    Thanks Jay, I never even thought about reproducing my felling wedges. Looks like I have a project in the shop during this Sunday’s snowstorm.

    A heat gun can straighten plastic wedges and even be used to turn jugs into felling wedges. I have made hard head felling wedges with steel inserts with a toaster oven.

    I know it's not intended for what I'm trying to do, but:
    I'm looking for a lightweight solution to split small pieces of wood, like 4 inch diameter max.
    Couldn't find any small, lightweight aluminium wedges, lightest was like 7oz - which is pretty heavy in my world.
    So when I saw those smaller plastic felling wedges I was wondering if they'd do the job.
    I'd use a wood piece for batoning, so no metal, could see a little channel into the wood to have something for the edge to start with.
    What would you say? Could that work for a while or will they break after a handful of hits?
    Thanks a lot for not calling me crazy ;)

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! I dont think the plastic felling wedges are designed for that. They are designed to spread wood not split it. If that makes sense. Id try maybe something like this? See the link www.amazon.com/Firewood-Kindling-Splitter-Log-Wood/dp/B079ZXJ8S3/ref=asc_df_B079ZXJ8S3/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=241901362930&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4278979337474103286&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9002488&hvtargid=pla-480651184444&psc=1

    • @GermanBadGuy
      @GermanBadGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HomesteadJay thanks! I know they're not designed for that, but given the small diameters I'm planning on I might just give them a try. I need something lightweight and portable and there's not much else out there...

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GermanBadGuy Yeah you may be better off with a small forestry axe? The felling wedges are just going to fold the edge over. Im trying to aide in helping but these are not for splitting as the plastic isnt designed for pressure impact but its designed for impact pressure as its designed if that makes sense. Would an axe be better?

    • @GermanBadGuy
      @GermanBadGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HomesteadJay thanks, but an axe, as well as a fully batoning proof knife are host much too heavy.
      Thinking about this technique with a lightweight plastic wedge
