    The government has created this obsession with race identification. Why should I have to include what race I am when I take a test or when I apply for a job? It's insane how a little melanin and change someone's perception of you

      MsCandacee but the general public is worse then the government because they buy into that BS through there own freewill they think that they are there race and forgetting that they are a individual, they have a attachment with there race which is stupid because the only valid attachment that anyone should have is that they are a individual, they should have a individual identification instead of a race identification

      True, it's interesting how the idea of race and group identity has become stronger and normalised especially after 2015 or so. This video was done in 2013 and you can tell even people thought differently then, that it should be about individuals and not race necessarily

      yeah i think that whole thing is a double edged sword too, cuz it suggests exactly what you're saying here, associating "good" with "white," but also I think it serves to denigrate black vernacular english as less than and improper and "bad", you know? it's really twisted.

    • @sandyg.8108
      @sandyg.8108 11 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      whatsername wow I really agree! I have been told I talk and act white as a back-handed compliment. I never knew why black (or whatever mainstream thinks is black/blackness) is essentially bad. With 40 million black people in the United States we're all going to talk differently and all those variations are not better than the other. I do not think all races speak English "exactly" the same if not we would sound like robots. But I hated when people associated any aspect of "blackness" with bad or inferior. I think all of us individuals have something to celebrate about ourselves. We should stop trying to categorize or associate a value to one another's qualities. Instead let's celebrate them all.

      Or having the ability to code switch when it is called for...I find it depressing that folks disparage the use of dialect or cultural significations and reify standard American English as if it were some sign of intelligence. Go to England where the language originated and you will find lots of divergence from Received Standard BBC English. And even more prejudice about the class of the speaker almost as much as the prejudice about their ethnic racial background.

      TheDMarie82 i refuse to accept to have "white people" as a reference for any kind of comparison. Right about time to put a stop sign to that shit. I'm black, so are the majority of my ancestors. newsflash, there's no way i could "sound" or "look" like a white person. I sound and am a bunch of stuff i've been living throughout these 33 years, and albeit living and being influenced by the so called western "civilization", i'm not a white person and don't intend to be. My roots are down there, back where i come from. Africa.

      I know and I’m so tired of it. I have long hair and I am black. I get told I talk like a white person, I ACT like a white person, I would most likely only date white boys, or I try hard to act white and I’ve had enough. I’m tired of MY race being considered “bad” as if it’s wrong to be black. The stereotypes, the names, the comments that I get at school are disgusting and so upsetting! People call me the “good kind of black” I’m so sick of it! I was in love with this boy and he was not white nor black, today he said something that broke my heart and started to make HATE myself and blame myself for being black as if it’s MY FAULT, but boy aren’t I an idiot. Love will make you do and think of some fucked up shit. He said he only dates white girls, hooks up with black girls occasionally, but only the good black girls and then he said my name because I’m considered the “good black”. It broke my heart and I’ve been crying and pissed off over and over all throughout the day. Why must the stereotypes make others view me as loud or “ghetto” and even if that were me, why would it be so wrong? Im just awfully upset right now and disappointed.

    I honestly don't understand how the producers of this show plan out their shooting schedule. They plan out maybe 40-60 min. with each interview subject spread across countless conversation topics, and somehow the director/editors make each episode seem natural. Crazy amount of hard work

    I never "realized" I was black until I came to the US. If there's one thing I don't understand about this country, it's its infatuation with race, and by country I mean the people living in it. I pity the fact that I am a race here before being a person.

    Talking white never meant nor does it mean that you sound educated or have good diction. It simply means you talk like a white person in tone, I have known several people that "talk white" and were dumb as a box of rocks, simply their tone sounded like that of a white person. Black people, in general, have shorter and thicker vocal chords hence we sound a certain way a lot of the times. Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, Marc Lamont HIll, Professor Cornell West, etc. All speak very eloquently with great diction and a vast vocabulary BUT they don't "talk white" by any standard of that phrase.

    • @IBBMS
      @IBBMS 11 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ***** I know it irritates me, like umm no that's not what I meant because actually you use very childish diction lol just if I were on the phone with you I'd think you were a white woman by your tone of voice

    • @Mf7d89
      @Mf7d89 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with the vocal tone, but speaking well or "white" as a black person especially during my parents age has always gotten you those types of negative remarks from outsiders and those in our own community.

      Thankyou people try so hard to be politicly correct acting like they can't tell when they're talking to a white or black person over the phone. Black people tend to have a little more bass in the voice. Men and women.

    • @IBBMS
      @IBBMS 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Like I JUST said, saying you don't sound black has nothing to do with how articulate you are or aren't, it has to do with your cadence and the sound of your voice.

      bree redbone conquer: overcome or take control of people or a place by military force.
      Doesn't state that it has to be a fair fight. European Imperialism wasn't a fair fight at all. The only time a fight should be equal is if it is for sport.

    Neat video clip! I am mixed race in Canada, which is very diverse. We were raised to not factored race into someone's persona. That being said, I struggled to find my own racial identity. Like, I could treat people with an open mind but thought they should pin me down into a specific category, although I am both black and white. When people ask my nationality, I'd say, black and get, "oh you're black! So act it." When I didn't really know how? After coming into my own and realizing how stupid that is, I was able to truly find myself and to care less about what people might expect. Sure, I hear a lot of, "you speak white" or believe it or not, "you dress white" because I dress like a hipster... which is dumb. But I am me. Yes I am proud of my background and I honor my history and ancestors, and if you ask I will tell you, but I am not burdened by it. My race is only a minor detail in who I am. It, alone, does not define me. Love this video!

    I actually believe (perhaps falsely, I'm sure you'll let me know) that the USA isn't as racist as many parts of the world. The fact that we DO put race relations in the forefront helps the conversation so much. The tension, the slights (real and perceived), ultimately serves to increase communication and I believe the next generation of Americans will continue to be better than the last.

  • @ghost245353

    As Americans, we need to stop asking "what are you?" in response to ethnic identity. If you were born and raised in America, then you are American regardless of your background. We need to start asking "what is your heritage?" to people who are American. Having your father being born in Ireland and having your mother being born in Japan and having yourself being born in America does not make you "half Irish and half Japansese." It makes you an American with Irish and Japanese heritage.

    • @ghost245353

    • @DanieEdge
      @DanieEdge 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because there have been way too many past and current injustices and issues based on people's race and ethnicity. And race and ethnicity is something we cannot change about ourselves so I think it feels more personal. Just like comments about people's body type and size, it's something that cuts to the quick and everyone has their guilt or insecurities about it.

    Oh fucking please. I'm tired of modern day America with all this "if you're not black you white" "if your not white, you're black" shit. I'm only 24, and I remember a time when it was obvious that you were black or if you were white. We treat the world like we only have black and white people and in between there's everyone else and they must choose a side. As if black people and white people are the main people on this planet and everyone else is just something else. I'm black, identify is black. I don't go back ten generations and find someone and say that I'm black and that other race, when you can't even fucking see it. I have no immediate white, native, etc in my family. So I just go as black, and I'm cool with that. People like that make me feel like it is becoming increasingly bad to identify as just black, as if it's a shame now. And a lot of people need to know what the hell the difference between nationality, race, and ethnicity is. Because that one dumb ass white girl called American a race, which is not. And even when you get down to it, calling someone a "native American" is pretty fucked up too when you realize that America is named after a European explorer. Like, what the hell did Native "Americans" consider this land before the Spanish, British, Dutch, and other European countries came here and did their little number on the people who were here before them? Eh, ever wonder that?
    Stop trying to put people in stupid binary fucking boxes.

    I work in retail and deal with many different types of people daily. Most stereotypes are based on some truth. Theyre not random things people make up. They may not apply to ALL people of this race, but they apply to enough people that it becomes a well known stereotype.

  • @itsmetheinterrupter
    @itsmetheinterrupter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I just hate it when people ask "why does it all have to be about races?"
    I mean, where have you been living in the last, say, 450 years? Not literally, historically, mind you. Are you even aware? Do you somehow care? Can you at least relate?
    If not, that's probably the reason why you don' understand why it "ALWAYS" has to be about race. not only, though. Minorities did not ask to be oppressed, we've been trying hard to fight and to resist to this bitter system. So, Stop asking us why do we bring up and talk about issues that are a part of us and of our everyday struggle. We di it in order to survive.
    Don't try to silence us with your "oh, why do people have to take it so seriously, it's just a joke, y'all".
    Nah, no more joking. Shit is going down. This is about oppression, it's about race, and it's a fucking serious matter.
    now get over it, and get with the program.

      I don't think she was trying to being disrespectful, just that we came over 'and conquered' them...not a nice term, but in a way, accurate. I think she was indicating that it happened, but that she, or people aren't proud of it. I *think* she was also saying that we integrated with them to some extent, so lot's of us 'whites', aren't as 'white' as we think. Agree???

    • @Brandonmslau
      @Brandonmslau 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No I don't agree. This girl said we conquered native americans as if it were a an accomplishment. Like they did anything to the Europeans to deserve a mass genocide, rape, and the intended destruction of their way of life/culture. That is more than just "conquering" a nation. The hate towards natives still exists more than you think. I think it was a privileged comment, and she was just trying to sound "enlightened" about the subject because she made no point. What is white? I think we all know what "white" is. Yes a lot of people have multicultural backgrounds but at the end of the day most people have a particular racial identity that they cling to. I am african, welsh, and native, but I am BLACK. That is my racial identity, I HAVE a multicultural background but still BLACK.

    What I don't get is the whole 'colour' aspect. I see Canadian's, US citizens, and so on. Like what that man said about we aren't pure anything anymore. We all have a little something in them.

    As a white person, I feel stereotyped in an unfair way. No one called me pretty in high school except for this one African American girl. Something wrong with my tongue. I have a lisp and my teeth hurts my tongue. I am 49 % Ashkenazi Jew.

    The Asian guy is pretty hot!~
    Haha I come from Singapore [actually a mixed country but most don't know],
    and foreigners always can't put a finger on what race I am.
    I guess as long as it's not overdone, racial identity can be quite fun~ :)

    I believe, for a significant and constructive dialogue on the issue of "race" to take place, we must examine the idea at the most basic level: we have to first acknowledge that the fundamental concepts of "racial identity" are poorly-constructed, arbitrarily-defined, highly-subjective relationships of differences we have placed upon one another. Without realizing the logical pitfalls that come with discussions of "race", most dialogue on the issue is futile.

    Color 1st, ethicity 2nd in this country. For all of Giselle's brazilian beauty, she is still white just as for all of Saldana's latina loveliness she is still black and will be treated as such. Status. I could break it all the way down...

    Can we all agree that when we see a ant we say we saw an ant. Rarely do we specify it by its genus. But the truth is that there are thousands of species of ants. However when we see a human we automatically verify their origin based on their outward appearance. It is how we make scents of our environment. It only becomes racist when we have the economic means to affect a race on a larger level. This is why white skinned people are many times unfairly labeled as racist. However history shows that white skinned people have concurred , through force, and religion.

    This is a really touchy subject, and the best thing to do is to avoid it if possible.
    I never talk about something like this until i've known the person for awhile, mainly because you never know how the person will react. I don't really care about this on the individual level, but as a whole it's quite important to understand that when speaking about race on a mass scale, the term race really means socio-economic standing.
    In the U.S this has always been the case, from the Irish up to Mexicans today.

    I used have light hair that is now confused as black hair. I found out that I descended from a Native American woman who was from Vermont. I identify as white. My DNA says half Ashkenazim, French and English. My great grandmother had an Irish last name. I guess that is why I am so fair. Now that my hair is very dark, I am not sure. My eyes are dark. My brother is the stereotypical Irish looking person. Cause I am glad this video is not putting people down. Being mixed, a family member would put another part of me down. My dad put my Irish side down. But my friends are Irish descent and really successful. I would not be surprised if anyone would think that I am from Germany, but I am not

    Our evolutionary ancestors were often called to act fast, on partial information from a small sample, in novel or risky situations. Under those conditions, the ability to form a better-than-chance prediction is an advantage. Our brain constructs general categories from which it derives predictions about category-relevant specific, and novel, situations. That trick has served us well enough to be selected into our brain’s basic repertoire.
