Larson’s concerto for alto saxophone, written for Sigurd Rascher in 1934, is one of the first major works did saxophone to utilize ideas of non-standard tonality.

This is the perfect speed for this piece. Never understood why everybody plays first movement really fast in competitions. The composer literally wrote "20 minutes" on the sheet music.

I agree with your opinion. But why is the part written as 88 BPM? I think Mr. Sugawa's performance is very musical and has a good tempo. The BPM is not constant, but is between 70 and 80. His performance can be felt as "Allegro molto moderato" as written in the score. When players play at 88 BPM, most of the performances sound like they're in a hurry because their technique can't keep up. I'm having trouble finding a balance between following the BPM written in the sheet music and playing musically.
