I was in the Air Force with a guy from Americus. He had a very good AF career and his story was pretty much he joined the AF as a kid to get away from Americus, which he always spoke of disparagingly. Looks better than he used to describe it. Shoeless Joe was kicked out of baseball for being involved in the Black Sox scandal involving the fixing of the World Series in 1919. He was from the same Mill Village in Greenville SC that my mother was from. A younger brother of his was a neighbor when I was growing up. A niece of his was my babysitter when I was around 5.

I grew up on Americus. Left in '84. It was not that bad then. But the last 15 years gone down. The flood we had and then the tornado came through. They both pretty much destroyed a lot. 3 major factories left after the tornado. So the majority of the income base left. So poverty got worse. I lotta people did leave cause no income and crime was the only thing that grew 😢

In this video you're on the (South)Seaboard side of town. The plantation style houses at the town, only had white population. But yes Downtown is beautiful. They're trying to work it back up

Lots of African American history in Americus that was not in your video . Americus played a big part in the civil rights movement Dr King was jailed there Booker T Washington spoke at the Americus Institute a black trade school built in the 1800s.

My grandma and her sisters have the key to Americus for being a part of that movement.

College towns seem to have a lot of crime. All those students partying and fighting! It looks really nice to me! I live in NYC, in midtown Manhattan, so that looks like Central Park to me!

Joe Jackson, who played for the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox in the 1910s, was banned from baseball in 1920 because he and seven other White Sox players conspired to throw the 1919 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds knew nothing about this and thought they had won fair and square. His nickname Shoeless dates from his youth, when he apparently took his spikes off for a moment and then had to go to bat without them.
