I'd never done that for any player from watching highlights before. Next time I caught MOTD, I just wanted to see the Burnley highlights. Sure enough, yet again, he did at least two amazing things. Thats when I started finding a place to watch full Burnley matches. And, sure enough - every single week, this lad did something incredible. I started supporting the town's club each week. Im not from Burnley. I'll be honest with you, when I first heard about this 'chinaman', I wasnt even sure it was in Lancashire. But because of Ben Mee, Ive now got a Premier League first team that I love and believe in. Ive seen some extraordinary top-level centrebacks - from Jaap Stam, Sol Campbell, Vincent Kompany, Harry Maguire and even peak Winston Reid, to those in Serie A, in Germany like Hummels, and the Greek defence that won the UEFA Championship in 2004. Ben Mee is better than every one of them. He is literally the Paul Scholes of central defence. (Except he can actually tackle right..) In fact, the only thing more amazing than his defending, is how everyone else gives him absolutely no credit whatsoever. Paul Scholes is again a good comparison. We are talking here about arguably the best centreback in global top-flight football, in the last 30 years. So check this out...England callups: 0. Nought. Zero. Rien. Nada. Null. Tipota. Daquoquette. Hwachassa. Rakamibongo. Im just making them up now. But really: 0. Probably, match-by-match, the most consistently brilliant centreback in world football, for several years running, and definitely in England - at least of the ones whove been signed - has Never been given a single England callup. If he was German, he would've been made captain of Germany's national team years ago. Same for France, Spain, whoever. Never mind getting the callup. This time, the country with the worlds best centreback just so happens to be England. But who do they chose instead? From Chris Smalling to Joe Gomez to Tyrone Mings (the repeat face-stamper who shouldve been banned from the sport), the England defenders - the whole squad selection actually - is clearly not about talent or performances. I think at one point they tried to call up Whoopie Goldberg. Thats one of the reasons why I care enough to write this big comment. Without marketing him at Burnley - and actively pointing out to the media and St Georges Park his exclusion from starting in England's XI - what really is the point in supporting 'England' at all? They refuse to play the best players in the country, that will actually get England to the final. To support England is to support world-class players like Ben Mee getting picked every match. To support Burnley is - with all due respect to everyone at the club, and their hard work - to support the only real reason they have avoided relegation: Ben Mee.
