  • Robocallers are a nuisance, and it seems like they're calling us with more and more frequency. Using the same area code as you and other dastardly tricks, it seems like there's no escape from being offered another timeshare, vacation package, or home security system. But there are some things you can do to prevent them.

    --------------------------------------------------
    Following is the transcript of the video:
    Steve Kovach: Telemarketers have been around for decades.
    Telemarketer: Long distance service.
    Seinfeld: Oh gee, I can't talk right now.
    Steve Kovach: But in the cell phone era, they've gotten a lot more advanced. Robocallers can automatically dial your number and human doesn't even get involved until you pick up. For some of you, that probably means several annoying calls a week. But there are some things you can do to stop them.
    Let's back up for a second though. How do robocallers get your number in the first place? There are a lot of tricks they use. They can get your number from a variety of sources like dialing 1-800 numbers, filling out forms online, even charities will sell your phone number to third parties. There's no foolproof way to prevent robocallers from getting your number, but there are a few things you can do to mitigate the chances of it happening.
    Treat your cell phone number like your Social Security number or your credit card number. Don't give it out to a party you don't trust. If you have to give out your number, use an alternative like maybe your work landline or even a landline you have at home that you never answer.
    But what if it's too late? What if robocallers already have your number? There are a few ways they trick you into answering. One thing they do is spoof their number so it looks like it's coming from the same area code. You're more likely to answer a phone call from a neighbor than a random number across the country. Sometimes they'll even block the caller ID so you're curious enough to pick up. If you don't recognize the number calling you, just don't answer.
    No matter what trick they use to get you to answer, it's annoying, but you can fight back. First, if a robocaller gets to you, you can block that number from calling you again. It's actually really easy to do. On iPhone, go to your recent calls and click on the "I" next to the robocaller that just called you. Then scroll down and click "Block this caller." It's a little bit of a different process depending on which Android phone you might have, but go through your call log and you should see the option to block it.
    Android users also get an extra bonus, Google software can automatically scan a number before it calls you and let you know if it's spam or not. Then you don't even have to answer.
    The government can help you out too. The FTC has a national do not call list that you can enter your cell phone number into and if a robocaller calls you anyway, you can report them and they'll get fined. Most wireless carriers offer tools to block spammers and robocallers, so ask your carrier what they offer.
    If all else fails, there are a few apps you can download to your phone that promise to block robocallers. RoboKiller and Truecaller are two popular options. They charge a monthly fee, but they promise to block 90% of robocalls. RoboKiller has a cool feature that lets you send messages back to robocallers so you can give them a taste of their own medicine.
    Male Voice: You just called me in a local training exercise mode.
    Telemarketer: No I did not.
    Male Voice: I trained for six months to go onto America's Got Talent.
    Steve Kovach: Unfortunately, there's no way to block 100% of the robocalls you receive. They're constantly finding new ways to get to you. But if you're smart and proactive, you can drastically reduce the amount you receive.
    Male Voice: So you feel like giving like an honest opinion on whether you think my voice is nice or not. Are you cool with that?

      François Bélanger Boisclair, unfortunately for those who get spam calls in America, truth is that it is not illegal to engage in telemarketing. Yet. But you can only go online and add your number to the do-not-call list. It isn't perfect, but it cuts down on quite a bit of calls. I still LOVE the "Sinister" solution of handing the phone to your toddler. Alas, mine all my kids are grownups. !

    I do "block" robocalls, but it’s really a pointless exercise. Robocallers have banks of phone numbers; if you block one, they automatically call from another. In fact, whether or not you block a number, they automatically call from another. It’s just the age that we’re in.

      it doesn't matter. Your phone know when a number is in your block list or not in your address book. It could be programmed to hand up (or not connect) those numbers, but they dont for some unknown reason. I think its because people aren't asking.

    The federal do not call list is a worthless "Paper Tiger". Several years ago I had some maggot who called me as often as five times per day. I answered once or twice to try and reason with him but all he did was to talk over the top of me. I finally filed over fifteen separate written complaints against him and had no result. I finally waited forever on hold to speak with an FCC agent at the government website. I was bluntly told by the agent that " Oh, we never do anything about these complaints, we get too many of them." He eventually stopped calling. As far as I am concerned, all robo calling should be banned by federal law. Possession of spoofing software should be a felony offense and penalized with lengthy prison terms.

    It kills me when I hear someone say "But how did they get my number?". . . They didn't "get" your number, a computer just dials numbers sequentially and when someone answers, it's logged as a "live" number, then sold to more scammers. I also get a good laugh when someone says "But I'm on the Do Not Call Registry. Why are they still calling me?". The Do Not Call Registry has the same effectiveness as a stop sign. . . Those who obey the law will stop; those who couldn't care less about the law will not even slow down. Scammers are criminals. Criminals don't obey laws.

    I work in a sales call center. One of the best thing along with everything you mentioned is to get to a live person and tell them to put your number on their DNC. Do not call list. I always do that . I’ve even had to tell one guy who wouldn’t stop talking over me “Yo, pay attention! Put me on your DNC.”

  • @condorboss3339
    @condorboss3339 6 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    The "Do not call" list is a joke. Call centers based in India and Pakistan actually have the list and call the numbers anyway. They don't care about the law because there is no way for US and Canadian courts to enforce it on them.
    Also, you missed the ones which simply go through an exchange number by number (xxx xxx 0001, xxx xxx 0002, xxx xxx 0003, etc.) There is no way to avoid those except by not answering.
    If you don't know the number, don't answer is the only solution.

    • @condorboss3339
      @condorboss3339 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1) They are usually fake companies with nothing more than a post office box in the US. (If that.)
      2) To go after the companies, the FCC, ICC and other authorities have to file charges in the US or Canada.
      3) The US and Canadian authorities have no power to arrest someone in India or Pakistan. They have to go to a court in India or Pakistan and get them to agree to issue a warrant in that country. This is hugely expensive and complicated.
      4) Then they have to track down the people in India or Pakistan. Not easy to do in countries with a billion and 200 million people respectively, both of which have severe infrastructure problems.
      5) Then they have to get Indian and Pakistani cops to arrest the criminals. Even if they are honest cops, who do you think they care more about: The local thugs robbing people in their own streets or someone in a hidden office who ripped off a grandmother 10,000 kilometers away?
      6) Then they have to extradite them. Another hugely expensive process that may be blocked by some politician claiming the arrests are an example of “American Imperialism.”
      7) In short, it is too difficult and expensive to enforce in most cases.*
      8) The scammers know all this, which is why they don’t give a damn about US or Canadian law. Even if the US and Canadian authorities started the whole process, the scammers would just shut down the one company and start another long before the authorities got close.
      *All this assumes that the FCC and ICC could be bothered, but they are tied up with important stuff like stopping you from playing poker online.

    I have another way to deal with nuisance calls of all types, not only robocallers. This method may not work for everyone, but it has been very effective for me. I first created a few different ringtones for the various categories of people in my contact list, e.g. family, friends, colleagues, vendors, etc. and assigned each contact the corresponding ringtone. I then created a silent ringtone and made it my default. If someone calls who is not already in my contact list I don't get interrupted by the ringtone. If it is important they will leave a voicemail message. Robocallers rarely do that. On occasion if I am expecting a call from someone whose number I don't have in my contact list, I temporarily change the default ringtone to one that is audible. After such calls, I change it back to the silent one. This approach has helped me avoid 5 or more such calls per day on average for the past several years.

    One of the things I do is to answer "Yes" instead of "Hello". Some of the voice-activated systems don't understand it.
    Another tactic I use if I don't recognize the calling number is to act like a spook: A combination of numbers (such as "Four, four, three, two") is how some government agencies used to answer, back in the '80s. I had a kid call me 5 or 6 times in a row at 1:22 AM. I had call forwarding on the line so between calls I forwarded my calls to my local office of the FBI.
    I left it like that for about 15 minutes.
    The calls stopped.
    I then took my caller ID box to my local police station, by then this guys number was on my caller ID box about 25 times in 5 minutes.
    My local police department called his local police who sent an officer to his house at 1 am.
    Never heard from him again.
    This was in 2005 or earlier.

    There is a type of robocall that gets through all of this advice. They never call from the same number twice (even though the recording is the same) -- so blocking the number doesn't do any good. In fact, the numbers that I block aren't the numbers they are calling from. When I tried calling them back, it was just someone else who had been getting the same robocalls!

    I believe you not only were talking to a Greg, but a Patty and a Suzi too. My cell phone says it is blocking these people but the same ones or at least my same number is getting called every day. It never stops! I called the FTC put my name on list and it hasn't stopped. Just don't know what else to do but it pisses me off so bad that more of an effort isn't being made to stop this.. I don't know why you can't stop it by blocking your own phone. Yes not answering is the best. I made an outgoing text that says stop calling but they still call back. How awful not even funny. Your video was great. I hope Greg watched it and listened to himself. No incite what-so-ever! ) :

Most robocalls now a days start with the robot, who would fail the test or a peon who will hang up rather than take the test.

Then there's the beech who was evicted from the house I bought (this wasn't disclosed to me, in spite of CA law stating that such things MUST be disclosed) who gives my street address to every dentist, doctor, and creditor she can. The bills show up at my house, and I call the business listed on the return address, informing them that this individual does NOT live at my address and the business has been scammed by the person. I advise them to contact their professional organizations and their employees to refuse service to this beech. I offer to show up in person to assure them that I don't look like her and have ample documentation to prove I am the legal resident of the dwelling. T

    • @UncaAlbyGmail
      @UncaAlbyGmail 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but, like any other good idea, the bad guys eventually get wise to it. The calls are all automated anyway, so they don't really care how many are made to non-working numbers. They do not pay for calls to non-working numbers, and they don't care if that costs the robot an extra couple of minutes.
      It's like spam email. They send out 10 million emails, 9 million bounce, and 10 suckers bite. The 10 million emails cost maybe $50, only because they have to buy the list from someone. They'll make the $50 back on the first sucker. The next 9 are pure gravy.

    2 things: Delete the social media apps. Then set phone for do not disturb and customize it to allow your contacts. Your phone won't ring unless it is a contact. I went from 20-30 calls a week to 6 or 7 a week and on a few weeks I had zero calls. When they call may phone doesn't ring anyway thanks to the do not disturb feature. Buying an app service is a waste of money since the same amount of calls will get through as my method.

    I have an android phone and what I did was put it in do not disturb mode for all calls but my contacts. It worked, and I don't hear the ring for spam callers and scammers. I also turned off my voicemail so the scammers could not leave threats of legal action for social security fraud or IRS threats. My contacts can always text me. This has proven a very good solution. I still get missed call notices (silent) for the robocalls, and I report them on BeenVerified. Before I did this I had 437 blocked numbers in my phone. Blocking them does not work, they just spoof another number and come back at you.

    #1. Don't give out number so easily. True in general but not gonna work. Phone numbers are not secret tokens, they are very easily obtained.
    What works for me is to register a number different from your current area code. For example, you live in DC, register a Missouri area code number. I know no body from Missouri... if it didn't leave a voice mail, blacklist it. This works for me right now because current robocallers use the same area code as a tactical way for people to pick up as the video described.

    The best I've found for landlines is Nomorobo, and that works 90% of the time. Any more, spoof caller ID's and autodialers make robocalls a pain.

      Nope. I like to see if they'll call me by whatever ridiculous name I've invented for the call. Got one guy to call me Great and Powerful Oz.
      Or get them to repeat their sales pitch a few times. My record is five.

      Nope! I do it all the time ... but here’s what I do.. I answer the call on my cell and immediately press the “mute” button on my iPhone to listen to whatever prerecorded message is coming through or the silent spam call.. they hang up on there own. I chuckle 🤪

    I have used ATT Call Protect App, I know it can be downloaded to IOS phones, I think it’s available fir androids as well. It not only blocks them, but puts a future block on that number, plus gives you the ability to report them. It will usually tell you what kind of call it is, like telemarketer, scam etc. I love it. No cost to download and use.

    My method is simple. I assign a unique ring tone to each person/business in my phone book. Doesn't matter what, just something that is NOT your generic ring tone. If the generic ring tone sounds, ignore it and check back later. They will either leave a blank voice mail, nothing at all, or you'll get a legit voice mail from someone legit you can call back later. There is nothing that demands my immediate attention in my life. A few minutes delay does not hurt calling back a doctor, or the insurance agent or a family member. Another thing I do is tell people that are going to be calling me, I do NOT answer unrecognized numbers no matter what they are. Just leave me a voice mail and I'll call you back or I'll ask them what the last 4 of the number they are calling from and the area code, or what name displays when they call. Bottom line, nothing is so damn urgent that I need to answer my generic ring tone under any circumstance. I'm a simple man.

      Most likely you have. It's pre recorded so it sounds like a human. A way to check is to say something weird like "what are you eating?" Or even "are you a robot" and if they don't react differently then it's a robot

    Everyone is trying to find a way to deal with this problem except the people we PAY to do something about it.
    The government is not interested in getting involved at the corporate level, which is where most of these hideous scammers get your information from in the first place.
    Why are there no harsh sentences for this kind of thing? It's not even illegal to sell your information.

    HELLO! earth to disconnected millennial! a great many people still have a landline as their primary phone. you presented essentially zero information about how to stop robocalls to a landline, esp one that does not have caller ID. yes, dear child, it's TRUE! not everyone lives in a city, and many rural telephone companies do NOT offer caller ID, or charge an exorbitant fee for it.

      John Michael Bu... Hu... Hu... So this clip clearly doesn't have you as a target audience.
      Here's an advice for you: if you want to avoid robocallers on a landline with no caller ID, DON'T PICK UP THE PHONE!

    • @AdeleiTeillana
      @AdeleiTeillana 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Do Not Call list is open to landlines too. And I think it's stretching it a bit to say a "great many people". "Some people" is probably closer to the truth.

    • @johnmichael1594
      @johnmichael1594 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      oh i'm sorry... how many people does it take to qualify as a great many to you? there are 300,000,000 americans. what's the population of NY, LA, SF, etc? do the arithmetic. there are more people living in rural areas than in major metropolitan areas. and OBVIOUSLY the DNC list is "open" to landlines. the PROBLEM is that the robocallers get around the law and call anyway. this video gave FALSE promise of how to block them.

    • @AdeleiTeillana
      @AdeleiTeillana 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Michael Quick temper much? Question - do you get so defensive so quickly in real life or does hiding behind a computer screen make you bolder? According to the census bureau approximately 19% of the US population lives in rural areas, so your claim that more people live in rural areas than in cities is false. I don't know what percentage of the nation still have landlines, nor do I particularly care. I also realize that the DNC registry doesn't work well, however, your initial post claimed that his video was completely ignoring people with landlines, so I was pointing out that you were wrong.
      What exactly were you expecting from this video? You don't believe the DNC registry works and you either don't have access to or are not willing to pay for caller ID... Were you expecting magic? What exactly, outside of those two options, do you think will stop robocalls from calling your number. It's not exactly fair to get so angry over completely unrealistic expectations.
