Stick Control (Play-Along): A Real Game Changer

- Stick Control is arguably the most important academic book in drummers' history. Despite being published almost 100 years ago, it is still a best seller! This book has been highly recommended by some of the most recognized drummers in the past century, and for a good reason!
Practicing Stick Control offers way more benefits than you would expect from just a bunch of simple patterns. Don't be fooled by its simplicity. If you look under the surface, you will realize the infinite source of knowledge behind each one of these patterns.
Practicing Stick Control effectively and consistently will immediately upgrade every single major skill required to flow with ease between your ideas:
Coordination: Memorizing these patterns will improve your reaction time.
Time: Playing the same figure with different sticking patterns will improve your "Inner Quantizing System", meaning that you will understand the placement of each note on a deeper (way deeper) level.
Flow: Playing the same figure with different sticking patterns will develop incredible muscle memory to the point where playing drums will become as easy as speaking your native language.
Speed: You've probably heard something like "If you want to play fast, you need to practice slow." Well, it is true. The good news is that anyone can do this. There are no innate skills required!
Speed is nothing but the consequence of the consistent and focused practice. Don't even worry about this ;)
I am not being paid to promote this book. It really changed the way I play, and I hope it does the same for anyone who feels "stuck". I promise this works!

OMG! My mind is blown. I have had this book for over 15 Years and I finally get it. I will now start my new journey with stick control. Thank you so much for opening my eyes to the possibilities. ❣
It makes me happy to know this video helped you :). This book is a real treasure!
Brosef, years ago I would scour TH-cam for this kinda material and I was never lucky enough to come across these run thrus but I'm glad the younger generation or new players know they've found a gem.
Thank you 🙏
Fantastic video lesson here! Well done!
Maaaaan!.!.!.!…. I have viewed hundreds of videos and this is the one has me devoted to the craft again. I cannot thank you enough. Your way of explaining these exercises are so genuine and inviting. Please, keep up the excellent work! I’m off to practice. Thanks again!!
Thanks for your kind words! I’ll keep working to get more content
This is an awesome concept. I picked the drums up in December and been looking for something like this. Awesome stuff my dude.
I’m glad it helped!
Very helful!! Thank you for sharing with us and keep it up.
Thank you, so much, for making these videos! Bless you!
Glad you like them!
So glad i have found you your video and website, you have released me from my basic standard beat i was playing, and so true i got stuck with it , have been looking and using this book but never understood it's huge potential, now i have started using it every day and i and feel this is the only drum book you really need, as at first i thought it as a boring repetitive drum practice book but used your way will bring out your inner self playing drums and find your own drumming style and patterns. many thanks for a great video, i have and feel released with endless possibilities.
I am glad to know that this helped you as much as it helped me. It's pretty much the only book I study. Every drummer should know the power of Stick Control :D. Keep it up my friend, and let's work hard 💪
Love this approach. Immediately subscribed.
I appreciate that! Thanks for the support 🙏
Just started working on this combo. It’s tough but I’m going to stick with it and take it slow. It doesn’t happen overnight! Great video.
Thank you! I hope it’s working!
Thank you. This is perfect!
Thank you 🙏
Love It!!!...
Damn, them some big sticks! I can play the riffs. My difficulty is losing concentration while trying to keep track of the number of lines I have completed. Following along with the video is fine because you do the counting for us. Trying to do it alone, not so much, if I try to keep count in my head. One way to get around it is to calculate total time required for 20 repetitions. Example: 100 BPM, 8 beats per line, 20 repetitions is 8 x 20 or a total of 160 beats. So 160 divided by 100 is 1.6 minutes or 1 minute 36 seconds. Set the metronome to 100 BPM and set the timer for 1 minute 36 seconds. When the timer expires, you have completed 20 repetitions.
Fantastic channel, you explain everything so clearly for me; I cannot thank you enough. Subscribed
Thank you for your support 🙏
Very great work. Keep like that. Greetings to Argentina
Gracias! :)
Thanks a lot Man,great video 👍
Glad it helped! Thank you 🙏
GREAT !!!!
Thank you 🙏
So as someone that just picked up sticks and a practice pad, this video Is amazing! Truth be told, I did not memorize the patterns before playing them, but I'm sure over time I will, it didn't prevent me from following along tho
It's all about accumulating those hours!
Wonderful
Thanks! :)
exactly what I was looking for. 1st time I have managed to sit and play straight through. Will definitely be using quite often. I did notice that exercise 19 has different sticking shown for the exercise portion but great still! tyvm
Thank you for the support. I am glad this is helping! I noticed exercise 19 was wrong too late :(. It is indeed incorrect, but I hope you were able to figure it out. My apologies for that!
@drumnationtv7066 yup, was an easy workaround. Thank you for making the content.
Game changer
Great video, thank you. Worked through it today. Can you speak on why you use large sticks and also about how you return your sticks to a 90 degree resting position after each stroke.
Also an fyi: the notation for exercise 19 doesn't match what is being played.
Thanks again!
Thank you for your comment! I used bigger sticks in this video for no particular reason. I just like them.... The results with smaller sticks would be the same.
The idea of returning the sticks to the initial position is because I believe that before getting too much into dynamics, we need to master the FULL STROKE. The idea is to develop efficiency, and therefore, speed and articulation. If you time your hands correctly with the rebound, it will almost feel as if the sticks are floating.
This video might help you out if you want to get a bit more into this very important subject: th-cam.com/video/JMKwzuII7eo/w-d-xo.html
Also, thanks for getting that far through my video. I did make an editing mistake and didn't notice on time, so unfortunately I had to leave it there. I am glad you noticed and I hope you corrected your practice :).
@@drumnationtv7066 Thank you for the response. The notion of a floating feeling is fascinating and motivating! Thank you for the link. I will def check it out.
Hi . Thank you for the video . That is very helpful 😊 In what tempo you made the exercises on the video ?
You're welcome! I'm glad it's helping. The tempo is 60 BPM
Can you do a video on how you actually started stick control. What hand technique did you use , great lesson
Hi, sorry I missed this comment before! I did a quick video about the technique I use. I encourage you to explore all the different ones you find along the way but I hope you find this video helpful! th-cam.com/video/8wFXS309Egs/w-d-xo.html
Hello, I was wondering what was the e-kit that you used in the video? Thanks!
It’s an old Roland TD-15
HI,
Thank you for this.
So, is the concept, after learning the patterns, to run through them 20 times sequentially all the way through at a low tempo(say 60bpm) and then after a set time(few days/week) of that, bump the tempo up say 5-10 bpm and repeat the process?
I don't consider myself as an expert, but something that has worked for me really well is not only focusing on increasing he tempo, but also play the patterns slowly while playing simple patterns with the feet. It also helps combining them. I think what matters most is to spend as many hours as you can, and just let your creativity take over once you feel like it. You can also move on to the next page. I have a PART 2 video with exercises 25-48. Think of these exercises as words: Once you know them well, then they become part of your speech.
Hi great stuff there.
I am really curious about how you make the notes and the dot on it with evry note you play on the oad. Is it by any app?
I’m using Keynote for the animation. It’s a bit of a process but it works :)
@@drumnationtv7066 thank you so much keep up the good work
Amazint video im just learning from stick control. Can you send us that tabela for makeing patterns ?
I use Keynote to create the charts
@@drumnationtv7066 thanks
Good morning i am Ezekiel by name from Nigeria i am an intermediate drummer and i have issues with my hand not balance stick control and i really wanna fix them i know you can be of great help to me my right hand sound terrible and weak i we love learn and develop my craft from you thank as i await your responses
Hi Ezekiel! I've had a lot of issues, especially with my left hand. The key is to keep accumulating the hours and be very patient with your progress. This video might help you: th-cam.com/video/JMKwzuII7eo/w-d-xo.html
Remember to practice at very slow tempos. This really makes a difference.
Looking forward to hearing about your progress!
What are the big drum sticks you are using?

You’ve learned to manufacture music.
It seems exercise 19 is broken. It should be RLRLRRRL
You are right. I must have messed that up when editing. I am really sorry...
@@drumnationtv7066 makes the video unwatchable really 😆
@@JiYunNam First you need to get to 19 ;). Once you get there, you don't really need it anymore
