That's not true, Phelps was just throwing shade at Bernard because all of the s*** talking Bernard did. Lesak had it won before the touch. I had tons of D1 offers in swimming - i was a freestyle sprinter, and .08 isn't really that close in freestyle and you could see Lesak was going to win. Now if he said Bernard went out too hard and faded, that would be true, but i think it still would be silly to focus on anything other than the greatest relay swim of all time, which was the fastest split ever for 16 years.

Bernard swam a 46.73 split which was the third fastest in history at that point. Only his teammate Bousquet swimming the third leg at 46.63 was faster. The problem for them was Lezak swam a 46.06 which absolutely smashed the previous record. In the 100m you don't break records by 6/10ths of a second that just isn't a thing. Bernard swam 46.73, it was the fastest time he was able to swim (his PB on 100m freestyle is 46.94 from 2009 which was world record back then, even if you consider the start advantage in relays, he basically swam his PB). The main factor that made USA win was Lezak's 46.06 split, back then he broke 100m world record by almost a second, and his first 50m wasnt even that fast, Bernard had 0.5s advantage at the start and 0.8s after the flip, but Lezak was able to find a higher gear in the last 20m. I am not a swimmer so I dont know if "riding the wave" makes this much difference, but Lezak's last leg and especially last 20 meters were so ridiculous nobody has come even close to his time. Bernard couldnt do anything, he swam what he was capable.

Lack of experience from some French swimmers at this time, but 4 years later in London, they were better and destroyed the US team beautifully.
