I am truly BLESSED . I saw Tales from the Crypt , Vault of Horror and Asylum in the theatre at the age of 10 / 11 years old ! I had neighbors that were dropped off at the local theatre showing Tales from the Crypt and then the music & credits began -- they RAN to the lobby and called their mother to pick them up and take them home ! They were horrified and the stories did not even start yet !
@@LannieLord Thats a great story. I was the same with the film Jaws, i kept on at my parents I wanted to see it. When it was broadcast on t.v we all sat down, the music started and I ran out the room terrified until the channel was changed after all that !! Kids are funny. 🤣
Absolutely - Tales of the Crypt is a definitive exampe of the genre. I love portmanteau films where you get 4 films or so in 1 . Thanks for commenting.
In the NYC/NJ area (Late '70s/early '80s), I remember most of these films appeared during the week on late afternoons- the last film before the 6pm News (and right before my parents came home from work!). If was raining all day, it was perfect!!

Absolute gem of work by yourself. This continuing document of AMICUS is great not only in length but details. As Amicus like Hammer appear rarely on TV nowadays and are true (often horrific however they appear tame now) memory of many viewers. Brilliant.
Absolutely superb. But, of course, by this stage we would expect nothing less from Crab. If, in a hypothetical situation, someone asked me "Who were Amicus? What did they do?" I could do no better than direct them straight here. So much research! And offered up with humour and style. I'm pretty much fully in accord with your appreciation of these films and really like the way you've described them in the context of how the company developed. Admittedly, they've aged, some better than others, but they hold a special place . Some years ago, to cheer me up. Mrs G bought me "Tales from the crypt", then later. "Asylum". The collection will grow. I'm old enough to remember when these films were fairly new and were first shown on TV. I was a spoilt brat and was allowed to watch whatever I liked. I remember feeling sorry for old Grimsdyke, chilled by the murderous Santa, shocked by Ian Hendry's Decayed face, and just fascinated by the whole genre. These days, it's the period look that grabs me just as much and I'll go "Look at that wallpaper! That sofa, we had one of those! How about that lampshade! Look at those clothes, my parents dressed like that!" As I'm sure I've said before, charging around in 1880s middle Europe waving garlic is fine, but contemporary settings have different impact, hence the appeal of the more relatable "Portmanteau " films. So, yes , very much enjoying this series and I know one or two of my personal favourites will feature in the next part.

Yes! I've been eagerly waiting for Asylum since you started this series. The image of the wiggling, paper-wrapped limbs in the freezer haunted me ever since I was a wee child after seeing a TV ad for it during a late 70s rerelease in America. I was way too young to see the film or even remember the title, but I was obsessed by the memory for 40 years until I saw a DVD trailer and finally put the pieces together, so to speak. Thoroughly interesting, entertaining and very well researched. I somehow missed the verdict for Asylum - that was the one I remember watching as a kid and I liked the Lucy segment the most.
What an absolute treat these lengthy videos are. Just wonderful. Cup of tea, and I sat back and relived these glorious Amicus days, the narration funny and informative. Thanks so much for all this - even if I do enjoy I, Monster quite a lot! - and here's to many more of these. So pleased you featured Jack and Jill too! Vanessa Howard should have been a big star. @@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN Already did for me. Slowing building up a collection following the recommendations, this segment was packed with goodness. I have Asylum already and loved it. As well as Tales from the Crypt smorgasbord. 🤣. I, Monster was certainly tempestuous behind the scenes (more so than most Amicus priductions!). As you say that's why it's a bit jumpy however at least it was made. It's faithful to the original but alas not executed particularly well. It's interesting researching these movies as not only does it provide background into the films but also provides insight into low budget film making in general and the many frustrations of all concerned. It's amazing when everyone gets on and you can really 'sense' that in the end result and when it doesn't. Thanks for your comment. 🤗🦀
And you are the Reseach Master beyond Compare. Nobody touches you for depth and Specialist Knowledge of the Genre. I have spread the Gospel of Crab Apple all over the Hammer Horror Subreddit on Reddit, telling the Redditors to watch your videos and leaving links to your channel. I will do whatever it takes for people to know of your great work. Incidentally, on Reddit l compared your critique of Films to a sumptuous Six course meal of incredible depth and Mark Gatiss's 2009 three part History of Horror to a light snack,it's very shallow and a skim over British/US Horror but enjoyable. What did you think of his Series l wonder!? Imagine,BBC CRAB APPLE- 8 part Series of British Horror,oh Lordy, That is something l would love to see. ❤️ 💙 💜 Here is hoping.
@@IRISHguitarist777 Thank you so much for spreading the gospel according to crab, or epiphany rather as I love these films so much and glad, to most, it shines through. I like Gatiss and would love to take tea with him. I thought his horror documentary was decent enough as more need to take the horror genre and adult film genre (the ones with plots) more seriously and treat as art (something the British struggle with doing as we always seem to see film as film). However, like myself, there is so much to cram in to be definitive and so many resources. It can be difficult and especially giving the movie a rating and conclusion without being swayed or influence by others. For Gatiss or anyone to do a definitive encyclopedia would need 100 programmes or more and ones dedicated to a certain genre though you find yourself digressing so much. I am afraid the BBC has had it but I think if I wanted my documentaries to be shown elsewhere apart from you tube then talking pictures t.v would be a home as they show so much wonderful retro stuff including Amicus. There's a massive uptake in viewers for the channel and rightly so. Many thanks for championing me and for commenting as always it's an absolute pleasure to hear from you. Best 🦀
You are an absolute talent and I always look forward to your next installment. And now the screaming starts. Proper shit me up as a lad that did 😂. Must hunt a copy out.
For my money, Asylum has the best wraparound in the series. Though House that Dripped Blood and From beyond the Grave also have great ones. Never been a huge fan of And Now the Screaming Starts. It had so much potential but doesn't quite live up to it, frustratingly. I agree that Stephanie Beecham does a great job. I heard an interview with her on a BBC radio doc about Hammer and she was quite self depricating about her acting. She was definitely capable of delivering a fine performance.
Thanks for the titbits. Can't believe Beacham said that - she is brilliant in all her roles. She would give Edwige Fenech a run for her money in hysterics as well as Charlotte Rampling.
Great work , did I hear the theme music to the 70s tv show Shadow of Fear in your documentary, loved that show when I was a child, yes I was a weird child .😊
Another wonderful deep dive into the Amicus heartland! Tremendous stuff, as ever, but no mention of Bayldon’s frankly jaw dropping turn as Doctor Starr?
Another fab episode, Crab Apple. I agree, I'd love to see an HD copy of _What Became of Jack and Jill?_ as well. Did you know that British actress Vanessa Howard married movie producer Robert Chartoff in 1970, which is probably the reason why she threw in the acting towel after a number of movie flops. Chartoff would go on to produce the _Rocky_ boxing series with Irwin Winkler, plus Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull. Oh, and _Tales From the Crypt_ (1972) is one of my favourite horror films of all time.
I was really looking forward to your coverage of Tales From the Crypt, and you didn't disappoint. That said, I can not wait for the next installment, as I'll be very curious indeed to hear what you'll have to say regarding the notorious censorship demands placed on Vault of Horror.
I keep wishing for you to appear in my notifications every week, Crab, but I guess scarcity generates value, and I'll take your quality over any quantity,
Although they were both A listers and icons , Joan Collins, based on her movie portfolio was more 'sleeves-rolled-up' although Liz Taylor did her bit of art house/horror too.

Best 🦀
An Honour Sir,thank you as always for your precious time and reply.
You are an absolute talent and I always look forward to your next installment. And now the screaming starts. Proper shit me up as a lad that did 😂. Must hunt a copy out.
It's a surprisingly decent flick shame it's not on home media in the U.K. might be able to stream it though. 🦀
On TH-cam 🎉
Glad your back. I've been looking forward to this.
More to come!

Yes! Been waiting for this. Great way to round off the week.
Hope you enjoyed it!
You have a real skill, I enjoys your videos on so many levels. Excellent.
Thank you very much!
@@robertseddon2512 You did indeed. Nothing weird in that.
Another wonderful deep dive into the Amicus heartland! Tremendous stuff, as ever, but no mention of Bayldon’s frankly jaw dropping turn as Doctor Starr?
Unfortunately I couldnt cover everyone but feel his virtues were highlighted in House that Dripped Blood but he will no doubt pop up again. 😀
Herbert Lom, the best Blofeld the bond films never had. He would have been perfect in the role.
I have to say I liked Charles Gray, though. He has that right amount of calm, sinister to him.
Thanks for that nugget. I didnt know that. 🦀
@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN Glad I could be of assistance, Crab Apple. Love your channel. One of the best cult movie channels on YT, if not the very best.
I was really looking forward to your coverage of Tales From the Crypt, and you didn't disappoint. That said, I can not wait for the next installment, as I'll be very curious indeed to hear what you'll have to say regarding the notorious censorship demands placed on Vault of Horror.
I keep wishing for you to appear in my notifications every week, Crab, but I guess scarcity generates value, and I'll take your quality over any quantity,
Doing this and a full time job creates delay, if I win a windfall then expect that. I would truly be living the dream for sure.
What the Peeper Saw(1972) was released here in Britain as Night Hair Child it was also the top half of a double with Death Line
Always loved Joan Collins. Always thought she was gorgeous.
Beautiful woman, they all were back then. Barbara Parkin, Beacham and Ekland too. They could all act as well !!
Pity Joan wasn't a Bond girl
@@garybryant5946 She nearly landed the Cleopatra role before Liz Taylor was miscast in it.
Although they were both A listers and icons , Joan Collins, based on her movie portfolio was more 'sleeves-rolled-up' although Liz Taylor did her bit of art house/horror too.

Meilleurs voeux Crab Apple.
Well what an unexpected gem to save an otherwise mediocre week - thank you Crabster!
You're very welcome - enjoy

I believe,Tales that witnessed madness copyed Asylum, not a bad film in its own right.
It did indeed. Will cover tgat seperately. With the people behind it - it's Amicus in all but name really. Best 🦀

@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN Also, you might be interested to know that the Japanese title for 'What Became of Jack And Jill?' is 'Aiyoku No Michizure' - roughly translated as 'Companions Of Lust' (you showed the Japanese film poster in your video). 🙂
