His first year generated plenty of excitement, with a number of high-profile, expensive signings, but after our promotion challenge (in the old Third Division) fizzled out in 1966-67, Bates lost interest. By late 1969, when he left, the club was in 23rd place in Div Four, and pretty much bankrupt.
