I had no idea he was only there 4 years. Not trying to take anything away from his accomplishments in Orlando, but it's interesting they chose to make him the first retired number
I’m a Rangers fan, and when Brian Leetch was getting his jersey retired at MSG he thanked his teammates and called a few out by name; when he got to Adam Graves, Leetch let him know that his number 9 was going to be retired the following season. When Shaq called Nick Anderson over during his speech, I thought history was going to repeat itself - didn’t happen this time, but now that the Magic have broken the seal, I have to figure they’ll be doing this again with some frequency.
The second the team got the notice that the giveaways weren’t going to arrive at the arena in time for the game, they needed to come up with a better plan than “let’s just leave these on a table outside somewhere and let the fans follow the Honor System - Floridians are famous for sticking to the rules.” This was very reminiscent of a Mariano Rivera Bobblehead Night at Yankee Stadium - the giveaways arrived late, and the NY fans (another group well-known for their ability to remain calm and orderly) helped turn it into a shitshow. I appreciate when team go with premium promotions and not just the usual rally towels or schedule magnets, but the odds of things going south quickly when there’s even the slightest glitch is just way too high.
This is why I don't go to games when they're giving away a collectible item. People are pigs, getting a ton of the giveaway to scalp on eBay, etc. It pisses me off to no end. Abolish eBay scalping!
It’s a can’t win with them when they have giveaways unless they do it when you enter the arena. If they leave items on the seats, people take them before you get to your seat too. This was just a disaster since they didn’t get the items until mid game and then handed them out on the street while everyone left at the same time.
It's sad Rich Devos is in the Magic Hall of Fame, since he short changed Shaq and forced him to leave to the Lakers. Thus dooming the Magic to eternal mediocrity.

I think they’ll end up doing this more often now and can see Nick Anderson being the next in line.
Wow that's awesome! I'm glad he retired as both a Los Angeles Lakers and now a Orlando Magic what a cool event to attend!
The Heat retired his jersey as well.
oh wow i didn't know that as well @@ViewFromTheCheapSeats

They definitely needed a better plan and could have alleviated a lot of problems by having more people at the doors handing out the giveaways.

All the balls!
What about Penny, wasn't he a pretty big deal? I don't follow the NBA but I did go to a game there once and it was a good time.
Penny was a big deal. I’m sure they’ll retire his number (along with Tracy McGrady since they both wore #1).
