Butterfly Puddling

- Butterflies are usually seen on flowers. But they sometimes land on damp ground or salty surfaces. WHY? Nectar is the staple of a butterfly's diet. But they can not live on sugar alone. They need minerals too. So they occasionally sip from mud puddles. This behavior occurs more often in male butterflies, which incorporate the minerals into their sperm. These nutrients are transferred to the female during mating.

After all these years, I'm glad Kenneth, my father, finally found a way to give me "the talk." Thanks TH-cam!
Awesome butterflies and excellent filming, Ken! I really enjoyed it a lot. Thank you for sharing. Have a great weekend, my dear friend! :)
Butterflies are indeed awesome!. Thanks for watching. You too, have a great weekend! ATB .... ken
My husband and I have helped build four butterfly gardens in Sunny Isles Beach, Miami. If you ever come here, love to see you!
Thank you, Ken. You've brought back song into my heart. Happy Thanksgiving!
You're welcome Jb. Happy Thanksgiving!
At first glance, I thought the title was "Butterfly Pudding". :)
Excellent video! You've got yourself a new subscriber.
Thanks Steve, for watching and subscribing. Have a good week ahead!
Excellent Ken! Seems you have been smitten by the colorful and intriguing world of butterflies. Congratulations on your superb macro videography and informative dialogue. :))
Hi Papillon. Oh yes, Butterflies are intriguing. At last, I've discovered what is necessary so I don't frighten butterflies and am able to take macro videography. Don't bathe. ATB, my friend. ken
I had no idea how interesting butterflies are. Really never look at one up close before. those are great shots of the butterflies. I have to say have more respect for them now. Another great A video you have produced. I hope you don't mind but I like to share this on my Facebook page. Keep up the excellent work Ken. I always look forward to your videos.
Thanks Bob. Yes, please share the video! Butterflies are amazing. If you "become animal" they will land on you and it is possible to see their delicate features. They take-up nutrients with mouth parts that are not much thicker than human hairs. When I was at Big Bend, several male butterflies followed me for hours... They wanted to puddle on me AND this provided an opportunity for close-up, personal observation. It was good to know that my presence provided minerals necessary for survival ....
That's really cool Ken. You have a great connection with nature. I'm a little bit envious :-)
He was probably after the sweat on your backpack strap. They are also fond of scat and urine.
Really like this! Great shots. I knew that all kinds of animals and bugs get salt and minerals from various things, but never noticed the butterflies doing it in this way. Good work. Donny.
Thanks Donny. Butterflies are amazing creatures....and it was fun to make this video. ATB. Ken
Nicely done Ken. The butterflies like you.
Thanks Bob. I am becoming animal. When camping alone, the animals approach me.
What a beautiful video Ken..I always love to watch them and never want to miss these awesome Butterflies..For me I have to wait for a Butterfly till next summer :)You have captured them so beautifully and I enjoyed very much..Thank you for your wonderful video. Friend Menu :)
Thanks Menu. Living in a semi-tropical climate we see butterflies much of the year! Have a good weekend, my friend. ATB ... ken
Love this video. Great shots of some beautiful butterflies. Also a lot of info I didn't know such as mudding. Thanks, and keep them coming.
Thanks. I'm glad you like the video. Wishing you and yours a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving.
Yesterday I was at a farm in a neighboring town, and on one of the fields there were practically hundreds of Cabbage White butterflies fluttering about. Some of them would gather near a damp part of the ground and drink some of it.
I also had a Monarch butterfly sip the sweat on my finger once.
Awesome. Thanks for watching and committing. Butterfulies are fun to watch.
Wonderful video Ken. 1:50 Butterflies also like the human skin. The also has a lot of minerals. The same thing happened to me on vacation. The butterfly has landed again and again on my hand. ;-) Thanks for sharing and have a fine weekend my friend.
Best wishes Tito
Thanks Tito. Have a wonderful week ahead, my friend. Best wishes, Ken
Great butterfly captures Ken. I knew they like mud - now I know why !
Thanks, my friend. Have a safe and peaceful Thanksgiving!
Hi Ken,
There aren'tmany butterflies left in the UK now. They are getting ready for winter. Apparently they can over winter as both Pupae and adults..
The weather over there looks great. I wish it would stay warm all year long. A hard frost here this morning.
Sandy
Hi Sandy. One of the advantages of living in a semi-tropical region is that the winters are mild. Last year, for example we didn't have any "hard frosts." Maybe we will be lucky.... like several years ago ... and see a few snow flakes.... maybe sometime??? ATB my friend. Have a good weekend, Ken
Fascinating video Ken. I really enjoyed it ~ Paul
Thanks Paul!
Beautiful Ken:) Love your little friends...they gave you some great poses and plenty of time to capture some really remarkable footage:) I also learned something -as I always do on your channel:D Thank you!:)
You're welcome, David. The natural world provides a great deal of beauty and peace. Wishing you and your family and safe and relaxing Thanksgiving.
I love butterflies:) Thank you! I heard the puddling you described referred as a "male drinking party". I did not know that about the minerals. Interesting. Maybe the one on your pack and on your hand liked the sweat or something. I really love the sound of the birds:)
Thanks for watching my friend. ATB, ken
That's amazing Ken! I always thought that the butterflies and bees were drinking water from the mud puddles. You've developed quite the touch with insects lately. Do you know if butterflies need protein, and if so, where do they get it from? Or do they already have all the stores of fats and protein they need from their caterpillar days?
Thanks Melvin. Great question. I need to research the answer…..
Excellent vid Ken , stunning shots of the butterflies very interesting facts , thank you for sharing stay safe Paul
You're welcome Paul. Have a wonderful week ahead, my friend. Ken
Some great shots Ken, a lovely video :)
Best Wishes....Les.
Thanks Les
Beautiful video of butterflies. Cool video shots. I love it.
Thanks for watching!
I didn't realize I missed this video when you first put it up! Anyways, great video, that guy was going for it! I was thinking either the butterfly thinks that the shininess of the strap is muddy water and that's why he's there or there is actually water and minerals(maybe sweat?) on your backpack.
Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. Have a good week, my friend. ATB .... Ken
This was a lovely video. You really do these so well.
I love butterflies. They're gorgeous. Very interesting, often surprising.
Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. ATB .... ken
found this fascinating..... great video Ken showing this to my children
Me and my girls are growing painted lady caterpillars we got 33 of them to grow into butterflies
Awesome!
Thanks for posting, nice vid! Males puddle in groups, females puddle solo.
Fantastic images captured in film Ken. Greeting from England, I love butterflies as well - I aspire to try and study one particular woodland specialist species known as White Admiral (Limentus camilla) in my third year of study at university - I want to know what exactly makes a habitat favourable for the expansion of White Admiral populations as records are showing they are extending their ranges in the South of England.
+DRBWildlife Thanks for watching and commenting from England. Butterflies are amazing creatures. Enjoy your university studies. I have fond memories of studying entomology in university, more than 50 years ago...
my dear friend, is so lovely, many thanks and thumbs up
Hi Anke. Thanks for watching at the thumbs up. ATB, my friend. Ken
I never knew that Ken, thanks for sharing this. Take Care my friend :-))
I'm learning something new every day! Have a good weekend, my friend. And stay safe.
Awesome video
amazing! I had a pigeon, that would eat dirt. I guess, it didn't have enough minerals in its diet of pigeon food.
How does it feel getting a butterfly absorb salt off your skin?
Tickles
Do moths do this too?
Enjoyed the video, Ken. But I thought the post said Butterfly Pudding so kept looking for the recipe :)
Cathy
Thanks Cathy. You made me smile. Butterfly pudding would be tasty, if it were made with sugar, cream and cinnamon... Have a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving. Ken
Would the sweat on your bag be what the butterfly is sipping?
My sweat must have smelled and tasted good! Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. ATB ... ken
KennethKramm Is that a relative to the monarch butterfly, @ the beginning?
I have some butterfly videos on my channel (really short ones). Thanks. -_-
Justwantahover Yes, it's a Monarch.
Well Ken, i made me one of these.🤞 I'm trying everything to attract butterflies. Thank you for this project..
Stunning image quality.. !!
May I know what type of camera do you use ?
Canon Vixia HF G10; editing with Final Cut Pro X
This Is the Closeup View Of Mudpuddling
Yes!
th-cam.com/video/ocUWRTtVNEg/w-d-xo.html I mean this one more closer than yours. Hope you will enjoy
Thanks Ken! Pura vida!
Had that happen to me also. They like the salt off your sweat
Thanks Kenneth. I've always been curious about the sex lives of butterflies...hahahahaha.
Guess you didn't know what you didn't know. I feel sort of strange after learning that I contributed to the reproductive success of male butterflies.
Hi, great Video, nice pictures, really, you get my Abo! Best wishes from Germany, Renchtal, Pa.Pa.
Hey ken, just want to let you know that if you ever had a trek and in invited people and charged a reasonable fee, I would Surely attend. Even if for only the weekend. Thanks - Mike Smith
Thanks Mike, I appreciate your kind feedback. Bob808Knight and I are planning a "meet-up" this spring. The location and date have not yet been determined. It will be informal with no fees. We will announce it on our respective TH-cam channels early next year. See the video series on my channel about "Caprock Canyons Meet-up" from several weeks ago; to get a better idea of what we may be doing. All The Best, my friend ..... Ken
Thanks Ken, sounds great and love your and Bobs videos. Thanks again and will be looking forward to the meet-up. - Mike Smith
Very interesting and very beautiful!!
ATB
Thanks for watching Josh!
How councidental is that?! At 0:28 with the big word _why?_ the group puddling are question mark butters....
Like, very good video. Done + bell on. Thanks
great close up videoing ken, you must becoming animal to get that close..i will definitely try to get closer to the guys when i run across them now.
i like the phrases , become animal.
stay safe brother.
..bill
Yes, I am becoming animal. The terminology is not original to me however. I've been reading "Becoming Animal , an earthly cosmology" by David Abram. The book is about how to tune into the rhythms of the earth, similar to indigenous people -- many years ago. The most important "trick" to attract butterflies (particularly males) is to NOT bathe. They need the salts/minerals from your body for reproduction and transfer to females.... Have a good weekend, brother. ...ken
KennethKramm That sounds like a fascinating book. I will have to try to find that at my library...
NICE VIDEO :-)
I always wondered
Thanks for watching and wondering! Have a good weekend, Oregon Mike!
★★★★★
Great Video!
Thanks for watching!
0:18 Those look like _Question Mark_ butterflies.
Yes, Question Mark butterflies at first puddle and on my backpack. Don't know the name of the yellow puddling butterflies.
Forgive the off-topic question, but, how did you make those italics?
