  • Ever wonder how a physics bachelor curriculum actually looks like? The you've come to the right place. I attended the Technical University of Munich for my undergraduate studies. I hope that this video can give those who are interested in physics an insight into what to expect when pursuing a physics degree.

    It was very interesting to learn the details of the physics program in Germany. In my opinion optics, electrodynamics and linear algebra are the most interesting.

    Yeeeeah, so im also an international physics Student at the RUB in Bochum, I’m currently finishing my 4th semester and we definitely don’t have THAT much math, seeing multivariable calculus in the 2nd semester is insane hahaha I’m glad I stayed in Bochum because I wanted to go to Munich in the first place 🤣 I like the way how from the 5th semester the major is segmented, though, it feels more guided, here in Bochum you can select whatever course you want and if you don’t plan it well it can become a little bit of a mess tbh.
    Nice video! 😁

  • @Katie-iq2vw

    Wow this is much more theoretical/mathematical than I expected! Did you choose to have a greater bias of mathematical modules throughout your degree or is this the same course structure for all physics students? I also studied physics but in the UK, and it had considerably less maths! I am interested in coming to Germany to study a Master's in physics (potentially the Master's in Quantum Science and Technology jointly at TUM and LMU), and was wondering how our bachelor's degrees would compare - so thanks for the video! :)

    • @ac_insights
      @ac_insights  ปีที่แล้ว

      No I did not! It is very math heavy, at least at TUM and is the same curriculum for all physics students. You can choose one of four majors in the 5th semester, in which you will take some specialized physics courses. Glad you enjoyed the video!

      This is one of the things at German Universities - the programs are very specific. As he said, you do not have general studies - or anything outside of the program that you are in. In most programs the exact courses for every student are the same - and you have very little area to tailor it towards your interests. Also it is VERY uncommon to transfer from one school to another - as their curriculum might be very different, and they will not give you much credit for courses taken in a different program.
      As in - if you start studying a business degree in Cologne - and life circumstances would mean it makes sense to transfer to Berlin or Munich 4 semesters into your bachelor - you will find it difficult to get any credit for those 2years at the new university.
      There also are those gatekeeper exams - where you will be barred from studying the same subject or similar in all of Germany if you fail it more than 2 times.
      It is a decent system for people who come in knowing exactly what they intend to study - and who have no interest in studying things outside of that. If you do not know exactly what you want to study to completion - it really is not smart to matriculate - because there is no time on campus to take a bit of everything that interests you and decide on a major after a year or 2.
      Many of the anglo-saxon norms around university are not normal in Germany. It is more akin to the Scottish or Canadian system where a field of study tends to lead to specific accreditation and a very specific career.
      This is also a reason so many of these types of videos are STEM heavy. This makes sense for people who love mechanical engineering and know they do from day 1 - not so much for people coming out of highschool and unsure about what their passions and talents are

      Thanks! Nice that you are interested in studying physics. In my experience, the most important part toward being successful in physics is having a natural talent for mathematics (the bachelor degree especially is extremely math-heavy). So if you are good at math, you will probably do well (being a good writer etc. is not that important, so don't get discouraged). There are plenty of physics exams from TUM online, so you can get a feel for the courses if you want to. The masters degree is more focused on specialising in one field.

I am planning to come to Germany for my studies(master’s )and I wanted to ask that although my course has covered a lot of topics that you have mentioned in you videos, but I’m afraid about the difference in depth of the subject. Because some of the notations that you’ve shown in your video feel like some accident script. Also how do I know that,” yes I’ll be able to do this.” And are the subjects that tough that 50% students drop out? Please if you have the time, solve my queries. Thank you.

    I am looking forward to admitting in the bsc in m&t program at TUM. Is it true that getting into TUM might be easier but graduating from TUM is harder than anything? Are the exams that hard? Anyways, nice content. You earned a subscriber. Blessings to the youtube algorithm you recommended you

    • @ac_insights
      @ac_insights  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, there is some truth to that - some programs are on average definitely easier to get admitted to than others. Especially in the natural sciences, admission tends to be less competitive. However, passing the exams in turn tends to be quite difficult, with sometimes 30-40% of students failing out of the program in the first 2 semesters. In other majors, this is not so much the case. Thanks for your kind words!

    Great video. I would also like to study physics at TUM. I would like to ask you, do you need a certain percentage of points from homeworks/exercises in order to have the right to write the final exam? I would highly appreciate it if you could answer that. Thanks !

    • @Richard-hj3ou
      @Richard-hj3ou ปีที่แล้ว

      By the way, my question is based on another german university physics study program. They require you as a student to get a minimum of 50% of average of all weekly homeworks in order to have the right to write the final exam, otherwise they will deregister you from the course.

    • @ac_insights
      @ac_insights  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Richard, this was the case in some (but only a few) courses in the physics curriculum back in bachelors. Most courses do not require any homework points, BUT: in many of the main modules, you could win a grading bonus of 0.3 if you submitted over 80% of the homework throughout the semester. This 0.3 grading bonus only counted if you passed the test, though.

    • @ac_insights
      @ac_insights  ปีที่แล้ว

      That question depends on your major - some majors, like physics and electrical engineering, have no NC (grade cutoff during application) and therefore you should have no problem getting admitted if you bring the necessary German requirements. Most Bachelor programs are taught in german, but other programs are taught in English full-time.

      That is a question only you can answer, as studying physics will take you 5 more years until you finish with a master's degree. But I can offer you some of my experiences: We had several people in my cohort that had already finished studying something else or were trying to change their careers. Their age was also in the mid-20s. Often times, these people are successful because they have a lot of experience and discipline regarding studying from their previous college life.
