This scene is so perfect in that, without jumpscares, it manages to completely unsettle the viewer. The eerie chanting. The dead silence right before the lights go out. The footsteps in the dark. One of the scariest scenes in horror that I've seen so far.
I agree. But I fear what continuously watching a film like this about creating horrific realities through ritualistic repetition could do to your sanity... 😅
Everything about this scene is fucking terrifying. We see the fire as he walks through the bush, the music hitting us hard, then we see the cult and hear the chanting. The music hits hard again, then we see the fire reach upwards, the main guy looks at the stars, then when he looks back the fire's gone. The complete darkness as the cult shuffle towards the bridge. Then they stop, they see him. They take a step for every one he does. It's chilling and it's horrifically normal. No blood, no monster, no ghost. Just the horror of unknown people.
Just saw this this weekend. I’m in love. Definitely gonna watch this again and again. And p.s. this scene was freaky! I kept expecting them to all turn around and just stare at him 🤭
The unhuman quality in this is superb.. creepy as all hell, like black charcoal deamons straight from hell. The empty man's remains is that from a fallen watcher..
The end of this sense is maybe most funnest and hardest I ever laughed in my life cause I said the exact same thing when it was my first time watching this
To be honest, I used to have a dream like that. A great fire surrounded by a cult, but all dancing around and dark praying so loudly while wearing animals skulls. I had no choice but to run towards near a bridge to trespass their territory in order to survive. By the time they've found out, they started chasing after me in the middle of woods with steep hills at night. It feels both exciting and scary at the same time, possibly I feel like I'm enjoying get chased or running to survive is the best part to get out of reach from the cult.
@The Fincher Analyst. When I watched this scene.... I was like DUDE!... don't stand all out in the open where they can see you. I was waiting for them to charge at him. Two things in horror films you need to remember when dealing with cults; No. 1: EVERYBODY is in on it. and No. 2. Don't let them catch you watching them perform their rituals! ..... Loved the movie though!
A shame you cut out the kind of interesting part. Between the vision and the lining-up 0:55, there is no music, just ambience and chanting, it kinda sounds like they are saying Nyarla(la)thotep.
In this clip they dont. It must have been cut out, because I too clearly remember them walking slowly around the fire chanting "Nyarlahotep". I think it was right after the stars stopped moving.
I've never heard anything about it. And I've read and listened to everything about this film. But that would be a very cool idea. Distribute different edits of the film with different chants, to mess up with people's perception of reality.
@@starsmash7491 That silent moment in the middle is also completely muted. I had to remove a whole chunk of audio, and I edited the video to better conceal it. It was this or not being able to have audio at all.
What I love and hate is I cant tell if this was made with a reactionary intention or not. Like am I supposed to walk away with a metaphor about the scary new-agey millennials with their post-modernism? Or is the ending supposed to cue me in that things are not in fact so simple? Is this Lovecraftian anxiety over new forms of "Other" other than race? Or is this Derrida having a bad trip after reading too much Lovecraft? Or is it both? Long live the new flesh? Am I down and out in Pontypool?

This actually ruined the scene in my opinion. No dialogue was needed.

but didn’t they kinda do that tho? u can’t see their faces
yeah they definitely turned when he took a step back

they are saying Nyarla something like Nyarlatho
They cut that bit out of this scene for the TH-cam video. It’s in the movie itself, just not this clip
