Films that actually used 3D immersively were Coraline, Rango, James Cameron's Avatar and Martin Scorsese's Hugo, The How to Train Your Dragon Trilogy, Rise of the Guardians and the first Croods. Some of these had a great director at the helm while others on top of animation had the great Roger Deakins as a visual consultant, helping the films hold up visually both regular and 3D.

    • @joylox
      @joylox ปีที่แล้ว +19

I wasn't allowed to watch Coraline as a kid (which I now understand) even though it came with my dad's blu-ray player. I ended up watching it a few years ago with some friends, and it was a great use of 3D! When it was still newer, How To Train Your Dragon and Despicable Me (and their sequels) where usually the go-to 3D movies to watch when friends would come over. Tangled was pretty good too as it was one of the first big animated Disney movies to get a 3D blu-ray.

Coraline was the first movie I saw in polarized 3d and, though I've seen lots of 3D movies since then, I feel like it was my absolute favorite use of the technology. It has a lot of really cool scenes that look amazing without being too jarring when viewed outside of 3D(The big battle with the other mother on her spider web comes to mind and is probably the coolest scene I've ever seen in 3D)
The flight scenes in HTTYD were also very cool though!

As an early 2000s born person, it reminds me of the time when I was a kid in the late 2000s to early 2010s after Avatar became the most financially successful movie of all time, every movie company forced this 3D stuff on us for the next few years, even going as far as to make 3D BluRays and the 3DS as you have iterated.
After the trend died, I eventually noticed that they hadn't done much with it since then except for IMAX and local cinemas bringing 3D back just for Avatar screenings.

The “new” 3DS greatly improved the viewability of the 3D, where as long as it’s properly calibrated, sensors on the device will track your face and know where to angle the 3D. You have to do an initial calibration when setting it up, and then you can go back to the settings and redo it if you notice issues later. Certain games use it in really nice ways, like many games having their cutscenes animated in 3D, so while playing on my new 3DS LL, I like to turn it on for that spectacle at times, but it gives me a headache if I turn it on for too long, sadly. The face tracking makes it very usable except for that.

Interesting, as your comment unlocked a similar memory for me.
I had watched a limited subset of that at an amusement park while on holiday in the Gold Coast (probably WB Movie World) in 2010, that I believe was a 4D experience instead of just 3D, and that was the first time I learnt about the existence of different editions of books, especially famous ones that would get reprinted many MANY times.
There was also a tiny element in the film that I wouldn't have thought about if I was just watching it in 2D, but in 3D, that got engrained enough into my mind to mix with a couple other figments to create a little element for an animated series idea I was inactively working on around that time, that element being an object or character which would later be scrapped a couple of times and have some elements carried over to a graphic novel idea I've been inactively working on since 2018.
Edit: I had never watched the full film, only that limited 4D experience.

I'm actually glad there's not a lot of 3d anymore, since I cannot see out of my right eye, resulting in 3d just not working for me. Since I can't see 3d, it makes me feel a bit left out. I wish someone could create a type of 3d that is all digital, and does not require 2 eyes in order to see it. When I saw star tours at disneyland, it wasn't as impactful for me as it might've been for other people, but I did notice something. When I looked at it without the glasses, I could see 2 images, but with the glasses, I only saw 1. 3d glasses do have an effect on me, and seeing star tours with the glasses was better than without, but I still couldn't see in 3d, since I was only able to see 1 image.

Like 2/3 of the way through the movie (pretty sure it was during the buildup to the fight scene at the end), Floop appears on screen and instructs the audience to remove their glasses. Confused looks all around, but when we took them off, our vision was "stained" in blue and red, so we could experience the 3D effect without glasses. I only put the pieces together when I played for a long period of time and when I looked up everything was blurry and I had a pounding headache.
It's safe to say I avoid 3D things like the plague now.

I’m just popping in to say that the “New” 3DS had a much better 3D screen that could be viewed from any angle and didn’t give me headaches or eye strains like the original did. The 3D on the OG models did suck though and I never used it but I used the 3D on the “New” 3DS quite a bit.

It was fun to see movies in 3D, it was a real treat before it was everywhere. The ones I remember most were Disney’s “A Christmas Carol” as it gave the classic tale a new experience of feeling like you were really there, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The headaches I would get afterwards though wasn’t fun.

God I remember watching the One Direction movie in 3D in the cinema and it was really weird because all of their on stage segments and live performances were edited so obviously to work for 3D (the moment when the red and white balloons were thrown out during WMYB is seared into my memory) but the rest of the time when the boys went home and we just saw their off time, it was really weird since there was no point in it (although seeing Niall Horan on the tour bus in 3D mesmerised 9 y/o me)

Any of y'all remember when Nickelodeon made "smellovision" movies which were just scratch and sniff cards that came in the DVD case of the movie, and a little symbol would pop up on screen to tell you when to scratch and sniff a particular spot on the card? I only remember it coming with Rugrats Go Wild and being very disappointed that the "Phil's Feet" scratch and sniff section only smelled mildly bad. There was also a jar of jelly or peanutbutter I think, and that one was also disappointingly mild.

Omg, I just felt the nostalgia really hard. This was exactly my childhood / teenage years. While I'm from Europe, the development was almost the same as you described it in the video. I went to the cinema a lot with my parents and I think there were a few years where I only saw films in 3D. I still have a bag full of 3D glasses that I need to recycle, but I somehow missed the point a few years ago when I had less time and the pandemic came up. (We kept them after the film as I think our movie theater charged like 1€ for a new pair. Obviously we still always forgot them or went with friends so now I have like 20.)
The 3DS was sadly out of our budget, but I remember that my cousin got it and I wanted it so badly - but only because it was the most gorgeous metallic blue🤣I played some Mario Kart on hers but I think I might've broken the record for the person with the fastest time to give up due to feeling sick because of the 3D, I didn't even make it through one round I think.
The 4D cinemas I also remember, if in 30 years or so people look back on this decade they won't believe it. These are the weirdest stuff ever, not to mention the places you could find them. I was a very anxious child (and still have anxiety issues, look at that, how surprising), so everything that was that unpredictable and made to catch you a little bit off guard was the true horror to me. Yup, that's right: a normal 3D movie was fine but the pure thought of a movie theatre with moving seats scared the sh*t out of me🤣
Anyway, this didn't add much to the conversation but I just wanted to share my experiences and help the algorithm. Because I think your videos need more attention😊

the psychic damage i received at the mention of making nerd glasses from the reald glasses 😭
i can only remember one movie ive ever seen in 3d though, and it was frozen. my family donated to a canned food drive at a theatre so we got free tickets for any movie, so of course we opted to see frozen in 3d since it would be free! i think the snow effects worked gorgeously with the 3d effect (the let it go sequence especially was wonderful in 3d), but i cant remember any other parts that utilised 3d as well. im honestly kinda glad that we left the 3d craze behind since theres no real charm to it anymore (imo), but i do like that the 3d craze gave us the nintendo 3ds, aka my favourite console ever.
also just a note, there was an updated 3ds that improved on the 3d feature !! it used a special type of camera to track where your head was and would adjust the 3d display accordingly. granted i have a new nintendo 3ds xl, and i still rarely use the 3d because it gives me headaches after long uses, but i find myself using the 3d more on my new 3ds than my old one because its highly improved

When I was a kid in 2015 or so the aquarium my dad worked at during that time introduced a 3d theatre, that’s the only time I ever experienced a 4D film. It was interesting and it freaked me out. I was undiagnosed with autism at the time so I wasn’t as in control and I remember having a meltdown over the way it confused me, they also splashed water at us through little spots in the seats and it horrified me. I was around 6 or 7 at the time.

But a lot of home releases used the Red & Blue glasses. I like to think there's some rich 3D enthusiast, collecting the film reels for these.

Until a few years ago I never turned it off unless I wanted to show games to friends. Now I turn it off while doing homebrew stuff or sometimes when playing games that are only partially 3D, but I always turn it on when playing full 3D games. Some scenes look simply amazing and I don't get why everyone who doesn't get a headache still hates the 3D effect. Also, about cinema 3D glasses. I repainted them into superhero glasses with stuff like a "targeting system" on the inside of the glasses and painted parts of the outside glass with glitter colours. I still have all of them

I've stumbled across a number of your videos, it's interesting because they always make me feel old. It's fascinating when I hear 20 something's wax nostalgic about something as recent as the year 2005; basically what feels like 3 years ago or so. To me the styles, trends, etc have barely changed since the mid 90s. Basically nothing newer than about 1995 can ever seem old or nostalgic, it's all still too modern. Films look the same since then (basically when CGI started to be used en masse). Music stylistically took on its modern pop sound that basically hasn't changed since about then. Video games became 3D polygonal around that time too which is still the same. Cheers!

I remember someone having a 3D phone using the same kind of tech as the 3DS, but I gotta say, touch screen and 3D just ruined the illusion. Although I do still like my dad's 3DTV and the 3D blu-rays of the mid 2010s. How to Train Your Dragon (and sequels) looks beautiful in 3D, and Coraline was so spooky with the 3D effects. My dad's uses the same Real-D glasses, so I just took them home from the theatre. I gotta say, I miss 3D TH-cam, and the New 3DS really improved the viewing angle. The videos were fun, and I liked making 3D drawings on it. I wish some of that stuff was still available to buy in 3D. I think the most recent one I have is probably Zootopia.
It seems like most 3D stuff today is focused more on VR, as some headsets use two separate screens to get a 3D type look, and most current 3D cameras are made more for getting video that looks better in VR. VR makes me more dizzy than 3D stuff does, so I'm not sure how that will go.

  • @kamuta1640

My family actually has the 3D TV, my parents bought it in 2013 or something, but the only thing that actually made me go wow with this effect was some default tech demo that had lots of stuff going right into your face, while other movies eather just didn't work at all cause we fucking pirated them or didn't have these 3D oriented moments. We still have this TV but just use it as regular one. And we've lost it's glasses long ago. Tho it still looks pretty fancy with it's colorful lights on the back.
Also, I've recently bought a modded new 3DS and I LOVE it's 3D. It doesen't just rely on that objects-approaching-to-you-thing, but makes the entire game look more deep and layered. Even games with 2D graphics such as Ace Attorney look way better to me with it's BGs, sprites and diolog windows being on different depth levels. Even when I'm in position in which I keep console too close to my eyes and 3D starts being iffy I don't want to turn it off cause everything will seem look so bland without it (however I totally get why old models owners almost did't use it)

I remember really wanting to see Spy Kids 3D, and one day at Wal-Mart I saw Spy Kids 3 on the shelf for VHS. I begged my parents to get it for me, though I found it very amusing that they forgot to put the D on the box.
We got home and I put it in my bedroom VCR and was shocked to discover that this version wasn't 3D at all! Apparently only the DVD version was in 3D. So came the point of begging my financially secure but stingy parents to buy a DVD player in the year of our lord 2004.
Well, one day it finally happened and we got a cheap little DVD player and Spy Kids 3D. But alas, I was barely 7 years old and had never interacted with a DVD player before! I can't remember what it was, but I had trouble getting the movie to play. My older sister saw my frustration and responded with "Maybe God hates you for buying the same movie twice."
For some reason that memory has stuck with me my whole life and I needed to share it.
