    I actually prefer living in the UK even though I am from Portugal. I don't have a job like yours, just a normal 9 to 5 but with amazing flexibility and work/life balance and much better pay than what I'd ever get in Portugal. All my friends back home can't afford to buy a house (I can't afford one here in the UK either 😂), but the majority also have terrible jobs that don't offer as much work/life balance or proper pay to even rent a place. I'm talking about renting a place in the big cities like Lisbon or Porto, but unfortunately that's where we need to live in order to find work. A place like Algarve, or an island like Madeira, is much cheaper to rent or buy house, but then you can't find a proper job around those areas. Not to mention the country is unable to help any of the young people with proper initiatives. Basically it feels like everywhere you go there will be issues in one way or another. For your situation and lifestyle, I can see how a place like Algarve would be beneficial, but for me with an office work that would provide all the perks I currently get in my job in the UK, living in Portugal is a pipe dream. Maybe when I retire I'll be able to finally return.

    One way to enjoy your life more is to simplify it, stop the materialism, the comparison, the constant media, constant opinions from all sides. Move away from your computer/phone and go out into the natural world because there is so much to be learnt from this.

    Many people in Canada especially in the major cities & surrounding areas are truly struggling financially. The number of people going to food banks has skyrocketed. Most can’t afford the sky high rent prices or mortgage so they end up moving back in with their parents or go to somewhere super far. It’s been quite sad to see so many tents everywhere as so many have become homeless (we have a huge shortage of shelters). I don’t know what the solution would be.

    We are currently looking to move overseas due to all of the reasons you have outlined. Portugal also being one of our options.
    We have two young boys, aged 2 & 4. Although we are very proud to be British and we love our country, it’s heartbreaking watching it being destroyed in front of our very eyes. Punished if you are even the slightest bit successful, yet unpunished for committing serious crimes.

    Don't ever move to Italy, you would hate the burocracy and the inefficiencies in the system and in everyday life. Yes everything is cheaper here than in the UK and the weather is beautiful but life is overall so complicated and terribly disorganized. I hope Portugal is better from this point of view.

    • @martauk
      @martauk 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A appreciate your comment on bureaucracy, I would agree with that. Although, what Italy takes from you (with its stresses, low wages and complicated system) it gives back in nature, food, culture, history, friendliness of its people, weather... Now, in the UK it might be easy to pay your bills, open bank accounts, obtain some personal documents, etc but it certainly doesn't feel like it's giving back that much. A pub lunch - like someone else said in a comment - is just not enough! With the usual traffic, it takes on average 2 hours to drive out of South London to the coast to go and breathe a little fresh air (train prices are ridiculous!). Central London has become so very expensive, even a simple dinner out can cost you £50 pp (close to NYC prices), trains are buggered, strike after strike and prices keep going up and even when you manage to leave London and venture further afield, you're surrounded by the same chains of restaurant, dying pubs, traffic... it did not used to be like this but it is now.
      When I moved to the UK in 2006 - when young, low-paid foreigners were still very welcome - this was a different country, full of possibilities and opportunities. It's fast becoming more and more similar to Italy when it comes to how stressful and frustrating every day life is. But Italy GIVES BACK.

      @0o0TheQueenBee0o0 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@martauk I agree with your points, I am Italian (with an english mother) and have always lived in Italy and I do love it here. However I think that many things that Steph says he is frustrated with, are actually worse over here. The only thing that pulls him apart from us Italians is that he will have a high income while living in a cheaper country which makes his situation sort of unique. Here in Italy the wages are actually going down so eating out has become extremely expensive also for us! the only reason I would never live in UK is the weather. I give you that. get ready for extreme heat in the summer though! :-D

      This is just my opinion but, the majority of people in the U.K. regardless of age, can hardly afford the cost of living and the way in which it has dramatically increased in the last few years. Young people cannot afford rent, let alone houses. Those that sacrifice things to own a house cannot afford to do anything other than pay their bills. The rate of earnings has not increased anywhere in line with inflation, most households are losing 10% of income per year for the last few years - and this includes doctors, nurses, teachers while execs at energy and water companies take bonuses . Our basic utilities like water and electricity and the council tax that is referred to in the video have gone up by £100's per year in the last few years, this is due to systemic government failings. Our precious resources such as the NHS & schools are suffering. The problem is UK wide and near on every household besides the 1% is struggling regardless of circumstance. Oh and it rains all the bloody time 😂 sorry that was so long, didn't realise how hard it would be to explain after I started. I think this is what Stef is referring to

This year I’ve found my self taking a step back from mainstream and social media (and all the common narratives and ideas floating about). This is about the price we will sell our 2,300 sq ft home; but where our 3% mortgage rate is we can't afford the 7% that is being offered now. Be grateful you are young enough to have choices. I'm asking myself this, honestly - so this is NOT shade or anything - but sometimes I wonder if changing one's perspective can change your life. I'm beginning to realize that NOWHERE is perfect. I have two places to call home - one in Los Angeles and one in Vorarlberg, Austria. One might say one is 'better than the other for THIS reason' . However, going back and forth, it's like apple-picking .. I can complain that one place doesn't offer one particular thing and the other does, however, the one place is better in the other way. Often people will ask me 'why here? Why not there? Which do you like better?' and honestly, I answer 'I like them both equally for different reasons' and I think maybe that might be the case here with you? I don't know - just food for thought. Often times the scramble is the excitement, the complaint is the driving force and then you find out that the grass isn't always greener. But! Sometimes it IS!!!
    Believe me, the US is NOTHING like it was growing up in the 70s, 80s, 90s. I don't even recognize the culture anymore, the hostility on the roads, the divide among everyone, actually. But here in the EU, it's sort of a whole other weird vibe too....
    Here's to all of us somehow finding a place. I just figure 'home' is where I close my front door behind me and I'm with the family and the doggos.
    Keeping up alongside you guys. xoxo

Mass immigration from countries that do not have the same values leading to an increase in knife crime, rapes and sexual assaults and the loss of our culture. If you had not been disappointed in the election you would be in the exact same situation that Great Britain is in and why the Michalak family must leave their home in search of a better place that America will soon return to!!

      Thing is we can't all leave now because of Brexit. I'm Scottish but we have no say in anything . I'm fed up of the part the UK is playing just now in the Middle East. I've never felt more ashamed of being British, so I now tell people I'm Scottish

    Wish you had used your platform to speak up about the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. We all have a

      It makes no difference if anyone speaks up about the war in the Middle East. I'm in my mid 50's - growing up watching war reports on the Middle East, wars which have gone on for thousand's of years. The wars are just passed down to the next generation, million's of children and their families have died. The governments in charge do not understand how precious life is

      Netanyahu is 100% to blame. He's an entirely self-serving top tier Illuminati and has made flattening the entire area his mission. FACT! I pray that Trump will refrain from being influenced by his Jewish son in-law, and finally see right through that monster akin to Hitler.
      US funding for Israel HAS TO STOP. Period. Everything I know about him & that mess that he's intentionally created, I learned through Matthew's Messages and MatthewBooks (one word).
