    I'd say the move from legacy to Steam was more divisive than any other update, to the point of some people still playing legacy

    • @TheFlamingPike
      @TheFlamingPike 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You're probably right about that, there are still people asking for Legacy to be brought back one way or another every once in a while.

      Why? What's legacy and why is it so great compared to what it is now?

    • @TheFlamingPike

      @@White_Night_Demon Legacy was back when Barotrauma was free to play. It started out as a game project by Regalis ( who also made the free SCP Containment Breach ) and now has a whole team behind it and they now have a publisher ( Daedalic ).
      Legacy had different visuals and gameplay mechanics and it was overall easier to mess around whereas Barotrauma on Steam is more serious in its approach ( it's still silly though ) and has more of a simulation aspect.
      Lots of people who used to play Barotrauma to mess around and grief miss the Legacy days because it allowed them more freedom to do evil deeds ( a small example is how we can now hear an electric noise whenever someone touches wires wheras in Legacy you wouldn't hear anything, which of course faciliated griefing by rewiring stuff ).
      You can still access visual assets of Legacy through the Sub Editor but most of the stuff ( like old monsters ) has been replaced over time.

      @@TheFlamingPike oh i see...
      So the game used to be free to play but then turned into pay to play after some upgrades and people were mad that they had to pay to play their once free game? I guess thats understandable...
      I don't suppose there's a way to try out what legacy was back then, is there?

    • @TheFlamingPike

      @@White_Night_Demon Well, unfortunately you can't play Legacy legally anymore unless you acquired it a long time ago and kept it in your computer files. Right now Barotrauma is Steam exclusive. I don't think there's a way to get it anymore and even if I knew I wouldn't tell you because ( big reveal ) I am somewhat in the Barotrauma team myself as a community manager.
      I'll just copy/paste Dynamoon's answer on this:
      "Barotrauma was always intended to become a commercial release in the end. We shared the legacy game for free in the earlier stages of development to show our followers the progress we were making and to get feedback so that we could make the game as good as possible. However, it's not a viable option for us to maintain two separate, at this point very different and ultimately competing versions of the same game, so the free download was always going to be taken down in the end.
      Players who still have the older versions are free to continue playing them, but we need to focus all official support on the up-to-date, released version here on Steam. On a related note, we cannot allow sharing the legacy builds any more than we allow sharing the Steam game for free."

      @@TheFlamingPike tbh something that i think could be worked more is the crafting system where you instead of having to just press a button and have it craft over some time, you do a minigame that could actually help you make an item of a higher quality for example and dont be restricted by a 60 second time loop, also might make grinding for higher level in a skill an intresting task, as it need since for example being good at a minigame could also make you get more xp from it

      @@444traper Eh, I’m not the biggest fan of adding mini games to tasks like crafting. Mini games are usually underdeveloped time-wasters, and for repetitive systems like crafting specifically they potentially add lots of busywork without much fun. The fun of crafting should come from the decisions you make while doing it, not the process of crafting itself. Making decisions about how to budget your resources should itself be interesting. I think the devs should cut down on tedium by having fabricators and deconstructors at stations manufacture instantly. If you want to make crafting more fun, give the players exciting choices to make about what to craft and force players to make choices about how to use their scarce resources.

    What was with that jab towards Starbound?

    • @TheFlamingPike
      @TheFlamingPike 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Starbound is "finished" but it's unfinished. They actually removed content at some point. It could still be updated like Terraria but they decided to move on to other games. Starbound still has performance issues amongst other things. I thought Starbound had tremendous potential back in the day. Nowadays I think No Man's Sky is everything Starbound could've been and more, and it's in 3D.

    What's wrong with the new animations tho?

    • @TheFlamingPike
      @TheFlamingPike 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, a lot of people are saying they're a bit stiff, most especially when running. To me, it's no big deal, but it was on the community forums and Discord channels. I've been following Barotrauma for a long time and I haven't seen such backlash before. There was also a controversy with dyed hair before the update - which they ultimately decided not to add, for now at least. I think there's a bit of "it's new, I'm not used to it so I don't like it" to it.
