- This is the first in a two part series on making ash glaze using nothing more than bar B Q brickets and clay. The ash glaze was fired to cone 6. The second video will be on improvements to the glaze (I hope)! Suggestion and comments are always welcome, just be adult and considerate. Meshes used were 100, 120 and 130. You can use corser of finer if you want to.

Hello l have a old backyard furnace l am thinking to make it into a wood fired pottery kiln.. l am guessing the highest temperature would be glowing Orange?
Would these glazes work? Or ls the temperature too low ?

It's difficult to say. You would need some type of thermocuple to read the inside temps. They would need to be somewhere around cone 6. With a wood fired kiln , experimentation will be the key.
50 mesh is finer than 20 mesh, the higher mesh the smaller opening in the sieve. Mesh counts the number of gaps in a square inch...
Water volume is very important, you should weight the water also.
You forgot to mention the cone and atmosphere you are using.
I assume you are using cone 6 oxidation. To add gloss add 40 percent by weight a frit 3124 or 3195 or experiment with a flux like a feldspar.
Assaf, thanks for the comment, but I think it was pretty clear that I got confused about the mesh. At 75 things like that happen! You are right about the water, but as I stated, this was all about a quick experiment and It was easier (and more interesting) to just go with whatever water made the materials suspend for use. I try to keep these video short and as simple as possible and that is hard to do. If I was to try to make a "standard" glaze I would pay more attention to the amount of silica and feldspar I used. Sounded more like he was expressing microns than mesh. Some filters use this terminology

No I have not, but it sounds promising.
Would the ash glaze be food safe?
I have never heard anyone say, but mine is fired to cone 6 so I would think that it would be OK.

is this high fire stoneware clay?
I think it is considered mid fire. I usually fire to cone 6 when playing around with the ash glaze.
How come everyone on you tube has to turn a ten minute video into a twenty minute video with excess verbiage?
I don't knoe Martin. I guess it has to do the the projected 15 minutes of fame everyone is supposed to get.....that and the loud mouthed friend who will never let you finish a sentenance is not present to moderate ones out put....what do you think?
