Another excellent video. I’m so pleased to have found your channel. Thank you for your efforts. You made a comment about keeping Wally Wood’s “22 Panels That Always Work” away from your students. To me, that is a massive mistake. Should they get them on day one, probably not, but they should get them early in their education with a class discussion about what they are, what they mean and how to most effectively use them. Will the students use them as crutches? Yes, some will. Will others apply them poorly and gratuitously, yes, of course, that’s what is done when discovering something new. And, the response to all of that is, so what. It is better to learn by doing, even if the doing yields poor results. Bad work is the norm in the early days of learning anything, so why withhold a useful tool and way to think about visual storytelling? They aren’t fighting fires, they aren’t saving lives. They are putting pen to paper. Let the mistakes happen.

So pleased you found and like the channel.
I've shown the 22 Panels page to some students now, but to 3rd and 4th year students - not too early. I get what your saying, but I'd rather they learn from their own mistakes, than have to unlearn someone else's. For instance, it would've saved me years not to have to undo bad habits picked up from Burne Hogarth anatomy books.
Plus, the Wood/Hama page specifically refers to how to make graphically interesting talking heads scripts from other writers. Most of our students are writing their own stuff. I'd rather encourage them to find their own voice and develop their own storytelling style and word/picture balance.

Another great conversation. I was especially intrigued by the conversation of the state of the industry and the idea there are several comics industries right now. There are definitely different markets, and each is developing an industry to service it, but there is still some cross-over in terms of creative talent between those markets. But whenever I hear someone say "comics are dying" my response is always, "No, they are evolving, and they have been continually evolving since their inception in the 1930s. Formats, markets, styles, characters, genres have all come and gone, but comics, i.e. the use of words and pictures arranged in panels and pages to tell stories, have endured and always will. They way they get created or brought to market may change, but comics evolve. Comics endure.

I'm with you that Comics, as a medium, are here to stay. This reminds me of what I was told by Larry Marder (Beanworld, longtime MacFarlane Toys CEO) in the early '90s, that as long as there were people wanted to make comics, and people who wanted to read comics, someone or something would provide a conduit between the two. Nowadays, online, that middleman can even be negated.
Some of the current segments of the larger industry are markets, but some can be identified industries, in and of themselves, I think, and exist apart from other segments. We have: Direct Market; bookstores; Webcomics; online sales; various types of crowdfunding; Zines, etc. There is some crossover in these, with creators, and with readership and events. Some creators can make their own corner, and do fine and be happy enough, paying no attention at all to the Direct Market. Different awards and events service particular segments, leaning one way or another. Manga, Pilkey and Telgemeir almost seem like their own industries. :D Then we have increasing via schools and sales to libraries. There's a lot going on, lots of changes afoot.
When I'm teaching or speaking with Comics majors at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design, I stress one has a lot of options (certainly more then I had when I broke in) and creators can find their own path, directed by interests or ambitions, and how one wants to balance Creative Life and Finances.
I'm making choices of those options with my upcoming project, myself. We'll see how it all pans out...
