extensive gameplay sessions I can conclude this game is a mess on anything above Normal difficulty. Enemies have randomized damage and reaction times, which is absolute nonsense in a game supposed to reward quick reflexes and careful aim. Some attacks aren't even telegraphed properly and enemies have a tendency to zoom towards you prepping attacks way outside of their range, way faster than you can account for, and some are even completely unavoidable. Arcade mode/Hard on 1CC is nearly impossible as a result. There's no saving this game.

What's conflicting about emulation and pirating for me was how there seems to be no limits or rules as already available games, especially from Indie devs, can be so easily downloaded.
Emulating an obscure or well known game that hasn't been on sale for decades? It's relatively fine, I think.

For me this remake is just "all right" at the best of times. The fact that this game has performance issues with the graphical fidelity it has is just mind-blowing. @@Orange_Swirl To be fair, it's a case of cost and return. House of the Dead is a rather niche franchise of Sega's, if they spent the money to reverse engineer the first game completely, there's no way they would have actually made a profit. • @AnimatedAndrew
    @AnimatedAndrew 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

They actually are remaking House of the Dead 2. I hope they can improve upon the problems this remake had.
I am a die-hard House of the Dead fan and I still honestly had fun with this remake and thought the team behind it did the best job they could having to redo everything from the ground up considering the original source code was lost... I don't know if it's because I've been wanting a new iteration/port of the first game for so long but despite the shortcomings I found myself itching to go back and play it. There's a good game in there for sure but it's held back by the limitations of the Switch.
I wish Forever Entertainment and Megapixel Studios didn't have that exclusivity deal with Nintendo to release their games on Switch first because this game really NEEDS something like the PS Move. There's actually been a listing spotted for it in the PS Store so we may be getting a PS4 port soon, but that should've been the console it launched on from the start, or even PC so the graphics wouldn't be so muddy. Or hell, Nintendo should've made a Zapper accessory or something utilizing an IR sensor bar like the Wiimote did because gyro controls are just not the way to play it. I don't think it's a problem with this game as I hear even Switch games with good gyro pointer controls experience drift... it's just not cut out for games where you point at stuff.
At the end of the day, I do wish this remake could be better, but honestly I feel like it at least launched in a decent state. Perhaps once they patch it and put it on better optimized consoles it will hopefully iron out the issues. It doesn't surpass the original House of the Dead, which is a game I have a lot of sentimental value towards since I grew up playing it and it sparked my love for arcades and video games... but I'm glad we at least have a new iteration of it on modern consoles. It may not be the game we grew up playing but it's still a fun time... in my opinion, of course.

The first half of this review seems rather misinformed. HotD2 has been ported too many times to count but as you mentioned there are no true proper ports of HotD1. This is because Sega lost their original source code back in the 90's and can no longer port the first game. HoTD1 really needed a proper solution and this was it. I would of been rather disappointed if they started with HotD2 as the first remake; we don't need the 9millionth port of that.

Sega outside of doing rom dumps of their 2D era games have done nothing with their 3D classics, or are even bothering to release new installments of their classic franchises. Streets of Rage 4, Panzeer Dragoon, House of the Dead, and Alex the Kid were all developed and published without Sega.
If it weren't for the small studios madeup of fans of these great Sega franchises, we wouldn't be getting anything from these classic franchises. So I'm willing to overlook some rough edges but I do have my limits. And my apologies for this comment basically turning into a blog post.

Regardless to how great the overall visuals has been overhauled. I found that their missing gaps that what makes the original went far beyond than the remakes:
First, their missing opportunities to make the monster animation using the motion capture. Back in 1996 original, most of the zombies, some NPCs and main characters were animated using the motion capture which makes all of the zombies move so realistically menacing, while the remake just redone it with traditional hand made animation which makes it less intriguing and so cheesy.
The original motion capture were done at the limited technology but quickly convincing the player (in my pov) to tell that these zombies were like real humans and move aggressively as a monster. For the biggest example is like Chariot boss fight where back in the day the original crew animated him using mo-cap suit and using a broom to mimic his big spear, and with his maniacal movement it is sold enough to be real scary big dudes on a hunt. The remake just overly changed that with the cheesy hand animation that sold less the menacing appearance of this cool looking boss creatures.
Second is the character design particularly Sophie. Yes I know they wanna make her fully Caucasian, but in my opinion she is less attractive to compare with the original one. Her facial animation makes her kinda doofies at some moment rather than being terrified on the hunt from the zombies. If they could tweaked this it'll be a lot better.
Third is the camera movement when they're encountering an enemy, especially on the boss fight. Back in the day, the camera movement were totally feel like the 1st perspective of you seeing thing in front of you where you can see the movement of your enemies and make it kinda had that "shaky" feel so it convinced you that you're involved into the fight. The remake just fully redone it on a static camera and make it kinda look like a shooting gallery on the arcade shooting center, that's a real shame.
Fourth, the voice acting. I think The House of The Dead 1 had a better subtle voice act to compare with shitty the House of The Dead 2 voice act. And this remakes totally made that like in the House of The Dead 2 one. It sure as heck the writing is cheesy BUT at least they can improve it with their voice acting, just like in the 1996 original one.
In a nutshell, the remake's kinda less immersive to compare with the original one. While the visual's wise it is without question their only big point.

And as a compensation since you are already overpowered with different weapons the fights are always with hordes of zombies or zombies take a lot of hits with difficult boss fights.

The source code for the first game (original version) was lost sometime in the late 1990s/early 2000s along with the code for the Sega Saturn classic RPG Panzer Dragoon Saga, which is why this game had to be remade, though I will admit that Sega could have just taken the original arcade version and put a fancy menu/frontend on it with a Sega Model 2 emulator attached (Nintendo do the same thing for re-releases of the original Super Mario Brothers, which also suffered the same fate). I was a bit pissed off that my now-10-year-old PC can't run this game (though it can emulate the original arcade version and play the PC port just fine), but after watching this, I don't think I should feel too bad.

It's odd how they chose to release it on Switch for all things, it just seems like an absolute hit or miss when it comes to that platform and ends up giving games more complaints thrown upon release. I ended up just buying the PC version after hearing about a port coming in the same month and had a blast. The corpses also not disintegrating like on the switch makes the ragdolls actually fun since shooting mutants across the room never seems to get old and the graphics seem alright now as well.
My biggest complaints would be a lack of online co-op, for someone who has friends who wanna try it living halfway across the planet, it's a bummer how a remake doesn't offer remote-play even when it's released on a platform like Steam.
The OST itself is alright, but I prefer the original regardless since the new one feels more "nostalgic" than actually fitting for the game itself which is a bit odd but I only liked it for that feeling since I've played the games since childhood.
And a big missed opportunity was the PC mode, that was one of the things that made the original port stand out and it would've been great to have it across all platforms in the remake but it's just not present.
Even if you can mod in the original OST and a PC "mod" might be made, you can't really expect someone to put in work and effort like that when the people who make the games can do it best.

I can safely say the control issue is a Switch thing. Been spending a lot of time with it playing Switch Sports as well as this and Splatoon 2 and...yeah these are worse gyros than the Wii MotionPlus or WiiU pad. Anything that requires accuracy is out of the question. THAT SAID, there's an indie game on Switch called Assault Chaingun SKM which is a Gunblade NY clone and THAT works great with the gyro controls because it's about spraying bullets everywhere instead of accuracy. Perhaps it would be best to focus on mounted lightgun games like Operation Wolf or Steel Gunner (or Lucky & Wild PLEASE).

Is there a sensor bar available for the Switch? The Switch joycons have an IR camera on the right joycon like the Wii remote, but without a sensor bar I feel like that feature is useless.
