Welcome to my local canal mate. Mostly I fish below the lock flight these days. However the area you caught the pike from was a favourite of mine some years ago. Used to be a bridge on that spot and you could often see pike from that vantage point. Do you remember when the power station was there?. It used to pump warm water into the canal. We could catch tench in January!. It's sad to see it now. A great deal of it unfishable due to the explosion of lillies and it's very shallow and silted up. The floating weed has returned this year and that could damage the whole area. It's a nightmare. Towards the town isn't as bad so far but the rate it spreads anything can happen. It's a non native weed so nothing controls it naturally. It's a case of man messing with nature, introducing something that shouldn't be there!. Other than chemical treatments l can't see what can be done. It would be impossible to remove manually and anything is going to be expensive. Only hope we can continue to pursue our sport and wildlife and fish populations aren't damaged by oxygen levels, lack of light etc
Roger Felton RogerF such a shame Roger, unfortunately I saw to many dead fish and rats 🐀. It can not be of coincidence, for rats to be dying there must be issues. I’ve seen some huge fish whilst walking about. My biggest came from where you mentioned. It’s in one of my other videos. Hopefully the autumn and winter will kill it off 🤞🤞🤞
@@BlackCountryPiker it's horrible stuff. There was a bad outbreak of it about 10 years back. It tends to be at it's worse around this time of year. It's usually gone by early Spring. I'll have a look for the video you mentioned, I'll be interested to see it. A few years ago l had quite a bit of success further up the canal past Beechdale around Fryers Road. I mostly only fished deadbaits in the winter but rarely blanked. The average size was pretty good too. Might be worth a look if you are this way, weed permitting of course.
As a non fisherman (chat to many fishermen on the towpaths though) but canal walker I found this very interesting, especially the size of the Pike you pulled out. Thank you for a great video on a very local canal.
@@BlackCountryPiker So many species and once even spotted a terrapin in the water near James Bridge, where a local fisherman told me he had seen quite a few on that stretch.
That seems to be a common thing now where people have brought them and ended up throwing them in the canals or lakes. The duck weed has reeked havoc down there but still holds some lovely fish

Lot of the canals around Rushall andd Walsall used to be very good, used to be plenty of doubles thrown in what you used to catch, now these doubles are few and far between,
It can be a hard water at the best of times buddy, canals I find can be very difficult this time it year. If ever I’m on the bank pop over and say hi 👍 I never really know where or when I’ll be out

Darren Beechall thanks for the kind words Darren. Ive never really done well on surface lures. I’m using the jig flies s lot at the moment as they are delivering but I do try others. I love my squirreley burts, Savage Gear 13cm and 19cm liplures too 👍

Hello, congratulations for your videos and your great pikes! I have a question to ask you because it is impossible to find a concrete answer on Internet. I live in Birmingham (I am French) and I have been fishing the canals of Birmingham recently (I only fish on the fly). I like the canals but the city centre is definitely too dirty and I lose a lot of streamers in the various garbage that litters the bottom...( it's sad to see the number of caddies you get out of the water...) I think I'm going to turn to the river but the fishing on the shore is very limited to fly fishing. my question: do we have the right to fish with a kayak or float tube. On the canal river trust site, it indicates that it is allowed but the kayak must be secured to the shore. Thank you in advance for the answers you can provide me. (If other people have information about the use of boarding in England ,kayak or float tube, please share !) Olivier

My limited knowledge is that any boat with a motor needs insurance but I’m not sure about man powered craft. Bare with me and I will find out, also have you tried messaging the CRT direct through Facebook messenger? They are good at replying.
@@BlackCountryPiker Thank you for your answer, I contacted the BAA who answered me that on the waters they manage, the use of a boat is prohibited...I think it's complicated to have a concrete answer because there are many different companies that manage English rivers...

In France, the management is totally different and I must say that it is surprising to see that on an English river, there can be several private companies over a few kilometres !!. It's public domain without really being public. But considering how people behave in the city (to talk only about the sewers that are the canals) I understand that everything is privatized... You don't have any money? so go fishing in the sewers of the city center!
PINAUD olivier totally get it 👍 in a way though it is good. By that I mean that the waters are governed by private fisheries/clubs and their members look after the fish first and foremost and the environment surrounding it. There are the odd few idiots that take no care but most do. Also great for the watching out for the illegal removal of fish.

PINAUD olivier your most welcome, the BAA own a lot of good waters and are quite restrictive. Other private clubs are less strict.
