  • Moto Apex presents a detailed review of the 2014 BMW F700GS.
The F700GS sits in the BMW line between the F650GS and the F800GS. The 650 is a single cylinder--the 700 and 800 are twin cylinder. We like the smooth power of the 700's twin for longer trips and expressway riding.
Moto Apex gives the BMW F700GS high marks on our standard criteria: seat height, balance, sitting position, controls, and instruments. It's a near perfect 5.0.
Yes, the F700 is a little expensive for a first motorcycle, but, hey, it's a BMW. We think at around $10,000 for the base motorcycle, you are getting a well crafted motorcycle that you will enjoy for many years. And, there are lots of accessories available as well to make it your own. We think it would be great for short trips by adding some bags (cases).

I've yet to find a TH-cam video of how this bike handles through the corners. Let me say this: I just bought one a few days ago and it screams through the corners and treats downtown traffic with disdain. I've just sold my R1200GS and K1600GTL and this thing is perfect for my riding lifestyle. It is not as fast as the previous bikes and lacks the speed and comforts but makes up for it it sheer fun and utility. I will fit Heidenau tyres and Barkbusters etc. in the coming months. It handles the open road and dirt roads with ease and full confidence. I've got nothing to prove any longer and just enjoy this little beast which is not too small and not too big, just right as it will take anything you are willing to throw at it. And it's not Japanese either, sorry but it has to be said as far as I'm concerned.
It is incredibly smooth as well but do try out the different seat options available. My seat is a tad hard but I just stand up on the foot pegs for a few minutes.
Well worth a test ride but be prepared for a seduction....

All the current F series (F650GS, F700GS and F800GS amd more - ST, R etc) are twins. The curent G series are singles (althought there were older Fs that had singles)

Thanks for the review. The F700 GS is my first bike. Gonna get it in about ten days. I am excited that the gear shifting and braking are rated so well by you and others. I am about 6'1". I will have to see if the smaller wind shield is going to be an issue or not for my fat head.

Aden, I'm thinking about getting this bike as my first as well. I'm 6'1" so I'd be very interested in your impressions of this as a first bike. Now that you've had it for 7 months, what do you think?

Good review, I've been trying to decide between the F700gs and F800r after 3+ years on a Gs500. The main two points for me are city commute and posture (old man back on a young man). Will be sitting on the two later today but I guess the 700 will be the choice!
Again, good review but for the love of all that's holy, please, do your blond spot checks :) Ride safe.

i tested the Triumph Tiger 800. Being a new rider, it scared me. On the higway at a turn, it felt like it did not want to lean into the corner. Thought i was going to go over the other side. How is the 700 gs?

SMOOCHIKINS I am a new rider bought the F700 and it is in my opinion very forgiving and turns where I want it to never have to fight it at all. Can change lanes basically by just knee pressure and a little lean. It is a great bike only had it a few weeks but learning and almost ready for daily commute to work which is about 15 miles in traffic. Also I have been practicing rapid stop like they taught in the MSF basic class. At 40mph squared handle bars the bike stops very well, at 20 or so mph it stops well within 20 feet which is important to me since I will be driving downtown at less than most likely 40mph. I also looked at the F800 BMW it is much higher and a bit more intimidating just sitting on it. I think it is a bike for more experienced riders who want the off road ability too. For my first bike this F700 makes me feel confident and behaves like a well trained horse. Was a bit expensive but I knew exactly what I was getting and BMW makes exceptional motorcycles. Corning on the F700 is basically easy as looking where I want to go and it just responds smoothly. Love it.
