    Thanks for posting your conversion video to my p-64 review. Every shot I fired in that video was using winchester 9x19mm brass that had been sized, trimmed and converted to 9x18mm makarov using your method.

  • @ammosmith
    @ammosmith  15 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I use a .35" pilot for initial trimming. However you can use the Lee trimmer (cartridge specific to the 9x18) as long as you DO NOT FL resize after running the Parabellum through the flairing die. Once you trim then FL resize and reflair for bullet seating.

    This is fantastic information! I love how easy this is to do with the most common range brass you can find, plus 9x19 casings are thicker. I have a set of 9x18 Makarov dies and will be trying this soon, so I have my skills and an abundance of ammo stockpiled for Civil War II.

    I try to use nickle plated brass to keep it visibly different than the 9x19mm stuff.

    I haven't reloaded yet, and I have a .30 Carbine Blackhawk that I should reload for, now I have another reason to reload, making nice Makarov rounds for my East German Makarov. Thanks, you make this look easier than I thought it was.

  • @ammosmith
    @ammosmith  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Try the Lee case trimmer. It's cheap and easy to use. Remember to run the 9mm NATO through the 9x18 expander die before you trimotherwise it will not fit on the trimmer pilot.

  • @ammosmith
    @ammosmith  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    The brass comes off in little ribbons and the steel rounds are caliber specific mandrels.

    I watched this video and your other video of Basic reloading trimming pistol brass. I bought the Lee Makarov 9x18 trim length Gage and do the whole thing on my hand drill like you show on your videos. It works great!

  • @ammosmith
    @ammosmith  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    They make a barrel for the Makarov in .380. This conversion if for those who prefer the 9x18 or who already have. Ammo is getting more expensive and a lot of people are turning to reloading/handloading to offset costs and availability.

  • @m1garand1959
    @m1garand1959 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought that too but it didnt happen to me i believe the strength of those little 9mm cases coupled with the lower pressure load makes it unlikely to rupture the case.

  • @ThugRandles
    @ThugRandles 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video- this is my understanding:
    #1: Neck expanding die - gets rid of Luger's taper at the neck
    #2: Full length sizing die - expands Luger to Mak diameter across the whole case (What's the bump you're not putting on? 2:35) + deprimes
    #3: Lathe - shorten 19mm to 18mm
    #4: Deburring
    #5: Priming (hand tool?)
    Do I need to re-flare at this point? Or is the case flared still from step 2?
    #6: Measure powder (vol. powder charger)
    #7: Seat bullet (seating die)
    Am I missing anything?

  • @ammosmith
    @ammosmith  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Run the case through the expander die then trim. Size the case as your last step. This should take care of the problem.

  • @ammosmith
    @ammosmith  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's also wider at the base. The 9x19 operates at about 32,000psi and the 380 at about 25000psi

  • @ammosmith
    @ammosmith  16 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The 9x18 is a neat little cartridge. It is very similar in performance to the German 9mm Ultra. With ammunition costs and availability being of real concern, being able to make a cartridge is very valuable.

    @NowCryHavoc Fair enough. An AK on the other hand is designed to work no matter what. It may have even been designed for steel cased ammo. Rough and rugged is a common design parameter for the Russians. For the Czech made CZ 82 though, I have to differ.

  • @Swagman00
    @Swagman00 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @1979rdg The whole problem is finding brass cased 9x18. Sure you can use steel case, one time use 9x18 Wolf or Ulynosk but why? Brass case ammo will always trump steel in accuracy, wildcat rounds and cost (long run).

My current pistol is a P-64 that takes the 9x18 you're talking about in this vid. How would you bottleneck, or neck down, a pistol case? Lately, I've become very intrigued by some of Gary Reeder's wildcat cartridges and have the dies for them and the parent case. Specifically I'd be interested in converting a .454 Casull case into a .410 GNR.

I have worked up loads for my CZ-82 that chronograph at 1125 fps which brings the load up to +P standards which seems safe in my CZ-82 which is all steel. Do Not use anything this Hot in the Aluminum frame FEG 63 EVER! I use Accurate Arms #5 Powder and worked up .1 grain at a time shooting 10 Rounds at each step up. GO SLOW!

    I am having some trouble with this. My bullets are .365 dia., and when I seat them, they "bulge out" the case badly. I corrected the problem by sanding (@ 3/4") of a 3/8" dowelrod to a close .365". I put a handle on it, and now I tap it into the cases to insure I have a straight wall. They finish product seems to be much better. I am using Lee Dies, and I have no idea why they are NOT removing the entire taper????Paul

      9mm is .355 ?!?! ....usually, "Yes ,,,,BUT, "Not for Russian 9x18 mm Makarov.... The Russians "had to be different" to Germany and the rest of the world when they made this cartridge... so, they made it a unique length and bullet diameter....for reasons that we "outside Russia" may never fully understand. It might have something to do with the "straight blowback/fixed barrel" design that most or all pistols in this caliber share.

    • @manuelmuelller3535
      @manuelmuelller3535 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      J Martin I'm pretty sure they made their own cartridge specifically to be different. Looking at the time they came up with the round, it makes sense that they would make a different caliber, that in case of a conflict, the Soviet munitions could not be used by NATO.

    This video was very well organized in its presentation and most informative. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this. I understand the comments by some viewers that Makarov ammo may be relatively inexpensive or at least readily available in some areas. That being said, I think it is equally important to be aware of easily accomplished case conversion options such as this should this situation change (as well it might at some point in the future). At a bare minimum, it is always prudent to have a "backup plan" to better insure having a ready supply of ammunition. As regards sorting thus converted and fired brass from casually picked up 9 mm Luger cases, it is easy enough to mark the bases of the altered cases with a broad felt marker to quickly distinguish altered and non-altered cases (I routinely do this with .223/5.56 brass which I have converted to 7.62x25 Tokarev cases).

      It's 8 years into the future, and the world is a complete shit show, with a diaper-wearing senile president in office, a totally rogue ATF, insane governors who don't care one bit about the constitution and radical progressive politicians at every level of government attempting to disarm the civilian population and regulate ammunition. Yep. Buy some reloading equipment while you can. And primers. Lots of primers.

  • @ammosmith
    @ammosmith  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @DinoPal No. The 9x19 uses a bullet of .355" diameter and the 9x18mm uses a .365"-.366" bullet. By our standars it would be a 9.3mm in all actuality.

  • @ammosmith
    @ammosmith  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No...the head diameter is totally different and so is the extractor groove.

  • @ammosmith
    @ammosmith  16 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Perhaps. I'm a stckler for precision though. I get some good results out of my 9x18mm. The real isue is again head space. The trimming not only gives the correct headspace but uniformity between rounds. I don't bother sorting the brass so I know that there are variations in case length. I eliminate that through the trimming process.

  • @ammosmith

    What other dies do you need besides the standard 9 x 18 dies?

  • @DiverCTH
    @DiverCTH 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It depends on the trimmer, but yes.
    Here's the method I use with the Lee gauge-style trimmer:
    1. Full-length size and deprime w/ Makarov die.
    2. Bell w/ Luger die.
    3. Trim with the modified Lee Luger gauge (see below).
    4. Debur
    5. Bell w/ Makarov die.
    6. Load
    By using the Lee Luger gauge and just barely belling the case, you can friction turn the inside of the case while your cutting down the overall length. Drop an M4 DIN washer (0.957mm thick) into the #19 case holder & use a power drill.

  • @ammosmith
    @ammosmith  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    It takes the taper out of the case so it will fit over the .360" trimmer pilot otherwise it will not fit. Also if you expand it then resize it the case will come out dimensionally perfect and will not crush when a bullet is seated in to the case.

  • @ammosmith
    @ammosmith  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 9x18 is a very neat little bullet. It's power falls between the .380 Auto and the 9mm Parabellum. Brass is hard to get since most of the Russian ammunition is steel cased. Making your own will reduce wear on the chamber and extractor.

  • @ammosmith

    No. The .38- is a straight walled case and the 9x19 is a tapered case. The 380 is a 9x17 Kurtz and that makes it 2mm shorter than the 9mm NATO so headspacing will be too far off.

    Good question. I think the converted brass will last a very long time. 9x19 is designed to withstand much higher pressures I have yet to have a converted case to fail...I have some on it's 8th loading.

    NO BULLSHIT this conversion WORKS. I now have in my hands a dummy round 9mm speer nickle cased marked but loaded with a hornady xtp 95 gr makarov projectile. Trimming nickle is a bit rough but this conversion is awesome. The dummy round I made dry cycles great. I can't wait to load some nickle cased 9mm makarov. plus 9x19mm brass is cheap. THANK YOU AMMOSMITH
    note you cant use 9mm brass that has already been sized by a 9x19mm full length sizer

    Anyone have a good way to mark 9MM Makarov to keep it identified and separate from 9 MM Luger?

      I use nickel plated brass or I use a black Sharpie and put a "X" on the head of the case.

    Thanks! You too. Remember to mark the brass with a sharpie or something to keep it separated from regular 9mm. No sense in going through all that work to lose a bunch.

    Now that Starline and a few others are offering brass it's nice. I came up with this when the pistols were first imported and I wanted to develop a load for mine.

    i hand load both 9mm and 9mm makarov and some other calibers, your aproach seems quite reasonable I think I will finally be able to fabricate 9mm makarov nickle plated brass, something i have wanted to have for a long time.

    You can get black brass dye at most gun stores for around $6. Or there are many other brass coloring treatments to help segregate the brass. Simply google brass coloring treatements to find a few good methods used by sculpters.
