For the english speakers: The lake was previously the axolotls' main habitat. It became too dangerous over the years, so that's why they're being raised outside of the lake. Since the number of axolotls was so low, the guy came up with a way to raise them efficiently, but he doesn't have enough resources to raise them all properly. Mind you, this is not a random lake, this is Lake Xochimilco, the last native habitat of the axolotl. It's embarrassing that the government doesn't supply equipment to such an important place in the world. In the video the guy makes it clear he needs help to build a better place for the axolotls. He also makes it pretty clear that they're supposed to be in the water and admits a lot of them die due to the circumstances. He expected organizations to help him out, but by the time this video was posted it looked like things weren't moving too smoothly. This is not mentioned, but the government has done nothing but worsen the situation by expressing interest in urbanizing the area. Their projects have been halted not once but twice by the people who care about the ecosystem, so the best the guy can do is to maintain as many axolotls as he can alive, pretty much from his own pocket, making campaigns and pretty much hoping for the best. Please don't be harsh on him; despite the condition of the axolotls, which is clearly miserable, I don't think he deserves the hate he gets. In situations like these, the line that divides doing good from doing bad becomes much harder to differentiate. It's our duty to inform ourselves before making accusations, and more importantly, it's better to raise awareness about a hard situation rather than searching for culprits.

El problema es que pues solo queda Xochimilco como cuerpo de agua dulce, Chalco lo secaron, y secar Texcoco, Zumpango y Xaltocán (a pesar de que fueran de agua salada) empeoraron el problema de la extinción de los mantos freáticos que mantenían un poco hidratados los cuerpos de agua dulce.

Se escucha super padre, hace como dos años o tres descubrí que existía esta especie y me enamore sobre todo por que es mexicana y también busque como podría ayudar a preservar la especie pero por nuestra ubicación (Tijuana) es difícil que sobrevivan y se reproduzcan, no tenemos el ambiente ideal para lograrlo, de ser así ya tendríamos unos cuantos en nuestros mantos acuíferos pero lamentablemente los tenemos mega contaminados y en realidad sería imposible sobrevivir en un ambiente como este, el río Tijuana y el Alamar son pura basura. El problema es que en gran parte de Xochimilco en las zonas que eras chinamperas construyeron casas (cosa que está prohibida) y toda las aguas negras llegan al lago.

Nope, the man is an specialist, he knows what he is doing. He is from Xochimilco where the axolotls are from, and people there said that before, axolotls used to roam outside the water by themselves. They can be outside the water but by little time. The "fully aquatic creatures" that you know are comercial, these ones are different. I think that a specialist whose whole family dedicated to preserve a species and studied knows what he is doing.

Ntp que además del sistema de respiración branquial tienen el pulmonar y si suelen salir a tierra, incluso tener una respiración optativa según su conveniencia.
Si, tienen 4 sistemas de respiración, pero se supone es de hábitos acuáticos y sale a la superficie por oxígeno más sin embargo supongo que fuera de el agua como en el vídeo reduce su movimiento quedando así más expuesto, lo cual es distinto que estar en agua donde puede nadar y ocultarse, además debido a su piel no puede estar al 100% fuera de el agua

For all of you who are lost of how this supposed fish can be walking on land: They are amphibians... something strange happens in this species and they reach sexual maturity without reaching adulthood. So, they never have to be 100% land animals like toads or frogs.
It is cruel to have it on land. The axolotl only has rudimentary lungs and should not be taken out of the water as it causes extreme stress. Amphibian does not mean they can live both in water and on land, though that is a trait that many amphibians do possess.
As someone who has TWO axolotls, this is abuse at its finest. Do not do this to axolotls. They can not breath out of water at all. This is hurting them all. Dont just believe because they own axolotls that they are correct.

Yea exactly, if their out of the water for enough time their skin go red and loses its slimy texture, and if it’s not treated fast enough they die. I think they thought it was ok because their was some water on the grass, but most of their skin was out, Axolotls must be completely in water. I hope the little fellas are doing ok, I really hope that putting them on grass was a one time thing for a photoshoot (this doesn’t make it ok though) and that they live in tanks where they are properly cared for

Se escucha super padre, hace como dos años o tres descubrí que existía esta especie y me enamore sobre todo por que es mexicana y también busque como podría ayudar a preservar la especie pero por nuestra ubicación (Tijuana) es difícil que sobrevivan y se reproduzcan, no tenemos el ambiente ideal para lograrlo, de ser así ya tendríamos unos cuantos en nuestros mantos acuíferos pero lamentablemente los tenemos mega contaminados y en realidad sería imposible sobrevivir en un ambiente como este, el río Tijuana y el Alamar son pura basura. Tache para nosotros :(

Todo lo que se tiene que hacer Es de dejar de hechar basura al lago, y plantar mas arboles..... En Europa habia un mega lago que su agua era negra de tanta contaminacion sin embargo la gente decidio cambiarlo dejando de hechar basura y plantando miles de arboles y en tan solo 2 años el agua era cristalina, empezaron a ver peces y mas........ Recuerden que los arboles limpian todo el aire, el agua, la tierra, etc

El problema es que en gran parte de Xochimilco en las zonas que eras chinamperas construyeron casas (cosa que está prohibida) y toda las aguas negras llegan al lago.
Lo malo es que no es un lago... Sino toda una red de canales.

Son anfibios, tienen pulmones y branquias pero si son frecuentemente expuestos al aire tienen la capacidad de metamorfosearse en salamandras, pero si los scans nada más así y no los regresas al agua en varias horas si pueden llegar a morir debido a la perdida de humedad en su piel

I think that a specialist whose whole family dedicated to preserve a species and studied knows what he is doing.

Ntp que además del sistema de respiración branquial tienen el pulmonar y si suelen salir a tierra, incluso tener una respiración optativa según su conveniencia.
Si, tienen 4 sistemas de respiración, pero se supone es de hábitos acuáticos y sale a la superficie por oxígeno más sin embargo supongo que fuera de el agua como en el vídeo reduce su movimiento quedando así más expuesto, lo cual es distinto que estar en agua donde puede nadar y ocultarse, además debido a su piel no puede estar al 100% fuera de el agua

They are amphibians... something strange happens in this species and they reach sexual maturity without reaching adulthood.
So, they never have to be 100% land animals like toads or frogs.
It is cruel to have it on land. The axolotl only has rudimentary lungs and should not be taken out of the water as it causes extreme stress. Amphibian does not mean they can live both in water and on land, though that is a trait that many amphibians do possess.
As someone who has TWO axolotls, this is abuse at its finest. Do not do this to axolotls. They can not breath out of water at all. This is hurting them all. Dont just believe because they own axolotls that they are correct.

Yea exactly, if their out of the water for enough time their skin go red and loses its slimy texture, and if it’s not treated fast enough they die. I think they thought it was ok because their was some water on the grass, but most of their skin was out, Axolotls must be completely in water. I hope the little fellas are doing ok, I really hope that putting them on grass was a one time thing for a photoshoot (this doesn’t make it ok though) and that they live in tanks where they are properly cared for

@@wavvytrillest8808 The water of Xochimilco has that color because of the algae and they need to grow in that environment for survival. The government don't give them more space and they are raising them until the grow up so they won't be eaten by fishes than some asshole introduced to Xochimilco.

He is raising them until the grow up so they won't be eaten by some fishes some asshole introduced on the area . They are endangered for many reasons , one of them , it's selling Axolotols to foreigners as pets, so if you have them as pets , don't even have the right to attack this men , your situation it's as awful as if you have a Mexican wolf as your dog . And also , if you are not satisfied with his methods and the space they have, you can go to Xochimilco and help , or give them the money that they need :D .... oh wait you are just commenting from ingnorance , privilege and false altruism , well then .... please shut up ^^ and have a good day.

i ve never seen axolotls and i dont know what they do but i watched it because it made me thing how fucking amazing is planet earth.
Idk what they do too. But they eat small crustaceans, insect larvae, worms, slugs, snails, worms, tadpoles and some fish.
It's sad that less and less people care for these creatures. They are so cute!
