I bought a 2023 Silverado Trail Boss with the Duramax for 60k. It’s an LT but it has everything I want. I can get about 495 miles per tank. Best trip thus far was 31 mpg. Average around town 24-26 mpg with a pretty aggressive tire! Love that inline 6. Great for mileage and torque is impressive! I’m a sucker for Diesel. Have a motor home with a Cummins inline 6 and previously owned a DRW Ram with a Cummins! Great vehicles but I don’t need the large towing capacity anymore so this small Duramax is great around town!
I bought a 6.2 23 Denali. I was originally going for a Trail Boss or AT4 with the duramax but really liked the 6.2 when I drove it. Fuel economy is definitely worse but diesel is over $0.40/L more than gas right now.
$88,000.00. That's before all the stuff they nickel and dime you with plus TT&L. So close to 95k total. This is beyond comical.
Almost like it’s the newest fully loaded top trim of a full size diesel truck 🤔
Amen! Who are these “Chumps”, whom can afford to and want to pay $90k for a half ton truck?! And this isn’t even fully loaded?! Amazing truck, but damn I bet GM cost on this is maybe 50%? No wonder why vehicle manufacturers still set record profits… I used to be able to afford new, before GM dumped their true Military Discount, but now there is no way I can justify that kind of monthly payment 🙄🤢🤮
120k miles on my 2021 3.0 duramax. Great engine.
@@anengineer_ the wet belt that drives the oil pump will go out because it isn't chain drive.
What really sucks with truck prices continuously climbing is how much it’s going to affect the people who actually NEED a truck rather than those who buy them as status symbols. The ones who use them for work or their farm or live in a rural area and need the capability of a truck, are going to be soon priced out of a necessity.
Quit crying. Buy a work truck. Or a used truck. There’s millions of trucks out there.
Yup, this is why we turned to the used market. Picked up a gently used XLT with PB and love the mileage, longer bed and powering accessories with the inverter. However, no way we could even afford our current truck as new. It's nuts.
Keep in mind that the average salary has increased almost 30% over the last 15 years. That means the cost of everything will go up simultaneously. The trucks come with much much more than they did 15 years ago too. Look at what you got with a 2005-2007 truck from any manufacturer. The difference is huge and the cost for sure is too.
@@RCian2000you said it. People are to stupid to realize there’s still brand new 3/4 ton truck’s available for less than $50k
Always enjoy your videos Andre. I have a 2021 GMC Sierra SLT truck with the 3.0 diesel and love it. I bought it used and it’s in perfect condition. I liked so much we bought a 2023 Tahoe with a 3.0 diesel engine. They 23 Tahoe still had the older version engine but both are awesome vehicles. We get high 20’s for mileage and sometimes over 30 It’s got plenty of power to pass and it’s extremely quiet for a diesel. I they GM really did an excellent job pairing it to the 10 speed transmission. I made my decision on buying the vehicles based on your TFL testing. You and Mr. Truck seem to really like the 3.0. Also GM had a issue with gas engines in half ton segment with lifter issues and 8 speed transmission. Thanks Andre for doing alot of videos on trucks to inform the buyers about trucks. I value your opinion and Mr.Trucks. I also value Nathan’s review when he drove the 3.0 distance review in the Yukon
i have a 2023 silverado with this Duramax LZ0 and i get 29 miles on highway and 25 in the city love this engine
My buddy just bought a new AT4 diesel 2500 for $85k out the door. Much better option than the 1500 version as it has a much bigger and proven engine than the medium duty. Better towing and payload.
You don't get an at4x for the towing capability. You get it for the off road capability, and luxury features. At4x has suede headliner, nicer leather on seats with messaging feature, front and rear electronic lockers, multimatic dssv shocks, and the steel bumper. AEV get a few more things on top of that. Its essentially a non-chrome denali ultimate, with a lift and lockers rather than chrome, and street wheels and tires. Im not a chrome fan so i like the AT4X better than denali ultimate. However there are things on both i dont need or want really. No one will build a truck the way you want it. Its all packages that have crap tied together.
@@scottperson9487 I was referring to the AT4X in the video not your buddy.
My new work truck 2023 Silverado HD was $82K out the door. Funny thing is that some half ton trucks in the area were almost as much or more.
@@askmeaboutarcticcatswho's going to take a $90k truck off-roading? Seriously, if they are not a TH-camr or millionaire they are not taking a brand new truck offroading
I have the 2023 AT4 3.0, I get on average 24-26 MPG, that is country driving with a little bit of small city.
Hello, Andre! from Bozeman. Hope you enjoyed your trip! Many of us locals get to drive that canyon on the regular, and it looks like you got the perfect fall day to do it!
Diesel and pickups go hand in hand. Such a shame diesel gate relegated diesel to a niche thing. Kudos to GM for offering the 3.0 Duramax in their 1500 trucks.
The 3.0 is such a cool motor
Wow, this is the first time I'm watching a video as it comes out... Have a safe test drive, my friend. Love your show and all of the different personalities on the videos. When are you going to do some Australian videos off road and equipment... They are coming over here. You need to setup TFL Australian it makes sense... The Banks Family
Incredible rig! But, looks like there is only ~530 miles on the odometer so it’s not broken in yet. Those MPGs could improve still
It’s definitely a nice looking truck. I don’t understand how people afford new trucks. It’s unreal how much vehicles are now. The big 3 are going to price themselves out of the market. Just my opinion
Speaking from experience. People are signing up for $1,200 truck payments like crazy. I don’t get it either.
More and more people are leasing trucks, just because payments are cheaper.
Problem is everyone is raising prices because they people keep paying for them.
How many diesel stations did you pass in 500 miles vs ev charging stations?
Nice video! Payload is disappointing, only 20lbs better than my Gladiator Rubicon.
I live in the area, the first part of his route is easy on mpg, although at elevation, but getting to the resort from the canyon is a 3-4k' steep climb at least.
If Andre was a week later he would've been putting the traction to the test, we got 5-12" and single digits.
Was that at the Montage Resort in Big Sky? If so, definitely a climb up from Belgrade ha ha.
In the 2WD Sierra my father managed to get over 500 miles in a round trip on mostly interstate driving. So, even getting just a hair below that in a 4WD is amazing.
This is the GMC I will buy at some point. Wonderful.
Crazy! I live in Bozeman so nice to know you guys are in the area!
Can you do a video on DEF fluid consumption with the at4x or ZR2 in the 1500 category?
Welcome to Galatin Valley! If you're ever looking for content on a 3' leveled 2022 gmc 2500hd at4 on 37" 13.50 17s and actually take it offroading. Amazing what you can do and fit on these new trucks!
How much does the at4 trim with the bigger tires effect the 6.6 duramax mpg?
great video. Can TFL do pro/con comparison of the 6.2 gas vs the duramax?
Enjoyed the overall introduction evaluation of this pickup. However, I never trust the computer estimate of fuel economy. I wish the standard great TFL method of filling up, and then a roundtrip back with another fill-up was done to get an truly realistic mpg number.
So if towing max weight you better be a small 150lb person with no family or friends and no luggage. Lmao
I have an AT4 with the diesel engine and topper. Average fuel economy is 26 mpg. That's in town, out of town and on the freeway @ 80mph. 31,000 miles on truck. I also have a full size Duramax (2006) both are rock star engines. The 3 liter with 10 speed is excellent combination and have towed with both. 3.0 tows great (6000 lbs max). High marks for that 3.0. I tow 10k to 12k with my 2006 Duramax but find it a rough ride and low mpg for a daily driver.
There was a time 80 mph in a 4x4 pickup truck was insane. Still is if you have to make emergency maneuvers. I have responded to many accidents at that estimated speed. Many fatal. Once you loose traction you are in a 6500 lb odd shaped Boulder bouncing rolling down the road. Many fatalities were still buckled in, but the G-forces generated in the end for end flips can be fatal in themselves. For those that say the seatbelts killed them, the accident where people were thrown clear at those speeds were always fatalities in my 30 years. You would have to search for bodies they would fly that far!! This is on east rolling prairies!! If you are in mountain passes?? Well,,,, stupid is as stupid does.
Obviously it is much safer to drive 75 than 80. In your 30 years probably never have seen a fatality at 75. Stay on the prairies and use your lane assist
I have 2020 GMC Denali 1500 Ultimate trim 22” wheels with 3.0 with 40k miles and get over 650 miles a tank on road trips. Now that is with a 24 gal tank doing 5 over speed limit. And the best mileage at 50 mile intervals was 36.4 miles per gallon through NC where the speed limit was 65mph.
Towing a 1999 accord sedan on a U-Haul car trailer (approximately 5k lbs) I got 17 mpg after 260 miles and towing my GSX-R 1000 on a 5x7 trailer (approximately 1k lbs) I got 22 mpg after 250 miles. I am up and down I95 from FL to VA so flat lands and sea level.
Also I refill my def tank once an oil change (around 7500 miles) usually from truck stops. I have my oil changed at 2-0% with factory oil and filter. I have had samples for last three oil changes analyzed by Blackstone oil testing company and they all showed I still had at lest 1500 miles of oil protection left with engine problem indicator. I will continue to randomly get them checked as she gets more miles on her.
So when you say your gas truck get 600 miles per tank could you include information above so everyone can compare more evenly. Tank size, truck weight, activity and speed actually matters when someone is thinking of what to buy. We are here to help others not our egos.
Example: 600 miles with a 36 gallon tank is approximately 16.7 mpg vs 650 miles from 24 gallons is approximately 27 mpg.
Does that truck have a wait to start when it’s cold ?
Thanks for sharing the payload Andrey. I really like this truck (notwithstanding price), but the payload is the deal killer. It's really at home in that ski resort!
The Trail Boss diesel has a decent payload. You have to learn how to drive with the Eaton Automatic Locking Rear differential, but it’s very effective once you learn the technique.
Hint: don’t learn from Andrey. He is too tentative. Nathan runs off-road well with the set up, Tommy is really smooth in his most recent videos where he has learned driving with it, and Kase is getting there.
Roman & Alex are also not the best to learn from. The big benefit of it is that you learn steady, constant throttle control to keep it engaged and as a result get pretty darn smooth as far as off-road driving goes.
If you can forgive the lack of the e-lockers but want the diesel, the Custom Trail Boss with the 3.0 Duramax is a much more affordable starting platform. GM sells the DSSVs as a direct upgrade kit for the Trail Boss (and AT4) so you can add those to it. Custom TB should have the highest payload of the off road spec trucks (TB, AT4, ZR2 and AT4X) as it has the least amount of equipment on it so to speak (off road bumpers, lighter tires, less interior options). A Custom TB with the 3.0 Duramax starts at $56,635. The DSSVs and rear spring kit through the accessories catalog is $4495. You get the DSSVs, rear springs and will gain 2 inches of front travel and 1 inch rear travel to a stock Trail Boss or AT4. You can always add bumpers and the extra skids and still will come out much cheaper than the AT4X or ZR2 Bison.
It's a trade-off when you add steel bumpers and skid plates. The same thing will happen if you start with a truck with a higher payload and add all of the offroad protection.
@@aevnate4140
It's to low to begin with.
This truck should have 2000+ in payload before the steel is added
I agree...unless u can get a 2k plus payload this is a no go. The powertrain is capable of it but gm doesn't want to offer it due to mpg impacts and cafe
No new trucks in my future……prices are ridiculous
Did you happen to catch fuel econ on the way back to the airport as well? Combined trip would be interesting.
What about the oil consumption problems with this engine? Was that fixed for 2024? Thanks
I'm surprised that you didn't mention the standard size fuel tank is @ 24 US gals. To get anywhere close to 500 miles with that tank capacity is good to see.
Its nice, but any other brand of half ton has a much larger optional tank and so 500 miles is only mediocre. This is doubly true when towing where you can cut that in half or less. I've seen as low as 6.7 mpg towing my travel trailer in my truck, which would probably only be about 8.5 in this thing.
@@Jay-me7gw keep in mind this is a top spec 'off roader'. Given how heavy the truck is compared tp other 1/2 tons, and the big hit in aerodynamics, getting close to 500 miles without towing or hauling on a 24 gal tank is pretty good imo.
I’m so glad I bought my truck when I did, I don’t think I could justify spending that much now.
Okay serious question....who is affording these $80k trucks?! And I'm in the upper-middle class bracket and I can't afford this.
People who have great jobs and don't own homes they live in the truck lol but alot of construction contractors and landscaping company's typically by truck like these for business
What's the range, same truck with the 6.2? As a comparison.
I have a ‘21 3500 z71 4x4 8ft bed crew cab with the 6.6 diesel and if I take it easy and mostly do hwy I can get around 20 mpg and over 700 miles on a tank. But that refill still hurts lol
Can tell this video was recorded more than a week ago, since we just got about 8in of snow. 😂
Txs for another fantastic video..just a thought, any chance You can test mileage with the max payload??most people buy trucks to carry load most times xx
I'm averaging 29.9mpg after 4,800 miles in my 2023 1500 3.0 LTZ.
Wow, ONLY $88,000 + tax + fees + hidden fees from the scammership 😂
We have a Powerboost F150, so lot of payload is consumed by the battery/motor. We get good mileage thanks to it, but our 1538 payload is already lower than we'd like from a ranch truck/daily driver that tows a lot.
South of 1050 for payload is kind of laughable for 1/2 ton.
Wouldn't you get a legit offroader for actually going off road? I feel like if you put 4 burly dudes in the truck it's over payload seems nuts.
I have a 2021 Silverado 1500 4x4 with the 3 liter towing a 4500lb boat 265 miles got 19mpg
I am actually pro diesel , but my question is about the real reliability of GM these day, as I heard many issues with the trucks, what’s your input?
My 2021 Chevrolet 1500 4x4 duramax got better mileage after about 15,000 miles on the odometer. I could get from my house in the Texas panhandle area, to my son's place in south Texas, 512 miles driveway to driveway on one tank of fuel. No gripes from me about the truck. It's been a great truck...
Crazy that tires and a little more weight dropped the truck a good 10mpg
Another great video - Thank you TFL. The 500 or so miles of range is just like the WT that you demonstrated last month, all be it with a less of a payload rating. This pick up looks nice but is not as useful as a truck than the WT shown in the video last month.
I thouggt the kicker speakers in the tailgate was standard on the at4x
Would love to get one of the chevy/GMC trucks in the 3.0 diesel however price of trucks is nuts. Then pending on what state you live in thats another 5,000 to get it on the road with sales tax and then personal property tax.
For reference that drive is 3000 feet of elevation gain. A 6.2 Escalade unloaded usually gets 15-16mpg
That one might be 88K but you can get a nice AT4 with the 3.0 Duramax for about 65 plus / minus. You pay a lot for the multimatics, lockers and some logos IMO. I've seen MPG numbers in the high 20s and almost hitting 30 which really makes it nice.
How was your stay at the montage for $1200-1500 a night?
In Europe we have mostly at least double or triple the US fuel prices so the question for work vehicles doesnt even pose itself. But Diesels are much more powerful
Very cool tailgate but have you ever hauled a bunch of hay consistently, or used a truck for hunting ? Hay and deer blood play havoc on regular truck tailgates. I would think at least a few truck purchasers still work , hunt , and maybe haul a bit of hay weekly like myself.
I have to coment that the ski lodge that was driven too looks very similar to the overlook hotel from the horror movie The Shining 😀
1/2 ton payload on a 1/2 ton truck imagine that.
Anyone knows what happened to the Tesla Truck video?
What campground were you in?
Diesel is the only rational way to go, if one is towing a lot.
I agree, GM has the worst mpg for V8 gas engines. Have a new Tahoe with the 5.3 and it is shit for mpg even with the 10 speed. Comparable Fords or say a 5.7 Hemi in the Wagoneer get better mpg and more HP. Should’ve gotten a diesel!!!!! People say it’s like 10mpg better overall
All depends on what you’re towing in terms of trailer type, size, weight and aerodynamic profile.
Nobody can afford new trucks anymore!
I have a 2023 RST 1500 3.0 I looked at a 2024 RST 1500 with the max tow 4000lbs more towing but the payload was less than the 2023 same truck!
So since you're at altitude, it makes sense that everybody else gets even BETTER mileage. Damn. 20+mpg in a turbodiesel truck is no joke.
I have a Chevy Silverado 1500 3.0 diesel and i love it! Its the best truck i have ever owned. Thank you chevy. O and I get 30 mpg highway.
I really want a Diesel but i worry about the long term viability of it. Many gas stations are either no offering or, or offer dodgy grade of it, and i worry about damage to my engine
I make over double the national average income and I did the math and the max truck I can afford is $20,000. How does anyone pay for a 80k truck? Do honestly people take out mortgages for this?
Does GM make the 3.0 liter Diesel?
Wow GMC Tundra.. grill and everything
There’s like a decent size crack I saw when checking out the e suspension system. Maybe it’s Normal but didn’t look like it. At 3:39
Looks like it’s part of the piece that the lower control arm is connected to
I thought B$ but then I saw it too. Good catch. That looks like a few inches long crack. Andre did a little off-roading between MPG takes. 😃 Now we know why fuel efficiency is only 20 mpg. 😍
News flash…when I fill up my 2019 3.6 ZR2 to its full capability (25 gallons) I can get almost 550 miles on a tank. Smoke that AT4x!
Great video !
Tell me they padded in some negotiating margin into that $88k 🤓
Just take 17% off the MSRP. That is the true dealer cost on average not including bulk incentives.
What is the tow rating on this truck
Idk to me 20mpg, low payload and tow capacity isn't worth the extra 1.00$ per gallon cost of fuel plus def. I got that on my trailboss 5.3 with 20speed. And my new tundra. Good video none the less and definitely q beautiful truck.
why did they quiet making the 2.8 i dont believe i herd why. thank you preston
I drive a 2023 AT4 with the 3.0 Duramax. My best 50 mile Avg. MPG is 40.3 traveling from Vancouver to Kennewick, WA (with wind in my favor). Best 450 mile Avg. MPG is 29.7. I'm almost always over 22 mpg with mostly rural & city driving and some highway. I'm pretty happy with it.
Once upon a time I had a 2015 ecod w 4 in lift, 35" tires and would average 27 mpg at 75 mph w gde tune.. 29 mpg ain't too shabby!
Hard to believe my 4-cly Colorado with a 6-spd has 400 lbs more payload.
Make sure it has cruise control!
Another thing i dont get is, why didnt they relocate the shocks to the outside like the Colorado???
It probably just comes down to space. Just don't forget the shocks are tunned to be in that location. If the shocks were moved to the outside of the springs they would not have to work as hard and would be tunned differently.
We bought a 2023 Sierra SLT X31 4 wheel drive with the 3.0liter Duramax this past June. We just took it on a road trip from Fort Worth out to Big Bend National Park. The trip computer said that over 1500 miles we averaged 27mpg. That mileage included highway speeds as well as park speeds on flat roads as well as some climbing and descending in the Chisos Mountains. At that MPG, the range of the truck is over 600 miles. Driving in our small town and on highways to and in the Metroplex, I can get an average of 26mpg. This engine, is so quiet, torquey, and mated to the 10 speed transmission, it shifts quickly and effortlessly. Since we don’t tow, I have noted no excessive oil consumption and the 5 gallon DEF tank lasts about 5000 miles. It is a great vehicle for our needs.
At 3:45 look at the frame above and to the left of bolt holding the arm on, that FRAME IS TORE!
I would expect around 25 mpg running empty after break in. If not this seems like a poor choice.
My 23 High Country has overall averaged 26.4 since new. The AT4X/ ZR2 will get slightly less due to ride height and more aggressive tires.
Just based on the MPG's I see reported on the Duramax groups when people do a level and tires, I think the average would be lower than 25.
My 2020 ram rebel 1500 hemi, on the highway I average 21 at 65mph and get a good 650 miles on a tank. Anything over 75mph drops to about 19mpg on the highway and still gets a bit over 600 miles on a tank. Love my ram.

There not producing and more internal combustion engines in a few years get them while you still can lol
That really sucks for mileage. I just took my F150 4X4 Powerstroke across country to Reno and back 4400mi. Towing a 5X8 trailer loaded, bed loaded and two occupants at that mileage!
These prices on most new vehicles, is out of control. People just have to stop buying these expensive vehicles and the manufactures will have to bring cost down. I hope? Then you also are paying diesel fuel prices. Unless your towing small excavators etc. Oh wait, most people drive these trucks as status symbols these days.
It's 40,000 more than it should be.
The only thing that worries me about this engine is the belt driven oil pump don't know how long it will last .
I wonder how much these trucks would cost if they didn’t pay TH-camrs to fly out and stay in luxury resorts and have nothing bad to say about their products…..
We own a Tahoe with the 3.0 diesel. It is a great drive. peppy and quiet. 27 mpg hiway, 25 combined. Not a big tower, don’t want it for that. Would love it if gm would put this engine back in the Colorado. My friends get over 40 mpg with that configuration.
This engine was never in the Colorado. That was a 2.8 litre inline 4 cylinder turbo diesel vs this being a 3.0 litre inline 6 cylinder turbo diesel. Very different.
Is it expensive having to fill up every time since diesel prices are outrageous or what? I want a diesel vehicle some day.
I’ve got a 2022 Silverado. Just took a trip to Florida from Texas and back. Averaged 27 mpg and was getting 640-650 miles to the tank. Love this truck
