  • Our Reolink CCTV captured the moment a Sparrowhawk attacked/ambushed a Wood Pigeon in mid-air over our garden.
Warning: Viewer discretion is advised as some content is very graphic.
The Sparrowhawk, upon crash-landing in our garden, proceeded to pluck out the feathers of the Wood Pigeon while it was still alive and trying to fend off the predator. It was a lost cause, as the sparrowhawk's talons were firmly gripping its prey.
The diet of the Sparrowhawk is almost exclusively small birds, though occasionally bats may also be taken. As female Sparrowhawks are larger than males, they're able to prey on larger birds and can even kill something up to the size of a Wood Pigeon.
The garden was an absolute mess with feathers lying everywhere. It was a brutal attack.
Some footage was also filmed on a Panasonic Lumix G80 with 100-400mm Leica D6 Vario-Elmar.

I have seen the females take Woodpigeons and Collard Doves. Males usually take birds up to Blackbird size.
