    Roads are musical in South Korea, as you drive over them, in a few places. Leaving the airport and in the tunnels. Fun fact. I experienced it twice in one week, while visiting family, there. One new highway we drove on had over 30 tunnels, one that was 11 kilometers long. Lovely country. Lovely people. Great roads.

      You are talking Seoul-Sokcho highway through Yangyang IC. It is here you get 10945 meter tunnel inside of which tire has to pass over special "rough" surfaces that make music notes sounds...i used to work there and the road offers amazing trip. Love it

    I've driven all over the country, and S. Korea seriously has some of the most impressive roads I've seen. They are superior engineers and their tunnels are amazing. Considering it was one of the poorest countries in the world in the 1960s, it doesn't get enough credit for the leaps and bounds they've come in developing their economy and national infrastructure.

    I'm a Malaysian and we drive on the left with Right hand steering. When I was driving there for a trip, I never thought it would be easy. I absolutely love the roads there and I noticed there's a bit of a teamplay there if there's something happening on the roads, like if there's an accident people turn on the Hazard lights, if there's a camera everyone slows down and then speds up afterwards. I love the driving culture there. 11/10 would visit there again. :D

    • @AllyMcLesbian
      @AllyMcLesbian 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yes but in Europe you can easily keep driving into neighboring countries without even stopping at the border. South Korea, not so much - either you plan things out well in advance to ferry your car to Japan (doable but lots of paperwork), or you try to cross the DMZ (no, it ain't happening). When North Korea opens up and you can drive the entire Korean peninsula then I'll be reconsidering :)
      Seriously though as is, a larger/nicer Korean car is a waste on its home turf. Something like a Hyundai Genesis, which I own in the US, is perfect for a crazy long road trip - I've been known to take mine from Los Angeles to New York City and back - but it's way overkill in Korea. However, a Genesis is far less likely to be targeted for road rage than a cheaper model (though pricks in BMWs will still rage on a Genesis).

    We went last year with our two kids, rented a car for a week and drove from Yeosu to Pohang. It was a great trip. We didn't' try driving in Seoul. (I have a friend who lives in Seoul who says she likes driving there because it's never boring!) We did hit some heavy traffic in Ulsan and Pohang, but the expressways were pretty smooth sailing.

      Good thing you didn't drive in Seoul because it's stressful a lot of the time. I can take suburb (1mil + population "suburb") driving in Gyeonggi-do just fine and have fun driving, but Seoul really is way too crowded, especially in the old areas planned in the 50s-70s which were never designed to even have cars.

    • @AllyMcLesbian
      @AllyMcLesbian 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Seoul traffic is insane, and without a GPS you will easily get very lost. However, I do have a soft spot for driving the Olympic Expressway along the Han River on an early Sunday morning - the gorgeous river scenery without the traffic. My favorite urban drive anywhere - even more so than driving along the Hudson in and around New York City.

    I drove in South Korea for over a week in 2008. Most of what I experienced then still applies today. It was a pleasure. One day I hope to return with a portable dashcam so that I can make some timelapse videos.
    Some pointers:
    - Although destination signs will be in English as well, regulatory signs are often in Korean only. Mercifully they are more likely to be in pictures, unlike in the US where regulatory signs are often written out in tons of words - but they do come in words so take a crash lesson in Traffic Korean.
    - High odometer readings are not unusual for Korean rental cars. I drove one with 85,000 km on it (over 50,000 miles).
    - If you book directly with a Korean rental car company (rather than their international partners like Hertz), you can get specific make/model/fuel type. Get a larger car than you think you'll need - if only to stay safe from road rage bullies.
    - An International Driving Permit is a must.
    - Driving in the countryside is delightful, and so are certain cities like the historical capital of Gyeongju. Driving in Seoul or Busan, on the other hand, is not for the faint of heart.

    Driving in Korea is a trip. Don't drive in Seoul on a Friday evening...and especially don't try to make a left turn. Left turn lanes can back up for blocks, and they don't clear quickly. Also, many drivers ignore both law and etiquette at any time anywhere in Korea. Always have your "defensive driving hat" on straight. Try not to drive during a holiday. Highways can get clogged to the point of immovability. GPS is mandatory, even for locals, if you want to find your destination. Don't miss your turn; you'll drive ten kilometers, and waste fifteen minutes getting back on track.

    The foam cubes on doors are from factory to prevent door dings, but also people tend to keep them on because they want to keep that new car look. LOL. Now they even sell them at stores. There are literally no police cars with speed cameras. So use the Naver Map app as a navigation on your smart phone that alerts you of any cameras. Korea is known for Bballi! Bballi!! meaning Faster Faster!. Almost all cars go over the speed limit. But a secret is you can go up to 120km/h on a 100 km/h limit highway and not get caught on camera. On normal roads just go over 10% over the speed limit. The reality of korean roads is there are much more traffic jams than what's on this vid.

    But driving skill and manner seems like a needed to reconsider. I shocked when drivers overtaken rapid pace but no indicator sign. It was probably about 80mi/h ~ 86(130~140km/h) at a speed limit of 100km/h
