in my heart miles goes off to london and lives his best bisexual life and discovers even more about himself, finds himself a good guy or girl, and just grows as a human being away from his past

@@SnapszDuhh He was super shallow and judgy his entire run on the show and would get super upset if anyone judged him. He clung to Maya after Tori moved away and expected her to wait on him hand and foot and she tried to and got in trouble with their french teacher, made enemies with Zoey, and fought with Miles all for him and he still expected HER to apologize for not being enough, meanwhile he never offered her anything. After Paris he was still friends with Zoey despite how rude she was and ditched Maya almost entirely by the end of the 13th season because she SAVED HIM FROM A PEDOPHILE! Then he had the nerve to be pissed at her because Miles fell back in love with her despite her not even DOING ANYTHING. He was a TERRIBLE friend to her.

I've noticed most people that hate this relationship are girls, especially girls that shipped maya with miles. They always say things like miles and tristan "didnt make sense" and that their relationship "wasnt relatable". Thats because their relationship and characters werent meant to be relatable to straight girls. It was meant to be relatable to young queer boys and it was the single-most relatable male queer relationship in the entire franchise. As a gay male, their relationship moved me unlike any other. Almost every queer boy has a similar story to miles and/or tristan. Whether it be from an unrequited crush on a straight friend or your first love, it really speaks to gay/bi boys. Its okay if you preferred a different ship because you didn't relate to them but to act like their relationship was somehow objectively awful is just ignorant and, honestly, comes across as casual homophobia in a lot of cases and just a complete misunderstanding of their characters/storylines. And I say casual because I don't think that these girls mean to be homophobic but some of their criticisms come from a place of ignorance.
For instance, the miles and tristan relationship does NOT come out of nowhere. It just feels that way to people that arent queer males. Miles and Tristan's story is literally one of the most common first love stories of queer boys. Gay boy becomes friends with assumed "straight" boy (bonus points if that straight boy is dating the gay boys female friend). Gay boy develops unrequited crush on said "straight" boy. Gay boy hides feelings and settles for friendship. Gay boy and "straight" boy get closer and closer before the chemistry between them becomes undeniable (bonus points if this happens post-breakup with female friend.) While it wasn't 100% clear until Thunderstruck, thats by design because its never totally clear to either boy until it happens. But once it does happen, it all makes sense in hindsight. I was convinced they would end up together at some point from the paris episodes, even after miles and maya got together.
This is seriously the most misunderstood relationship in all of degrassi. Miles himself is one of the most misunderstood characters individually as a victim of parental abuse with substance abuse issues and self-identity problems. Their relationship in next class seasons 2-4 is actually possibly the healthiest relationship in that series.
One last thing: The critcism about the miles-lola fling is the most overblown critique also. Miles was being told that Tristan may never wake back up and that he should get back to living his life. He had an emotional breakdown and trauma-bonded with Lola. He broke things off with her as soon as Tristan woke up and came clean to Tristan about it then stood by his side as he recovered. I could literally go on and on about this subject but the criticism just again comes from a place of judgemental ignorance.
It feels like you wanted the show to spell out every aspect of miles character with a neon billboard but thats not how the show ever does it. The cast is too big and they only get 4 or 5 "school years" to tell all these complex stories. In all actuality, the subtleties of Miles' character and his relationship with Tristan is masterful but again, I'd have to make a 45 minute video of my own to lay it all out. Like I said, its okay if you dont relate to them or preferred other ships but you're just objectively wrong with most of your critiques.

@@PlayfulFruitLPer tristan has his moments of good and bad, much like anyone else on the show. Is he my favorite character? No. Is he annoying and sometimes incredibly problematic? Yes. But I guess as an adult now, I can empathize with him in ways that I didn't at a younger age.

I’m saying this as a gay man myself, Tristan and Miles have to be one of the worst gay relationships I’ve seen in any form of media. Tristan specifically has to be one of the most unlikable, self centered, toxic characters on the show, and how he treats his friends like Maya and Zoe were unacceptable and should have been called out more (remember when he grabbed Zoe’s arm and lifted up her sleeve in a populated hallway when he knew she was self harming, and then proceeded to say she was just looking for attention?).
I’m all for characters having flaws, but Tristan never gets confronted for his awful behavior, and I certainly don’t think his relationship with Miles was what I would have wanted to be seen as “good representation for queer men”. Miles was certainly not a good person in the relationship either, and truth be told I find it disappointing how he never expresses ANY interest in men outside of Tristan during his time on the show. It falls into that horrible bisexual trope of “it’s okay only if it’s with you”.
They’re a bad couple. And Tristan is a terrible character.

@@mal3nko you need to take a step back and realize these are children you're talking about. I can go back and forth with you all day about the good things tristan did vs the bad but it's irrelevant. Nothing Tristan did was horrific, he was just annoying and toxic like literally 90% of the characters on the show because they are teenagers! Miles' story of sexual ambiguity and ultimately his bisexual awakening/acceptance was a story that hadn't really been told well in media. Tristan struggled with insecurity and loneliness which caused him to act out at times, an EXTREMELY common struggle for young and "out" gay teens back in the period the show was airing. Miles and Tristans relationship made many young gay men feel seen, as their type of romance wasn't all that common in movies and TV. It's okay to dislike characters and to call them out for bad behavior but don't lose sight of the actual message by getting caught up in the drama of it all. Just because you can't appreciate the nuance does not make them bad characters. When fans just absolute bash characters like tristan as if he's just as bad as Luke (and while simulatenously praising fan-favorite but infinitely more toxic characters like Eli), it just speaks to how they fundamentally misunderstand the characters and the message of the show. Carry on, you're welcome to feel however you do about them. But it's just plain silly to call them the "worst gay relationship" when we have, in just this show alone, tristan-yates(pedo anybody), Marco-Dylan(may have done more to set back gay relationships than DOMA) or Riley-Zane(talk about a character in Zane that the show totally presents the exact wrong way to handle a closeted friend as the correct righteous way)...and to be clear, the DOMA comment was an obvious hyperbole. My point is you're literally picking and choosing the ones you dislike and acting like they are somehow worse than the others that you do like and they just aren't.

I just didn't like the biphobia on Tristan's end and those out of character moments for Miles where he told Tristan that he keeps treating him like dirt and he keeps coming back to him (I blame the writing for that one though).
I don't know if they made it clear but it seemed like after Miles read Tristan his poem that he finally understood his bisexuality or not, but they never clarified why Tristan was like that to begin with and what snapped him out of it (if he ever did).
However, I do like their dynamics after the crash because they were more attentive towards each other, considering the other's feelings and ambitions, and have matured a lot after their rocky relationship.

I used to like the Tristan and Miles pairing but year's later after looking back on the relationship I realized that these two were not good together. I always liked Miles but as for Tristan I liked him season's 11 and 12 but season 13 and onwards he became very unlikeable to me. I'm glad they didn't end up together they weren't in a good relationship and it always seemed like Miles just didn't try as hard as Tristan did to make things work. I really don't like how the writers always failed at making a good gay relationship

I rarely revisit the Degrassi fandom these days but I was really excited to see this video! I know this ship had fans on Tumblr while the show was airing but the relationship seems to be almost universally hated now. You put things into words so perfectly with your points about the writers seeming like they were relying on off screen scenes and none of their emotional moments feeling earned. I’m a big Miles fan, so I can’t say I entirely agree with your analysis of his character, although it gave me stuff to think more about and I agree he definitely did treat Tristan poorly in s14. The only criticism I have is I was really hoping to hear more about Tristan’s faults in the relationship too because I think that’s a MAJOR reasons most fans don’t like this pairing. I was hoping the video would discuss more on Tristan’s biphobia, the random shaming (calling Miles a man whore, for starters), pushing Miles (an abuse survivor) into a wall in 1.08, and Tristan never seeming to think he’s ever in the wrong with any of his relationships during Next Class. I think a lot of the reason it’s so difficult to buy Miles’ anguish during the coma plot is that Tristan didn’t have many redeeming qualities in the first place. I would definitely watch a part 2 of this, especially if it discussed more of Tristan’s faults, why on earth Miles also kept going back to the relationship, and how Next Class in particular kept trying to paint Tristan as the love of Miles’ life without actually ever showing it. I’m a huge Miles/Lola fan so I would definitely watch a video on them too if you ship! Thanks for making this!

Honestly, the biggest inconsistency I would love to have seen explored is how someone as sweet and accepting as Tristan's mom can turn out someone like Owen. Honestly, the show could have tied together Owens homophobia to Tristan's abandonment issues.
The only somewhat invisible line I can see is that Owen's treatment of gay people in general has inadvertently led to Tristan accepting love kernels from anyone regardless of how healthy it is, and between Yates and his heart attack his mother became more attentive and aware. His arc could have been a beautiful portrayal of someone learning to love themselves, but he wound up being something of a tragic figure.

32:01 Tristan is literally that gay fem boy that wants a relationship with a straight acting man that's always confused 😕, that he just keeps putting up with it. in hopes that he finally get picked by the guy instead of just finding someone who will love him. It's sad but it's a reality for some.

And I know that he ended up working on his anger issues... but they just didn't click together to me. Zane deserved someone better and Riley needed someone who understood why he couldn't come out just yet or just someone willing to wait for him until he went to college

This relationship was the definition of EverybodySucksHere but there was room for both of them to become better people without them being in a relationship. I like Miles as a character and wish he was given better than Tristan. Miles and Lola was a much better pairing than Miles and Tristan. Tristan was quite frankly a sucky person who suffered from Main Character Syndrome when no one bought into that. Not saying Miles was perfect but he might've been a better person than Tristan.
