Hi Ken and Thea, I have commented on this video before, but I wanted to say again how much I love it! I've watched it dozens of times, and it always lifts my spirits, especially now in the dead of winter. Thanks for going thru the trouble of creating and posting this!
Thank you so much for letting us know how much you enjoy this video. Your comment put a smile on both of our faces and feedback like this really helps motivate us to keep recording our adventures and sharing them here on TH-cam. We have more coming soon!
Hiking along the Selway River, in past Moose Ranger Station and beyond. Big rattlesnake on trail. Sorry to hear about you being run over by a bus. Good to see you still hiking. Thanks for sharing.
All right I must be on the pack goat TH-cam algorithm now ha ha Ha There’s another guy I’ve been watching for a while down in Utah with his two pack goats his channel is called firebox stove, I am truly enthralled and in love with goats now. But they are like the perfect pack animal because you don’t need to bring anything with you to feed them it’s pretty amazing actually I think I will enjoy your channel thanks
haha recently subbed to the firebox channel and after watchin his latest upload this pops up, my day is complete.. and I have a goat. methinks it has work to do goin forward.. it can carry my bushcraft kit down to the bottom field from now on. livin the dream LOL.
Such a beautiful country side, just love the entourage of your family. the entire area & hosting huts area very nice especially as one can park up for a rest. The idea of pack goats no doubt works darn well love the video & with your animal mates certainly brings meaning to camping with the family.
Some people buy magazines with yachts or sports cars and fantasize about being rich someday. I watch videos of people hiking with pack goats and hope someday...
Well, we did have our two dogs with us, and I also pack a large caliber handgun. But although we've taken many such goat packing trips we've never had any problems (knock on wood) with predatory wildlife trying to take a bite out of our goats.
I love this. I want to share it with my sister who has goats. They just follow her anywhere like your goats. Cracked me up when the pack slipped off the lead goat and he was trying to soldier on and even carry the pack in his mouth. I’d love to do a trip with my sister if she could train her goats to carry packs like that. Those goats of yours are beautiful.
Well, that was a passive-aggressive comment if I ever read one! Yes, rain tarps would have been a good addition. But Ii assure you all panniers were packed and balanced properly. We used a hand-scale to ensure each goat's panniers were within one pound of each other. The panniers were also packed to make sure soft items were on the inside so the goats wouldn't get poked or bruised by hard objects.
You are referring to the incident at min. 7:18. Watch closely and you can see his pannier got flipped when he tried to pass another goat on the narrow trail. His pannier got caught on the front goat's packs, causing it to flip completely over to the other side. It wasn't a "balance" issue as youn allege. The only way to prevent something like that from happening is to secure the two panniers together under the goat's belly; something no one recommends for safety reasons.
Glad you enjoyed the video and my music choices. Awesome music for hiking. Luckily my videos aren't monetized, otherwise I'm sure TH-cam would slap me for copyright infringement.
What? You do understand that the music sound track was added in post-production don't you? I wasn't blaring this music while I was actually out hiking!
Hi Teo. I lived in Germany (Bamberg) many years ago and really loved the beauty of your country. The two big, white/black goats and the black goat are all purebred Alpines. The two black/brown goats are Oberhasli. The others are mixed breeds: Saanen and Nubian.
We raised all our goats by hand starting when they were just a few days old so they are strongly bonded to us. Goats also have a strong herd-bond, so they naturally want to stick together and follow the "herd leader" (us).
Oh yes, goats have a much better disposition than either alpacas or llamas. Being smaller, they can only carry about half the weight (around 50 lbs), but I'd rather heave two goats than one llama.
Australian Cattle Dog (a.k.a. Red Heeler). Awesome dog, but unfortunately we lost her this past summer to old age. We now have a 5 month old male puppy of the same breed.
amazing! Loved it!!! Thanks for sharing your adventure. I am a keen bushwalker and horse rider, but looking at having a play around with some alternative pack animals for something new to do. I had no idea goats could really be pack animals and follow along so nicely. How do you secure them at night?
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed our video. We secure our goats at night with a "high-line". If we left them loose at night they would wander off to feed and - since we live in an area we live in has a lot of predators (wolves, bears, and cougars) there's a good chance one or more of them would be snatched. Keeping them tied close to our tent at night under the watchful eye of our dogs keeps the predators at bay.
@@kenthiasoutdooradventures2294 if in the future you can...buy one or a couple of lamas ( Lama glama )...a camel from Andes..the perfect team...will be what i gonna do when i retired..☺😊
On a gentle trail a mature goat can easily carry 50+ pounds up to 10 miles a day. Some of the bigger goats will carry over 70 pounds even in rough country
Was it a challenge to get the rottie to accept the goats? I like this idea a lot and we will be moving to northern ID soon. All the talk about predators makes me wonder if that was or is a concern for you out there?
Actually it was harder getting the goats to accept the dogs than the other way around. At first the goats would butt the dogs anytime they got close to them. Predators are always a concern when hiking in the Idaho back country so I always carry a sidearm when hiking in case a bear or cougar gets any ideas about making a meal out of one of our goats.
@@thiaanderson2962 yea, bears and cougars seem to be the bigger concern than wolves. I just saw another report of a cougar vicinity of Athol, Spirit Lake area (where our land is)....I retired from the army a few years ago so fire arms and hiking (humping as it is sometimes called) are not an issue for me and I am happy to know you can carry personal protection (hopefully it never has to be relied upon though). I find it funny the goats would took longer to accept the dogs! I was thinking of some Oberhasli or Alpine goats (for milk) and the wethers could be the porters.
When I got my goats they were kids and I made sure they spent tons of time with my dogs. The dogs licked and mothered them constantly, now they are one big herd/pack. But; the goats don’t like or trust new dogs and will give’em the horns if they get too close.
That's what I figured, our Akita has a protective streak for small things especially if they are young. The husky is not so friendly and thinks little things are chew toys....although she was trained to be "gentle" with kittens, etc. The word they used to calm her down with young animals was "gentle" and it helps. I do know if they were with kids and lambs the Akita would do well but the husky would have to be watched as she get too rough. Thanks for sharing and confirming my thoughts on introducing them young.
The first song is "Home" by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. You can find the list of music I used by clicking the "More" link in the video description. Thanks for watching our video!
Sorry Debbie, but we don't breed goats. We only have goats for our personal use. If you're interested in buying some pack goats for yourself the Facebook group North American Packgost Association is a great place to start your search.
I wear a handgun when we are packing with our goats. We also put bells on their collars at night and tie them close to our tent so we can hear if anything disturbs them.
Good question. I carry a daypack that contains my 2 liter water bladder and my lunch and trail snacks, plus (usually) a jacket and/or rain jacket in case the weather suddenly turns cold. My wife carries the same, but also a lot more stuff simply because she's trying to give herself an extra workout on the trail. We are planning a thru-hike of the PCT in 2020 (mostly without goats) and are trying to fine-tune our equipment.
