In my experience, as a south american person, if the song isn't as easy as "move your booty" and needs you to have reading comprenhention... it won't be listened as much as if it was just someone blabbering some catchy stuff (a good example is bad bunny)
I've seen some people in the comments say they don't understand how the music video is related to the song, but in my opinion, the music video corresponds beautifully with the song!!! I went kinda overboard on my analysis but here it is lol I think the song is from the point of view of a wife who has a very controlling husband/spouse. throughout the video, clips are shown of an old timey 1950s or 1960s couple, which is symbolic, because back then, women were still expected to be submissive housewives. during the first part of the video, the couple gets married. they have made a commitment to each other, which corresponds to the "I'll pack it in, pack it in, never smoke anything, never eat anything that will compromise my health, and baby, that means you, too, that means you" part. this new commitment puts pressure on the wife, because in those days, women were expected to fulfill a certain role in the household, while the men could do whatever they wanted. the "that means you, too, that means you" part might be intended to express the wife's desire for the husband to contribute to the relationship and the family as much as she does. in the next part, the woman is shown doing various chores, and serving her husband. she is shown cleaning, cooking, sewing, tending to the children (they have children, which are a burden on the wife, and they keep her tied down.), et cetera. at the end of the first part, it becomes more and more evident that the woman has a tense relationship with her husband, as he is shown doing things that visibly upset her. as the video progresses, the woman starts doing leisurely activities, like biking, practicing her makeup, and horse riding. then, after that little taste of freedom, it transitions into what I assume is an old kitchen appliance advertisement. I assume the visuals in the advertisement clip are meant to show that the wife is doubting herself. she saw how fun it was to be free, but she's afraid she's not wanting what she's *supposed* to want. she clearly doesn't want to be a submissive housewife anymore, but her husband is still trying to control her. according to the lyrics, I think the husband is limiting what kind of food the wife eats, where she goes, etc, and using lent (the yearly christian fasting period) as an excuse to deprive her of these things. eventually, she just gets fed up with this lifestyle, and she straight up leaves him. at the very end, she is shown having fun with a new man, implying that she finally found a lover who's good for her. Edit: i put the wrong decades. my bad
I think the kitchen appliance visuals are also meant to be the woman comparing herself to various appliances, like a dishwasher, an oven etc. Acting like a machine, which is very in line with the song’s cadence Made to do the same tasks every single day without rest and wanting to really be a person again

My two incredible kiddos were listening to this song which drew me in from the downstairs. I just stood there staring at them with a stupid grin on my face. I listen to music everyday as medicine now this is a new pill.
with a song like this, its hard not to want so much more attention for the artist, but then again, having a song fill a niche and only be known to a small portion of people is like crack. that being said, NEVER GATEKEEP MUSIC!! Music is for everyone! especially a masterpiece like this
I specifically remember hearing this song for the first time. I was getting dropped off at middle school and this song was playing on the radio. I made myself remember some part of the lyrics and looked them up as soon as I got home that day. Still love this song 9 years later 🥰
I hadn't realised this song had come out for download and I'd been waiting soooo long for it! I first heard this song when they put in on MySpace years ago!!! LOVE IT!!! Downloaded and listened to obsessively, I may add :-D xx
I love this song. It feels great to listen to after a long day when you can't force a smile any longer. Helps me recharge and vibe. I love the singers voice also.
I remember the first time I listened this. It’s been two years, but this song is still my favourite one. Back than I was suffering from the painful breakup. I ended the most long-lasting relationship I ever had, toxic and destructive one. Although I already had a new gf at that moment (we’re still together and I love her with all my heart), I used to question myself all the time. Did I make the right choice? What if my ex gf won’t get through it without me? What if I should’ve try a little bit harder? And then, this song popped up in my recommendations. It was like a punch in the face - in a very best way possible. There’s no other song that feels so close to me. Even the November and December mentioned in the lyrics, it’s that time of the year when I visited my ex for the last time the year before. What am I trying to say, this song did really let me know that I want to be free, I NEED to be free. All three of the 'Lent' single songs (this one, ‘Foolishly Wrong' and ‘Stalker’s Tango') became my therapy. You guys, I have no words to say how thankful I am to you. I’m sorry for venting, I just really love this song, this album and this band.

First off… if Oingo Boingo and Erasure had a love child… it would be this… right here. Secondly, I discovered this song right after my ex-wife and I separated at the start of ‘22… and this has given me life ever since. I may be late to the game here… but thank you for this.
For those who are wondering what the message is, here: The expectation for women, back then, was to keep the house clean, make the food, buy grocercies, and take care of the children. This song is the POV of the protesters, asking for their husbands to give them more freedom (like today) FYI If you want a detailed explanation about what im talking about, check out "cheese"s comment. "Cheese" explains it (probably even better) than me. This video truly gives out one of the greatest messages and everyone needs to hear this at least once in their life.
it sounds obsessive (verses allude to the singers partner not wanting to break up even though the relationship is truely done for), panicky and broken all at the same time. love it.
i just found this song this month and im obsessed, ive listened to it countless times and it sucks that it doesnt have more recognition but its kind like our own lil community here
holy fucking shit this song was already great but the music video works with it so beautifully to elevate the whole experience... I'm lost for words and I refuse to elaborate
I used to listen to this all the time a couple years ago. Whenever I listen to it, it makes me feel....things. not nostalgia necessarily. Just a lot of feelings. It's a great song.
this is the first song i listened to when i got high for the first time and it freaked me tf out i was alone in the house bc my sisters ditched me and told me just to get high so i did and listened to this for like an hour bc i was just so mesmerized and i started crying i guess bc of built up emotions and was like omg this is so me when i was burned out i listened to it again and a deep haunting feeling filled me so i can never listen to this again without feeling intense existential dread for some reason
I've spent atleast three years looking for this damn song, all I could even remember was something about the artist using a pink rabbit thing on some of their songs, then here it comes just strolling through my recommendations ffs.
The amount I've listened to this song within the past week is unhealthy
The only truly unhealthy amount of times to listen to this song is 0
Give it up for lent
I listened like for 3 hours
me too-
Same even this year
It's bizarre that this band isnt huge. This song slaps so hard.
exactly i cant believe this official video only has 200k views
never mind i just saw the audio version has 1m views...LMAO
In my experience, as a south american person, if the song isn't as easy as "move your booty" and needs you to have reading comprenhention... it won't be listened as much as if it was just someone blabbering some catchy stuff (a good example is bad bunny)
Totally agree! Today I’ve heard this song for the first time - and it’s ten years old already! Why we missed this gem 😢
All of there stuff is rockin❤️❤️❤️❤️
I listen to this song everyday, sometimes back to back. It's so catchy, I even dreamt of it. Obsessed.
Yay I'm not the only one!
Same it’s just too good
You know what’s wild? You wrote this comment 8 years ago…I found Autoheart 2 days ago! How have I not heard of them before this?! Sheer brilliance!!!
HAHAHA
Honestly that’s perfectly reasonable 😙
"Give it up, give it up, give it up, fräulein."
Every time.
Shit, I'm not the only one who heard it as such! Low-key still sing it as such tho
Can never unhear this. Thx.
Oh my gosh I thought it was that too
That is it right fraulen means in rough translation woman
"Unihearse"
I've seen some people in the comments say they don't understand how the music video is related to the song, but in my opinion, the music video corresponds beautifully with the song!!! I went kinda overboard on my analysis but here it is lol
I think the song is from the point of view of a wife who has a very controlling husband/spouse. throughout the video, clips are shown of an old timey 1950s or 1960s couple, which is symbolic, because back then, women were still expected to be submissive housewives. during the first part of the video, the couple gets married. they have made a commitment to each other, which corresponds to the "I'll pack it in, pack it in, never smoke anything, never eat anything that will compromise my health, and baby, that means you, too, that means you" part. this new commitment puts pressure on the wife, because in those days, women were expected to fulfill a certain role in the household, while the men could do whatever they wanted. the "that means you, too, that means you" part might be intended to express the wife's desire for the husband to contribute to the relationship and the family as much as she does.
in the next part, the woman is shown doing various chores, and serving her husband. she is shown cleaning, cooking, sewing, tending to the children (they have children, which are a burden on the wife, and they keep her tied down.), et cetera. at the end of the first part, it becomes more and more evident that the woman has a tense relationship with her husband, as he is shown doing things that visibly upset her.
as the video progresses, the woman starts doing leisurely activities, like biking, practicing her makeup, and horse riding. then, after that little taste of freedom, it transitions into what I assume is an old kitchen appliance advertisement.
Edit: i put the wrong decades. my bad
wow thank you for this!
Wow. Such a well put analysis, thank you! I didn't know "lent" had that meaning.
I think the kitchen appliance visuals are also meant to be the woman comparing herself to various appliances, like a dishwasher, an oven etc.
Acting like a machine, which is very in line with the song’s cadence
Made to do the same tasks every single day without rest and wanting to really be a person again
I reread this almost Everytime I listen to this song I love it so much😭
this is such a good analysis wow
I hate when a song is awesome, yet no one has ever heard of it
sometimes it''s good, it means you'll find people with only good taste in music if they like it.
@@bismarku trueeeee!! Tho it's sad that the song I listen to everyday..people doesn't even know about.cuz this music is poggs

The driving at I want to be free is so perfect
Oh love how this song progresses. The music video fits it well. Longing for her freedom.
Spotify just told me that it was my favourite song of 2020 and it helped me the most during the tough times. Couldn't agree more.
This came out 7 years ago and it’s still one of my all time favourite songs
My two incredible kiddos were listening to this song which drew me in from the downstairs. I just stood there staring at them with a stupid grin on my face.
I listen to music everyday as medicine now this is a new pill.
This song is 10 years old, WHY I’ve only heard it for the first time ever today,! Such a great one!

I impulsively recommend this song and band on the daily.
I know we are exclusively limited, but we who listen to autoheart, know the pain and know the joy. There music has bought me a lot man.

Seth-Ezra The God of Bread stalker’s tango is great

I love it when the music vid does the song so much justice omg

Idk why it took me so long to find the music video for Lent but it's just as good as the song holy crap
This song really got me brave enough to confront and leave a relationship.
