  • This is a brief video showing how I diagnosed and repaired a damaged segment of the windshield washer supply line on a 2000 Chev Suburban. Parallel problems and similarities to electrical systems are discussed.

    The method I showed worked and lasted but when I found a better way to do this I replaced it for a better cosmetic result when I discovered a second leak closer to the reservoir.

    I'll do that, and I'll keep an eye on the connection. I like the idea of using small diameter irrigation hose as a generic substitute. Thanks for chiming in!

    Yeah, that's a good thought. Vacuum tubing is not an ideal choice here but it fit tight and the line isn't under a lot of pressure. I'll watch that area carefully in the future for leakage or breakdown. Thank you for watching!

    That's a good point, well taken, and I"m glad you brought it up. You're right, my vertical posts were protected and at no point did I cause any sparks. But those watching should always be shown the safest approach, so there is no misunderstanding. A better approach would have been to lay a cover over the battery and reveal only the parts of interest. Thank you for watching!

    Those tubes reminded me of the plastic connectors used in tropical fishtank tubes, not easy to find, i could see your problem mate.
    Your repair looks solid and far stronger than the original :-)

    Very common. Same thing happened to my 2000 Suburban 2500. I also had battery acid eat a hole in my washer fluid reservoir. I believe Dorman is the brand of replacement hoses I used. Those connections are factory. There are several segments of hose used in these applications. I also had a similar problem on my 2008 Yukon where the GM technician disconnected a hose to perform the recall on the heated washer fluid and failed to reconnect it.

    Yeah, when I read about that I checked and one at the back on the right is broken. But there seems to be no leak at this point so I'm just watching it. Those bolts may have been broken in the factory, I have never looked there before. Thanks for the offer, I may ask for your help in a few years.

    I had a similar problem but mine was on a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire. The hard plastic line was crumbling in a 2 spots. I removed the section and purchased a clear water line with a rating of 45psi (I think that should hold) from Lowes along with 2 small hose clamps - 5 bucks with tax. It seems to be holding up okay for now. I suspect it may need to be completely replaced if I plan on keeping the vehicle much longer but in the short term it's was a great easy, fast and cheap fix.

    Yes, I suspect the two leaks this vehicle has had over the years have contributed as well. It is a little concerning that the computer is just a few inches away, with lots of circuitry around there. I was glad not to have to remove those tray bolts, at least for now. Thank you for watching.

    Thanks! That stuff is more of a waterproof glue than a sealant, and it seems to be holding fast for now. There is no silicone in it, and it is holding fast. Time will tell -- if I have to modify the connection I'll post another video.

    Yeah, it's not under a lot of pressure and I suspect this will be OK. If it fails I'll find a better solution, but for now it's working fine. Thanks for watching.

    I had a similar problem. I picked up some plastic water line tubing from the local hardware store. I haven't had a problem since.

    I think your shows are great & informative & there are other folks who do the same thing. I was taught something called Risk Assessment. It is very risky to put tools & equipment on top of a battery my friend even though your top posts were protected. I am a firm believer that practice makes perfect and practicing perfect safety makes a believer out of everybody. Many DIYers watch these videos & I would like anybody to be safe & dont get into the dangerous habit of laying things on a battery.TY

    my first thought was a nylon coupler but these fixes are always about what u can scavenge without running all over town

    Check out my video "Replacing Broken Windshield Washer Hoses". I think you'll find some good tips in there. Sealant isn't really something I would recommend as a long term solution. It will definitely work as a short term fix but during winter it will condense and could split and freeze the fluid in the lines. You should replace that line with a new hose. Having the nozzles on the wiper arms is neat I've never seen that.

    Nice job spelunkerd, don't you just hate the fact that all battery trays are embarrassingly rusty when you remove the battery, My car is fairly rust free for a north of Scotland car since we run in the salt belt, however one day I had to remove the battery and I was gob smacked at the state of the thing haha why don't they make them from galvanized steel. Thanks for sharing.

    Nope not broken at the factory. That back bolt is the first one to go. There will be a ticking sound when cold soon. This is very common. There are other you tube vids on this issue too.

      +robert Davila If you're lucky and you can find an inexpensive junkyard replacement, your problem is solved. Failing that, it's either fix it or hope you can still get a factory or aftermarket replacement. Good luck!

    So what ID was the vacuum hose ?? A size would be very helpful.

      For a more exact replica of the tubing itself, the OD is 0.25", ID is 0.170", as shown on the package at 2min 22sec of the followup video, linked in the video description. If you want tubing to go over OD 0.25" you'll need 1/4" ID vacuum tubing to go over that. Metric conversion will always be a problem, and of course your tubing size will need to be measured.

    Splunk. Looks like an LS style engine. Have you replaced the broken exhaust manifold bolts yet. If not you will sooner or later. Good times. Did the wifes escalade a few months ago. I can help you out if you need some tricks.

    Theres not enough pressure in the windshield washing system to cause a bubble in any tubing lol
