Lady Gaga's producer reveals his secrets

  • RedOne may not be a name you've heard of but he's behind some of the biggest tracks of the last 12 months.
He's worked with Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Shakira, and now Newsbeat's very own entertainment reporter Natalie Jamieson.
Normally based in the US, the top producer has been over in the UK recording tracks with Kylie and Alexandra Burke.
Newsbeat went down to the London studios where he's been working to challenge him to create a song just for us, from scratch.
Our dedicated reporter filled Kylie's (very small) boots, got behind the mic and laid down the vocals to what RedOne has described as "a definite hit".

IF you knew the work of this producer just a little bit, you would know he works on a common room and uses a Macbook Pro with Logic, a good audio interface, good speakers and a simple MIDI keyboard (as almost all eletronic music producers)
BUT... he is on BBC, so of course it's better to record for a BIG TV channel in a BIG STUDIO ROOM!
And for your information, when it comes to MIXING, the mixing engenier will use the desk and other hardwares (Eqs, compressors and so on) you see in this video.

I would imagine the vocal has undergone multiband compression . consequentially phasing has to be added to help inside the stereo spread...it can sound exaggerated as it is being picked up on a microphone inside the control room. perhaps get a copy of this song and listen through mono to help find the phasing as it would dull within a mono listening field.

First of all, don't assume. No, I don't love hip-hop, but I have become aware of electronic music and have grown to like it. My roots lie in the rock and heavy metal genres. And don't assume that because I can defend this music that I don't appreciate other genres such as jazz, blues, and country. I very much do. Also, I can't believe you could be so ignorant as to say once again that this is not music, even after i gave you two clear definitions.

Hate to break it to you bro, for most samples (like the ones this guy is using) already sound good on their own. They've been mixed and mastered to stand by themselves. Ontop of this we then lay witness to kick on 1/2/3/4, claps on 2/4, and a "percussive sound" on the downs of 1/2/3/4 and ups of 2 and 4.
To break it down for you, the secrets of this guys engineering is to use samples because you can't go wrong.
The average Joe could do this, average joe doesn't have a supporting label though.

Instead of the masses embracing one genre, do something different, unfortunately because music of any genre becomes popular it loses it's edge and thus we continue to reinvent the wheel. Some of the greatest music "electronic" music I mean comes from the 80s and yet we continue to use it because it sounds good and it should be used. Now we have home musicians who invent something new and have an influence from many genres but there is more original ideas coming from the mass of home musicians.

They squeezed in probably about an hour of studio time into a 4-minute video clip.
There is more to electronic music than just placing a "kick, clap, percussion."
The drums and percussions must be tuned into the key of the song(or else the song sounds "off"). The synths need special effects or else they sound "dry," which is similar to the effects that they put on an electric guitar through the guitar pedals(chorus, vibrato, distortion, ect). The drums, bass synths, lead synths, fills and pads need to be EQ'd just like they would EQ a rock song, without EQ'ing some of the high frequencies become unhearable and the low frequencies might be too crowded and the final mix will sound muddy. Then they need to mix and master, each track needs to be set to the appropriate volume, and need the appropriate sounds of reverb and echo, along with trying to make sure that each element his its own "space" within the frequencies.
RedOne makes synthpop sounds easy to produce, but if you try to produce a synthpop track let me know how that goes.
Adding rhythm with a guitar is arguably easier than trying to add rythm to a fully synthpop song, which is why I respect electronic producers. That is why at 1:32 you hear a lead synth, because that synth pad doesn't have rhythm, so they add in rythm by having the lead synth over a synth pad. It is like the equivalent of adding a lead guitar over a guitar that is only strummed once(meaning no up and down strokes).

He did an absolutely brilliant job on pitch correcting & effecting the vocals in this video, she went from sounding so unprofessional to brilliant - and believe me, anyone who's actually used pitch correction plugins will knows that that's a lot harder than the 'one click of a button' myth.
A lot of people say most people who know their way round a DAW could make these kind of beats, and they're probably right, but I guess it's his ability to process vocals so well that's got him so successful.

@Michael55443 It's easy to make, you just have to market it...that's where you need to know what you're doing. Get on a record label with a publicity department that can get your music heard and sold...that's where you have to be marketable...and it is the way you look that makes you marketable. It hasn't been about the music for decades

-.- It can be autotune .. u dont have to make t pain effect to use autotune in the right way u can use it to pitch correction with out crazy robot vocals and keep your vocals sounds natural.. but I know everybody uses autotune to make the effect and melodyne to make the "magic"

Good memories about this video, in 2010 I recently knew about RedOne. Now 12 years later he produced all songs of WC22 in Qatar, what a legend.
