Lines and circles - simple and brilliant! I would say elegant, but the way you control and fire attacks might be too brutal for "elegant." haha. Another good one, Brother! thank you!

    Much love from Australia....I've been so inspired by your videos. I'm now 38 years old, and re-starting mixed martial arts. Your fighting style reminds me a lot of Zendo Kai Karate (created by Bob Jane) which I learnt 20 years ago. It was a mismatch of BJJ, Karate, and Mu Thai. Its sole purpose was to maim the enemy in the shortest and effective way possible in a street situation. I remember training to defend against those wild hooks, to close the distance, use a judo sweep and then finish on the ground with submission. Would love to visit your school one day.

    • @rednas2.079
      @rednas2.079 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yup, that's what sparring is for. Getting used to all the factors of a (controlled) fight in a controlled environment.
      So not only do you learn to implement all the different techniques you learn in an actual combat situation, but you also get to experience all the different ways your body can react to a fight.
      Though it's important to remember that the controlled environment of a dojo is way different than a streetfight, it will help you learn to control your mind and your body to get ready for any fight.

    Gold. I can't hit with any part of my hands anymore, but I can hit while blocking with a cane and kerambit or a Cold Steel pocket sword. I have to protect my damaged hands and wrists, but I am learning and then improvising. For now I practice in the forest each day. I have plenty of serious fight experience unfortunately. It's been awhile since anybody tried to kill me. Certainly hope so anyway. I'm really digging what I am realizing as I learn, and modify my cane primary cane. I will have a tactical pen also and a fan and other ostensibly not weapons to choose from to rig myself accordingly legal. My cane has lots of rope cord work and is sailor art, which I was a sailor. It's all badass useful for foraging mushrooms and berries, to fighting most particularly. It really provides great as a all terrain mobility device, with the custom grip stations and a blocking grip strap. I spend many hours using the unique grips in all types of terrain daily. I beat it into trees for practice for hours, because I tied on lightweight cord armor which is drawn hard with spikes. It can rake rip bark off tree's. It's so badass I can't believe I still use it everyday and modify it after 6 months, when I got others of several types, but this Oak Tractor Supply US Whip Cane is badass tough when the armor is reapplied as it's destroyed. It's all individually field replaceable pieces and losing one or even three non contiguous should not sustain immediate damage. Even a cracked cane is still fight able and can help limp off afterwards without notice of it's condition using my system of knots. Mine has been cracked for awhile. Someday I'll strip all the worn lower armor and repair it. Hahaha! I been practicing in the pale moonlight as the leaves have mostly fallen and I do not take a light with me. I can see my shadow and do astronomy as I practice. I am experienced at Celestial Navigation. My dog killed a big rabbit and ate it. I'm hurt all over and always in pain. The Cain is awesome for me, as it is a natural progression of my arts by which I have often lived rather than die. I learn so much from you, and very much enjoy it, thank you all.

    Great video. I notice in defence your arms are very close to your head or body. This contrasts with traditional Wing Chun positions such as Tan Sau and Jum Sau, which project out a little more. Would you mind explaining what you have found to be the advantages and disadvantages of the closer style, which looks a little like a Wing Chun - Boxing hybrid defence. Many thanks for the interesting and thought provoking videos.

    • @fightscience
      @fightscience  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Good question. Taan creates too much space between your arms and your body. It also requires you close the distance much faster. Especially if you wish to punch simultaneously. This requires an exceptional level of skill for the average person. Instead I've been teaching the concept of covering up and then climbing to stick to the arms. Let's not forget the we elbow more effectively at close range in Wing Chun. I discuss this briefly in th-cam.com/video/kAVFQ_suDys/w-d-xo.html. Also see th-cam.com/video/4z4icT4wRSk/w-d-xo.html.
      Hope this helps you.

    I'm disabled with back pain (among other things, but it's the back that pertains to my question) so I can't really grapple or kick safely anymore save for defensive low kicks and the occasional limb grab/joint manipulation or the odd leg sweep here and there, so I've been focusing on hand strikes predominantly as I have a hard time using my knees, although I do throw some elbow strikes here and there as well.
    While I've been taking techniques and ques from Boxing (I won't be able to train in it until I move as there is an MMA gym that also offers Boxing classes in that area.) and although I really like it and I hope to train in it properly and in full soon, I find that sometimes the hooks and the slipping of punches can be a bit tricky pain-wise.
    I've been thinking of adding some elements of Wing Chun to my striking, and I'm curious to know whether or not that would be an advisable combination. I've done some Wing Chun in the past, but took very little from it because I had a poor and inattentive teacher. Also there are no Wing Chun schools where I'm headed, so would it be worth it to learn a little more Wing Chun on my own considering my limitations due to my disability, or should I focus solely on Boxing?
    Thanks so much for everyone's time and expertise for those who can provide some insight. :)

    Excellent drill you are showing here. I have to say that I greatly admire your knowledge and expert application using Wing Chun as a starting point. Being an older Martial artist since 1971, I have had the opportunity to watch the martial arts world change so much since the "Golden age" of Bruce Lee in, "Fist of Fury (Big Boss)." I like the fact you break real world down to a great understanding in practical terms. Ive had a varied background in a few methods, including boxing and wrestling. Was doing BJJ for 2 years but began to have trouble with my hips so it greatly reduced my training in that area. So my question for you is, since you stated that you should have good stand-up and ground, what would be ideal for someone such as myself? I know that this question, and the fact I cannot speak with you directly, may hinder an exact answer. But any good advise is most helpful for this ole Texas man. Will continue viewing your videos on a regular basis. Thanks so much, and keep up the good work!

    • @fightscience
      @fightscience  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Firstly thanks for following our videos Jim, it's much appreciated. Shame about your BJJ experience. Have you tried another school or even changing your game? Your hips will give you a lot of trouble if you try to maintain your guard at the wrong time. It's very common in the early stages of training (I suffer with the same problem). Hence my thoughts on changing your game. The reason for suggesting changing schools, was perhaps it may be more helpful to find a BJJ school that focuses more on Self Defence, even grappling and striking. Strangely, this will be kinder on your body compared to a competitive team. In my opinion BJJ (if you can find a good team) is great for older grapplers and offers a good grounding for self defence (on the ground). Hope that helps you. Let me know how you get on. Greetings from London.

    • @jimlowe5433
      @jimlowe5433 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fightscience Thank you for taking the time to reply. I will definitely see about changing my game. Always had a place in my heart for the "Toss and Tumble" of ground, as well as, the stand up engagement of fighting. But I know that will not have full attention as I did at one time. Your observation of maintaining the guard, indeed, was foremost in my training from more of the "Down on the knees" position. Plus I spent a great deal of years working on the heavy bag with many many reps of kicks. Not so much for that anymore. Thinking since I am more mindful of self defense, and not competition anymore, that I have started shaping that in place now. Still want to include grappling to be well-rounded. Again, Thanks so much!

      Of courses boxing skills can be used in a street fight 90% or more of ppl throw hands on the streets when fighting, if your decent or good with you’re fists and/or have boxing experience you can light someone up so fast that the fight can be over before you take any damage,yeah there’s a difference between fighting on the street then in the ring obviously but just because someone is a boxer ppl automatically think that’s all they’ll do if In a street fight, yea it’s automatic to throw your hands if trained or not, but anything goes on the streets,

    • @williambolger3877
      @williambolger3877 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply what I was thinking was more a boxer vs a street fighter would the boxers discipline and picking out his punches against a street fighter of corse instinct would kick in for the boxer and it would turn into a street fight but I’d like to see a boxer take on a street haymaker thrower and see how it goes

    • @fightscience
      @fightscience  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually this is a really good question. I found when I boxed I took more risks against when fighting bare knuckled. Basically, I got used to using the gloves to absorb punches even cover up my spaces. I also was happier to trade when wearing gloves. Which you can't do bare knuckled in the street. Let's not add the risk of damaging your hands when punching.
      Now I'm not suggesting boxing doesn't work in street fighting. Of course it does, you just have to manage the risk of injury better. It's a trade off between excellent striking/mobility and injury.
      Personally I think grappling and striking are a better combination for self defence in the street. Hope that helps you.

    Advanced training, always try to stay away and counterstrike if possible. Hard frontkicks to their legs may give you an opportunity to run.. These are large trained men that can mix it up on the inside. At least try to stay away and leg kick first, then this method works, but I prefer Mui Thi on the inside, knees and elbows while continuing to try to strike the legs and escape.

    When you're being barraged with punches, you don't have time to be concerned with the straight and circular. Shouldn't you try to block BOTH his arms with yours, flicking your forearms outward as you move inside, and then launching your own barrage? Or, just avoiding him altogether by moving and leaning back as you turn at right angles?

    I like what your showing but if your on the inside shouldn't really be worried about blocking palm strike in an upward forward movement to chin completely destroys the opponents core. I think both techniques have merit and work but I prefer attacking while defending not defending then attacking.

    • @fightscience
      @fightscience  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good point and that's my preference as well. Although I think the average person is relatively unskilled. At this drill there is less of a margin for error. It's much more of a complex skill to attack while defending.

    i don't understand how the concept of punching back as you did at many stages including 0:05 would work, becuase wouldnt the person just continue hitting once you let go of the arms, your video th-cam.com/video/lG-kmqq3LyE/w-d-xo.html made more sense because you were very close to him and were talking about controlling him but with this one, i don't understand how this one would work because you say get in and control the arms and then fire back with punches but then the other person would fire back? still a great video just curious, thanks!

    I think this is great against a punch but if someone pulls a a knife unexpectedly you're to close.

    • @fightscience
      @fightscience  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wr discuss this often. You can fact this in by adding a weapon draw to the drill.

    • @kellyadlington6488
      @kellyadlington6488 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you saying that once a knife is added to the drill, you then improvise from there?

    • @fightscience
      @fightscience  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kellyadlington6488 yes. We do a similar drill. Where we hand fight from an inside position. As shown in the video. The bad guy fights (punches, grabs, knees etc) then draws weapons from concealment during the action. It's an extension to this drill for weapon escalation (I.e. weapon draws). I hope this makes sense.
