Yes, the Uniden grant is the best Cb radio ever made!

Yep. Had one during mid 1980's, I replaced the finals with a bit more power o/p, and replaced the dial for thumbwheels switching. Then not longer after that it got stolen out of my car. And yes, it was my favourite rig, and I still regard it as the best. It had clarity.

I used to run an older President Grant export model in the truck back in the early 1990's and worked great. Had echo and talkback installed as well.

I still have, in a box, a similar version but which also has FM and additional channels but original which is not a modification. It was still working when he retired. One day I'll have to take it out again to see if it still works and if I can still find a use for it.

Great video and the Grant performs well. Back in the day I had a Tristar 747 which had extra channels and I loved it. In sun cycle 21 back in the 1970s, I talked to Florida from Southern England, UK, running barefoot from the car and a Rebel 600 mobile antenna. Happy days!

Tristar 747? Sounds more like an aircraft to me! Jokes apart, I also miss the CB life - and everything else - from the 70's and 80's. Those were the days.

I have a Realistic (Radio Shack) hand-held 40-Channel CB Walkie-Talkie with a Six-Foot Telescoping Antenna that takes 15 batteries, with two dummy slugs. Bought it new in 1978 for $180. I was walking through an orange grove in Lake Mary, Florida one day and I got this call: Hello, Hello, Hello, my name is Eduardo, I am in Bogota, Colombia, South America! Now THAT guy was putting out MORE that FIVE watts!!

Maybe not, I was Dxing from the UK to the US East coast on an old President Mc Kinley on SSB using only 10 watts on a 5/8 wave omi antenna, that was back in 1979/80 though the copies were few and far between but it can be done on low power output.

Thanks for the video. What antenna were you using to talk DX? My first base station was the President Dwight D when they first came out and then upgraded to the President Madison. My very first radio was the President John Q. I really liked the Madison with a super penetrator up 80' and used the Turner +2 with it. I never used a heater and talked all over the world on it( no modifications). 73 de North Idaho 753

I have this very radio. Had a reverb/echo board put in it. Otherwise it’s not changed other than aligned and the modulation. I’d like to get the echo removed and have it gone over and set to where this radio works best. No peaking just aligned and full 100% clear modulation

Thanks for sharing. This radio sounds great! I bought a Radioddity QT-60 and did the mod to it. I keep the power low and on days with a lot of skip I have reached a thousand miles. I want to still get a President radio that does all the modes. Not sure if I want the McKinley or the George. Maybe I’m mistaken, but I think the George is the new one with all the modes.

The president grant dx the uniden grant the cobra 148 gtl (and gtl-dx) and even the superstar 140 were all the same radio with each one having its own tweak in one way or another….president used uniden hardware and import rights to get sold in the US and uniden produced the first generation of cobra and superstar models….when the 148 dx and grant dx were released cobra began outsourcing components and eventually separated from uniden…..the 148 and superstar 140 became one in the same with a few slip ups now and then where a 148 would have a 140 fcc tag on the back…..many would swap face plates between the 140 and 148 and sell them off as 148s…..uniden and president however remained together and had much better quality control…..cobra focused on marketing and brand image while president focused on design and quality…..I have one of each version (minus the 140) and while they all share the same basic function the president/uniden versions are slightly more “luxurious” compared to the cobra/superstar…..but at the end of the day they all represent a time when cb radio was more than just a tool….when products were made to last and taking the cheap way out was not an option…..the cobra 148 has almost a cult following as a result

I still have my Uniden Grant. Exactly like this one.
Yes maybe ne has the frequency mod and it transmitted 20 watts AM dead key.
Had a Ham friend of mine do a cap replacement, but something isn't right as he couldn't get it to transmit but a few milliwatts of power. He said what the problem was and I've forgotten, but he explained it would cost a lot to fix it.
Still pretty to look at though.
Running an Anytone AT-55555n with an A-99 at 48'.
I do miss the Grant with the SS whip and the 300 whiskies in my 87 Mitsubishi Mighty Max back in the day.
Thanks for the memories. Still a good looking radio.

I really don't know what to make of this video. I've been a ham for almost 40 years and I guess maybe I'm biased with the etiquette and professionalism that most hams are attuned to having. But I noticed in your voice when talking to people on CB you dumb down how you talk to them. I don't mean they're dumb but you simplify how you talk compared to how you talk to ham radio operators. I have to look into this more and find out what this dichotomy is all about. But it definitely is real.

    • @SevenFortyOne
      @SevenFortyOne  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

CB has a similar, but different etiquette than Ham Radio. I don't consider it "dumbed down", just different. For an example, if you were in a meeting at work you might talk differently, perhaps more professionally, than you would at a family gathering. You aren't dumbing down your vernacular when talking to your family, you're just using different language as the jargon you use at work wouldn't apply.
