      I agree that it is wrong to film people secretly, especially if it's in private matters. But Hogan did know about the tapes, and so did his best friend, the man who filmed it. Should a billionaire be able to shut down voices he dislikes? Even if we agree that Gawker is a horrid publication (and it's certainly not squeaky clean), the principle, surely, remains the same.

    • @MissWashhoban
      @MissWashhoban 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      So if someone posts a sex tape of your daughter without her consent in order to make profit, you think she should just shut up and have no recourse as long as it is a "news" publication? After all she knew it existed right?

    • @jamieburke2549
      @jamieburke2549 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My daughter would deserve the full protection of the law. So does Hulk. The problem is that Peter Thiel funds the case, in order to shut down a publication he personally dislikes. The issue is the control of media by the powerful, whether those powerful people have good intentions or not.

    • @MissWashhoban
      @MissWashhoban 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Got it, so your daughter has rights to the protection of law, but it is not okay if you financially help her with the legal bills, or for her to be financially compensated for damages, or impose anything that would stop the "news organization" from violating the rights to others in the future because its a slippery slope..so aka any organization claiming to be news can print anything they want about anyone without any accountability...nice...

    • @jamieburke2549
      @jamieburke2549 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No thats not what i mean. But I appreciate that I haven't expressed myself clearly. The taking of anybody's sex tape without their permission is a crime. It is a crime if the person is a celebrity or not. The issue in this case is that Peter Thiel took funded the Hogan case in order to get rid of a media organisation he doesn't like. This is not philanthropic. This is a incredibly powerful person taking out one of his critics. The Hulk hogan case should be no business of Peter Thiels.
      This is a growing problem where I am from, Ireland. Wealthy business interests cynically using the court system for personal gain.
      It could be argued that Hulk Hogan had a legitimate grievance (although i don't think he was really 'hurt' that much.)

    Most importantly, I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible ... The 1920s were the last decade in American history during which one could be genuinely optimistic about politics. Since 1920, the vast increase in welfare beneficiaries and the extension of the franchise to women - two constituencies that are notoriously tough for libertarians - have rendered the notion of "capitalist democracy" into an oxymoron.[77]

    This case should not just be illustrative of the definitions and dictations of journalism with respect to privacy and ‘love life’. It should be indicative of the idea that a billionaire or a third party can fund behind doors and through little transparency a legal case to sway its outcome. In other words, the idea that private third party back-end funding determines legal outcomes.

      @@fernsader9261 I've worked with journalists for a long time - some of them are great, others are terrible (just like the rest of us :)). But I believe the press is an essential institution for any civilized, democratic nation, and I think billionaires destroying a publication out of spite/revenge is a scary thing. And maybe what's even scarier it's seing so many people being happy about this - I bet many of them are normally defending freedom of speech (but just for those they agree with). Of course journalists should be held accountable and sanctioned when they are in the wrong, but complete annihilation is a different thing. In some parts of the world they arrest and even kill journalists (and I'm in Europe, close to one of these parts of the world - Russia), in others rich people sue or buy the publication - but the result is the same.

      Admiration isn't a word that comes to mind when I think of Thiel. Personally, I'm a fan of America and democracy. Peter Thiel hasn't had a problem with the system that helped facilitate his rise to the top until it was no longer compatible with his worst excesses. Thiel is smart and has his finger on the pulse of the world - he's also petty, frighteningly vindictive and, to put it bluntly, a villain, using his vast wealth to subvert American democracy in favor of a system for the billionaires and only the billionaires.
