    How long does a structure made of carbon fiber last? Example an automotive chassis, if its made of carbon fiber how would you test it after X amount of years to ensure its still structurally sound?

      How long a carbon fiber composite structure will last is heavily dependent on the loading applied but mostly environmental factors. CF does very well in cyclical loading so long as the load doesn't exceed the fiber and resin yield strength. Composites must be protected from UV exposure or else the resin that binds the fibers together will break down and show signs of weakening by discoloration (think of the hood of a small wannabe race car that is yellow and quite ugly... That is a result of UV exposure and inadequate paint to protect it.

      @@RockWestComposites Is there any non destructive testing methods in the event that you cant see the condition of the CF or resin, like it being painted.

      @@beachboardfan9544 Yes. There is ultrasonic testing which is non-destructive. And sometimes you can even do a simple tap test using a quarter or some other coin. You lightly tap it and listen for sound differences. This will reveal any fractures or delamination.
