I recall hearing about this back in the day (before I even had a PSX). Back then everyone said that the plastic rail was sagging due to heat instead of wear. Typical end-user solution was to flip the entire system upside-down. :) I’ve seen sooo many old PlayStations with this problem!
Glad I stumbled across your video. I was messing with a faulty 1001 model and got it to work much more reliably thanks to this video. Still, FMV skips a bit on some games, but its much better than before.
Oh god, adjusting these damn things is such a royal pain in the ass and was such a waste of my time and also the reason why i had anger issues. Imagine the torture and pain i went through in the past 7 years (2017-2024) with all these damn 1001 models i went through and causing an argument with a TH-camr named Philip McFee on Facebook Messenger because i totally lost my cool as i was getting frustrated with my 1001 consoles when i been adjusting the freaking BIAS and GAIN pots for hours and hours and getting nowhere even with new lasers and i tossed them out of frustration because almost EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. i've used would also randomly spin too fast for no reason as well. 🤦♂️ And i used to be a dumbass back in 2017-2020 and used to claim the CPUs in these SCPH-1001's go bad overtime and fail. Just like on the early SHVC-CPU-01 SNES consoles where their CPU/PPU chips fail often. But no, then i found out the capacitors tend to fail too. Do you think recapping might help and stuff? I still remember one day coming home from school back in April 2017 crying in P.E class not doing anything and got home early from school and i was in my room crying about how i miss my PS1 consoles and i was totally breaking down crying as i was totally devastated when i stupidly smashed 2 SCPH-1001's i gotten from a Florida Swap Meet because i was having trouble getting Spin Jam to load and no amount of BIAS/GAIN adjusting was helping and after one failure too many, I screamed along with the lines of "Fuck this fucking model, I can't take it anymore!" And then on May 2017, My family went to a trip to Saint Louis and we went to a game store called Slackers and i saw a SCPH-5501 for sale for $30 bucks and my parents just walked out of the store without ever buying me the system and then eventually i listened to Spider-Man 3 Sandman Confesses music and i started bawling my eyes out totally thinking what i've done. And then i forgotten all about it and just took a break from 1001 models and just used different models and stuff until 4 years later in November 2021, I gotten a SCPH-1001 from July 1995 in perfect shape with a dead laser and i swapped the laser from a 9001 and i finally was i so happy to have a 1001 that finally worked right. So that's my story with SCPH-1001 troubles and stuff.
little confused about the GAIN voltage, whenever i go to measure it, it's always higher or lower then 1.82-1.85, and turning the GAIN trimpot does nothing
I start off with an audio CD. Then once I can play an audio CD without skipping I move onto a game. I have three of these older 1001 models and I was able to get them all to work. I've also had better luck setting the laser voltage to 12.0 mili volts.
Pretty nice video :)! I recently bought my eighth SCPH -1002 and the optical model is KSM - 440AAM . Obviously it doesn't worked well but it was enough to put a metal thickness of 0.15mm and it work properly with a low F.BIAS level ( 1.41v / F.GAIN 1.78) The ACM is metal instead , but surely will have the laser diode a bit ' worn , in fact you should put a KSM - 440BAM of SCPH - 102 . If you hold the ACM , however , you should put the grease in the gears and lubricate the motor spindle and sled motor( MABUCHI RF - 300A ) with the WD - 40. In addition , they suggest , calibrate the F.GAIN when the machine is turned off . And then try the disc ^^ But it seems to me that you did a good job and I'm happy for you, man : D ! P.S Colin McRae Rally is a wonderful game !
My laser gets stuck up top near the disc spindle. I tried applying some grease to the rails and gears and that helped a little. When I wanted to make some adjustments I broke off the socket for the spindle and laser on the motherboard. I guess this ancient devices are really delicate. I hope I can solder it back on.
Very interesting Hans. Adjusting these lasers is a royal pain in the ass. I have had mixed results with setting them up to the supposed correct settings. Most of the time it works but sometimes, you have to adjust things a little more or less to get it to work. It can greatly depend on the quality of the burn on the backup cd too. It's easy to get them set up to work with retail discs but backups is a whole different story. I never looked at the wear on the plastic sliders, I just made sure they were well greased. Cool stuff buddy :)
+StigsWorld yep. It seemed that by tweeking the bias a little (for me 1.63V was better than 1.7V (or 0V if using VC as ground), but then again I wonder if it all was just coincidence because I have worn out sliders. An idea: If gravity helps the unit while the console is tipped on its side, how about a rubber band ? I'll try it later today. Need sleep :) I saw a video a couple of months ago that you made about burning on different computers and the games working on .. dreamcast (i think?).. For me now, the burned disks work as good as the original ones. If I flip the console on its side, all the games load every time.
the scph 1001 is an unreliable piece of garbage that constantly needs servicing, you are better off just getting a newer playstation like a 7001 or 9001
well dont know if is garbage beacuase this model did had some advantages and extra features better motherboard.parts on it.... the other later revision got cheaper.. the only down side of 1000 series is the laser unit.. this was the launch model .and was not cheap at 299.00
most ps1 models had picky lens dont matter what model beacuase sony use cheap parts lasers on most consoles .to cut down the price the sega saturn had very good laser units builts on rarely you see them go out
I found this same Unit in a Canadian thrift store, the laser did not spin. I just measured the ohms on the pots on the laser ribbon and it was measuring 456 ohms, I adjusted the pot to 820 or so and now its working perfectly. I didn't do anything with those two pots on the board and I didn't measure the volts. Confused why you would need to do all this.
Excuse me, would I be able to have a copy of the manual you are using? I have the exact same model of PlayStation, and I'm attempting to set the GAIN and BIAS to default settings and install a replacement laser. I just need to know what the factory default values are for each? I'm sure I could browse the internet for the manual, but I'm not positive WHICH MANUAL has the information I need in it. I would very much appreciate it if you could direct me to the manual, or would be able to provide me with a copy. Thank you.
Hi i just replaced my laser drive i have a SCPH-1002 model With a Brand new Laser, when i load a Music CD it starts to spin for about 20 to 30 Seconds and then it stops, do you no whats wrong Thanks Jos
I've got a Playstation One that wont read any disc. A pop up message come up, and says that I need to use an Playstation disc. I tried the laser on another console, and it worked fine. So what can the problem maybe be?
I have scph 1001 ps1 and if I pushed the small thing in the corner, the laser works and reads the disc, but if I stopped pushing it, it stopped reading it! So what should I do for this ? Does it need a new laser ? Thanks
@@palkop907 Yeah .. I don't know what happened to my console ! It was working ok before .. Now.. I had to put a tissue or tiny ball before closing the disc tray then I can see it works ...

Hey, nice video. I want to know when you press the 'lid close button' with your finger at 4:32 where you show a close up of the lens going up and down, the spindle motor doesn't spin. I'm having the same issue with my 1002 unit; it's not spinning. however later down the video when you insert cds your unit is spinning the cds. i've looked at other videos and with the lid open with no cd, when they press the lid button, the laser moves up and down along with the motor spinning momentarily as well. tell me what i'm missing here. It's an old unit which was stowed away and i'm trying to put back life into it for listening audio... don't know if i'm gullible or not but it's worth experiencing the hype first hand. :) btw the laser unit on my says KSM-440ACM
+Muhammad Ali Qammar Thanks. Maybe this spinning/not spinning behaviour is different from revision to revision. I would say that it is normal behaviour for it to only spin if the laser is reflected from a disk and the lid switch is closed. Do you get a bootup screen? Try re-plugging all the connectors and flex cable..
+bwack well I got the cds to spin by bumping the sensitivity to 19mV. originally it was at 12.5mV so following dog breath. de manual I lowered it to 11.4v but that didn't help either. so at 19mV I can play.any audio cd now. the beast is up and running. thanks for replying quickly :)

A ps1 I have works, but only if you turn it upside down
Then it is probably a worn out rail guide, or you can try regrease it. Usually these optical units needs to be replaced.
