As a Korean this is partly true.
First off some students don't wake up at 6:30 anymore. In some regions, the law has forced schools to start later(9:00). This applies to schools in metropolitan area.
Also, in many schools we don't have study sessions. If we do, they are mostly optional. (But not completely. Mandatory study sessions still remain in other schools.)
And only hard-working students study until 2am. This is optional, and highly up to each student(some study overnight, some don't study at night at all). Most students only do this before midterm and final exams, or when Korean SAT is near.

As a korean myself (I’m korean-American) , after school program is optional just like tutoring lessons after school. It’s not really required or necessary. They’re just intensifying it coz a lot of student takes it. Again, It is not required, It is optional like your normal tutoring lessons after school. The studying til 2am is up to the student.

He was in an all boys private school here and he said that he absolutely loves it and it's so much different than where he's from. He said he has much more time to spend on himself and going out with friends that it's insane. He even said that he feels closer to his family because he gets to spend more time with them.
