When you ingest nicotine it increases the amount of dopamine released in the reward center of your brain, causing pleasure and an improved mood. The more you smoke, the more nicotine required to feel good. Plus having no money cuz u spent it all on cigs, having oral/lung cancer, having erectile dysfunction, etc will definitely increase one's chances of being depressed. Not to mention people with mental illnesses and depression are more likely to smoke in the first place.. sort of creating a cycle

This makes me wonder, are intelligent, or non mentally diseased people more likely to tend towards nicotine or addiction, or are people prone to those types of mental illness more likely to tend towards such substances.

I'm an ex-smoker who turned to pssy sticks (see South Park) to transition to quitting. But Juuls have way more nicotine than the cigarettes I used to smoke, and my addiction only worsened. There is a link between depression and nicotine, but as someone with bipolar it's hard to sus out causation. I appreciate what you did with depression. Nobody likes to talk about mental health. The more people that do the easier dialog becomes. "Just be there for them" is the best advice. Condescension and lay people offering up "solutions" to your condition is annoying AF. Just listening is the best thing you can do.
