    I love Capercallies! Amazing birds, not scared at all of humans. Proud to share a country with them. They look incredible too, like a chicken wanted to be a peacock.

    I really admire Attenborough. A good sense of humor and willing to get into a little scrape just to show us the wonders of the natural world.

    Haha, same thing happened to me when i was hiking in a forest south of Stockholm, a capercaillie approached me and then lunged at me and made the same display. At first it was some distance between me and the bird, but i stayed in one spot and took pictures, and the bird continued to walk towards me, and soon he was within striking distance, lunged at me and i backed hastily and fell backwards like David.

    Love capercaillies 💕 Every detail of their appearance is unique and gorgeous: their chin tufts, their scarlet eyebrows, their ivory beaks, their fan tails and fluffy, tufted bottoms! They scuttle around bent double, kind of like Groucho Marx, with that crazy gleam in their eye, and make that insane glurking noise, like drains or popping corks 🍾🍾🍾 They remind me of the spoof ornithology page in Geoffrey Willans and Ronald Searle’s “Molesworth” series, which features a cartoon bird with its beak open and the caption “A Glurk, trolling” 🦃

    It is a great shame on the Scottish people who have nearly hunted this magnificent bird to extinction!! Some morons still shoot them today just for the sake of a Trophy even though there are only a few left. I have no problem with people hunting for food, but to shoot them for a trophy just because they are big birds is just disgusting! What sort of sick horrible disgusting people go out shooting these magnificent birds??? They are nearly extinct now! STOP SHOOTING THEM!!! Have some respect!!!!

  • @adaje5
    @adaje5 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    the thing is it seems to me that these birds do not run away from humans so it's not any sport to hunt them. during mating season you should be able to simply grab them and immobilize them as you would handle a domestic chicken, turkey, duck or goose. If so it is no display of hunting skill, or difficulty to take them. it also seems to me that it would be easy to live capture a mating group and captive breed them. sure the first generations would be tame ( you can actually hand feed these things even in the wild) but if you release them the generation that follows would be fully wild. also these birds are found all the way through Europe, Russia and into China. they really cannot be as rare as all of that.

    • @businessgoose5731
      @businessgoose5731 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      adaje5 you sir, just described perfectly why they are not hunted in the mating season

    • @brigidtheirish
      @brigidtheirish 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Honestly, why hunt them at all? They don't seem to have any fear of humans even outside the mating season from what I've read, so it's not like they're hard to find and kill. Like adaje5 said, why not just capture and breed them? Do they taste good?

      They're not rare, they're only rare in Britain because our countryside is so ecologically dead and we have so little natural space, most space being used for farms.
